Boy Names
Anyone else feel like every boy name is either bland or overused. My hubby and I cannot decide on a boy name for the life of us. I can give you a handful of girl names that we both like a ton, but boy names we just can agree. I love Jackson, Jayden, and Nolan. He loves Kayden and Christian. The middle name is James and I am strongly conteplating giving him two middle names Stephen James. Stephen is after my dad!
What do you girls think? These are my favorite combos Stephen Jayden James or Jayden Stephen James or just Jayden James I kinda like doing the Same letter for first and middle. My Daughter is Emma Eliana. |
I have a lot of Jayden's in my school, both girls and boys, so I'm a little biased, lol! I think one of Britney Spears' kiddos is named Jayden James.
I am LOVING the name Nolan! Nolan James Stephen? At any rate, it doesn't matter what I think--go with what you love. You'll be the one saying it, lol! Good luck! |
Jayden James is Britney Spears Son, that was not intentional lol. And I do feel like it's a little overused too! I dunno. I feel like any boy name I like is really popular. I love my daughters name Emma, but I know there is gonna be like 10 other Emmas in her classrooms growing up lol.
I've even thought about just going with Stephen James. You don't hear Stephen to often anymore, it's not even on the top 100, and a lot of people I have asked say they think it's very strong name. I like Nolan a lot too, but the hubby is like it's okay, but I like Christian better. lol. I've been tempted to say lets have a few names picked out and then when he gets here and we see him, we will see what he looks like. lol. |
I'm with you, I love so many girl names and am "eh" on boy names.
I dislike the whole Jayden, Braden, Kayden - just so trendy. I think 2 middle names is a little overkill, but hey YMMV. I like classic names - David, Christopher, Matthew. I'm also partial to Ethan. I think your choice of Nolan is intriguing. I think Nolan James has a lovely flow. As a Jennifer myself, it will nice for him not to have a 100 Nolans in class with him, but it's not so unusual/hard to spell/difficult for others to pronounce to be a hardship as a little kid. I'm lucky, my husband and I both have Roberts for dads, so Robert as a middle name is a done deal. |
I gave my son a common name with a twist, Alexandre (instead of Alexander). Aside from DH being French, it's a nice touch.
Stephen is nice as well, very nice for both a kid and when he is an adult (eek!) |
I like old fashioned names that aren't weird but not too common. My son's name is Nathaniel. There are a lot of Nathan's but no nathaniel's. I also like Henry, Oliver (maybe!) and Sebastian (although this might be too trendy).

It must depend on what part of the country. I have two friends with sons who are named Nathaniel. |
I just had a baby girl (we didn't find out the gender) but we had such a hard time deciding on boys names... I think its usually ALOT harder to decide a boys name than a girls. Anyway if our baby would have been a boy it was going to be Sawyer. My DS's name is Seth which is also not popular but classic I think.
|
We are stumped on boy names as well. I came up with Ruben pretty early on and hubby and friends all say it's a sandwich:/ It's not like I picked the name BLT or Patty melt. lol
Anyway, we have settled on nothing else since. If we have a boy we'll be scrambling. |
I like Sylus and Craven, very uncommon, masculine and interesting. Jeremiah, Hezekiah, and Jordan are on my list as well.

I caved and gave my daughter two middle names for a couple of reasons: 1. it was Christmas time and I was silly 2. I was afraid I might never get a chance to name another girl 3. I couldn't decide, so my Husband compromised and we hyphenated the middle name. Its a free country and I'm glad I did it ^_^ I'm loving the Stephen James combo. I named all my kids after my parents, his parents and grandparents. I'm personally named after two of my grandmothers and it always meant a lot to me so I did that for my kids too. The names have a some purpose and meaning that way, and you're not just jumping on the trend-boat of the current day-in-age. So all my kids have normalish-classic names, they're the only ones in their classes with the names, and they have some purpose behind them. |
Boys names are harder! We aren't finding out the gender and we are all set for girls names, but we are still working on boys names. We have a few contenders, but nothing solid yet.
The problem is, DH has the most common name from the decade we were born in and my name has never been in the top 1000 (which I love.) So, we'd really like a name out of the top 1000 (according to the social security site.) Try finding a boys name out of the top 1000 that isn't bizarre! It's hard, but we'll figure it out if we have a boy. Out of what you've mentioned, I like Nolan James . |
i love nolan james, but i also like greyson/grayson james! have you thought of that name??
|
all I will add to this topic I have no place being in as my boys are older
Like the name for an adult. they will be an adult a lot longer than a kid. More than likely the middle name will never be used other than for initals Look at the initials they will be used a lot for all kids of things and yu don't want them to spell something or be an abriviation for something. and if they do spell something know that someone might use it as a nickname LIKE the nick names associated with the name you pick, so Christine and Christian might all be Chris on the playground. does that matter to you... Good luck with the baby... |
I think Stephen James would be a great name! Family based names are wonderful traditions I think. I have many cousins who were named after dads, aunts, uncles, and even my grandparents had their pick in it. Granddad's name is Sam and I absolutely LOVE it. We have a Samuel that I love to call Sammie, and even though it's been used already, I once thought about naming my first (whenever I have one) born son Harrison Frank, but now I'm almost leaning towards Samuel Frank (after my granddad and daddy). Best of luck in picking a strong name for your little one!

http://i845.photobucket.com/albums/a...ivider-1-1.jpg I've always liked the name Aiden. :) It's not used all that much (well, at least where I live). http://i845.photobucket.com/albums/a.../Divider-1.jpg |

I'm promising you, anything that rhymes with Aiden/Ayden/Cayden/Braden/Jaden. 50% of my son's preschool class, Sunday School class and 2 of my nephews LOL |
Yep, I know an Aiden, 2 Bradens and 2 Jadens... very, very popular right now.

I'm sure a lot of kindergarteners won't have the vocabularly to mercilessly tease any kid. But once they all start studying SAT vocabulary words... As an adult, I would have to wonder if the parent knew the definition before giving it to an innocent kid! |
My name is a standard name, Maria, but the REAL meaning of Maria is from the rootwords like Mara and Miriam that are both Biblical and mean "Bitter or Bitterness". I use to be sad about it, but then realized if it was good enough for the mother of Jesus, its okay for me too! :)
I heard in Germany you have to name your kid from a book of Govt approved names? That makes me laugh! Sometimes though, when I'm grading kids exams and alphabetizing the papers for a large lecture in college I wonder how the kids feel about some of the random obscure names they get here in the free USA! I like Silas though, I think I'd use traditional spelling. I like some weird Biblical names like Othniel, Uriel, Josiah and Jeremiah is a standard Biblical name. So many great options! But its important to remember that your child isn't really an extension of YOU so much as he'll be his own individual person. The name won't make your child special, he'll make the name special :) If you're a geek, there's no guarantee he'll be a geek too, if you like rock music, there's no guarantee he won't like classical! He'll be an individual separate from you, and its important to give him a name he can easily turn into anything! So I prefer to give my kids standard names that they can easily be the most amazing at whatever they want to be. Whether they're rockers, nerds, geeks, musicians or whatever. When you hear the name you won't immediately think "Oh she's a preppy girl" or "Oh, he must be a comic book fan" or "He's probably a LOTR cult-worship fan". I try to choose names that aren't associated with any particular media culture. (i.e. I won't name my kids Edward, Jacob or Bella even if they are just nice names! That and I don't want them to get confused with the 50% of their class that aren't named something that rhymes with "Aiden" LOL And I'm definitely not naming my kid Feanor although I have a close relative that did! I just want my child to be considered and individual and not have presuppositions made about him or his family due to a name, I want him to be able to present himself for who is without any distractions from a name that people pay more attention to it than to him. Do you know what I mean?) But anyways, remember that the name won't make the kid something special, the kid will make the name special! |
Pick a name that has a decent abbreviation and goes well with your last name. I personally like girsl name to be girls names and boys name to be boys name. I wanted to name my son Terence but knew he would be called Terry and there are so many girl Terrys. I also like Aaron for a boy but it would get confused with Erin for a girls.
I like Stephen James or Steven James. I think Jayden is too trendy and he would end up being called Jay, do you like that ? |
Boots- you made some good points. :) I personally do not always like my very common name. And, Josiah made me think.. OOOO. Adding that to my list. I had forgotten that one, it's been soo long since I have been to church... yikes.
bargoo - you as well make a very good point, first names should go with last names!! |
We always try to consider nicknames when we're thinking of baby names. Our first one is Caleb David and this one is going to be Elias (Eli) Benjamin. I LOVE the name Eli so I'm good with the nickname on this one. :) There's not much you can do to shorten Caleb. But, when we were considering girl's names with Caleb the one I liked the most was Natalie. Completely love the name, hate the nickname Nat (reminds me of tiny, annoying bugs.) Of course, sometimes kids will come up with nicknames that have nothing to do with a person's name... not much you can do to anticipate that! People call my son "Red" because he has fire-orange red hair.
I say pick a name you like that goes with your last name and make sure you're ok with any shortened versions. After that, you can't control it! I feel bad for teenagers right now with the names Edward, Bella or Jacob, but it's not like their parents could have anticipated the Twilight series 15 years ago, you know?? |
Josiah was on the short list for names for our first son. It's a great name, and not too common. Just be prepared for him to be called Joe!
|
I like Stephen James, it has a nice flow to it. We had a heck of a time naming both of our boys, especially the second. Names are tough, you don't want to follow the trend, but you want something individual but not too out of the ordinary and something they can live with as adults. We ended up with Connor James and Desmond Cole - still haven't run across any Desmonds!
|
Gale and Emiloots I LOVE those choices, holy goodness. I had not thought about Josiah being shortened to Joe... I don't like that...
Interesting change on Natalie - Talie.. I think its cute.. |
When I was in my twenties I had three friends who had babies within 2 months and ALL of the girls were named Ashley Nicole. Now I have friends with grandbabies with the Aiden, Cayden, Braden, Shayden, Jayden and throw in some Madisons on top (I know of two girls and one boy Madison). My given name ended up in the top five girls names for four years in a row (the year I was born and three years after) and I felt invisible! So, I guess my little rant is give a name that is special to you, fits your family name and the heck with the trendy names!
Oh, yes . . one thing more. Always good to research name meanings (whether foreign or English words). One poster mentioned "Craven", which means "abject coward." |
favorite boy names
Wyatt Noah Josiah Ian |
I still like Josiah, I doubt I'll get another boy to name it. I don't mind the nickname Joe either, my grandpa's name is Joe :)
Desmond MIGHT make a small comeback as they had a Lost character named that ^_^ and he was a sexy Irish guy I think I remember? (finishing the last two seasons of Lost is on my longterm to-do list). haha! It almost doesn't matter though. My uncle told me people WILL find nicknames you don't like for whatever you name your kids. Its impossible to nickname proof any name. My baby is Daniel, I call him Danny (my dad's actual name and I like the name) and my inlaws call him his initials....DJ. |
My name is Zoë and I can say I have never had a nickname...David Bowie did name his son Zoë too. ;)
|
LOL Zoe!
I'm actually impressed! I thought that Zoe had a decent comeback maybe 5-10 years ago? I don't actually know any adult women named Zoe, your parents were smart and ahead of the trends ^_^ No one ever tried to call you "Z" as a nickname though?? i can see SOMEONE trying to do that that I know. Heck I know some Lindsey's (among the other slew of 19-22 yr old girls named Lindsey that I know) who's dad or grandpa calls them "Z" |
Yea, not many adults with my name...lots of little girls though. I was kinda embarrassed about my name as a kid in a sea of Amys and Jessicas but I love it now with so many variations of Jennifer and Kristin as friends.
Never called Z. No nicknames at all. Kinda weird, eh? |
Thanks for all the input girls. I think we are going to go with Stephen James. Even though the hubby is sure it is going to be a girl, and doesn't know why I even look at boy names lol. He is 1 of 3 boys and all his brothers and himself have all girls, no grandsons yet! lol
