I am currently nursing my 17 month old, who shows no signs of being ready to wean. I nursed my oldest daughter-now 4.5-until she self-weaned at 18 months. (I say self weaned, she was nursing once a say, for less than 2 minutes at a time, and never asked after the last time-that's self-weaning, right?)

I plan to nurse Mariella as long as she wants to. I figure that we won't be walking down the aisle with my boob in her mouth, so, we're good.

Good to know "momto2beauties" I thought self weaning was when they comletely stop and I'm left engorged. When ever he goes on his strikes I wonder if he will come back.

I plan on making it at least a year. We'll see though. With Lilly we did 6 months exclusive and 2 months with supplementing before she weaned herself (I got pregnant when she was about 4 months old and my supply dwindled to nothing and pumping just wasn't working anymore). With William I made it almost 6 weeks. I had a horrible doctor and nurse (she hollered at me in a waiting room full of people and told me that if he didn't start gaining weight I would HAVE to give him formula). I tried to tell them that Lilly did the same thing. We supplemented with soy for 2 days and got her weight back on track. He also had acid reflux very bad with projectile vomitting. Every time I would give him a bottle of formula here and there he did so much better on it so I gave up. Come to find out it was just the switching because after he was on it for 3-4 days we would start the cycle all over again.

This time I plan to be better armed and prepared and have a lactation consultant at the hospital if necessary since both Lilly and William lost over 1 pound and took like a month to get back to their birth weights.
