any nursing moms doing south beach?

  • Hi all
Trying to lose the baby weight from baby #2. I am doing South Beach and kinda panic when I see how much fat (even though it is good fat) and calories I eat in a day! So far, I am losing weight and eating tons of veggies and feel good, but I totally freak out when I see how much I am actually consuming in fitday.com. I am usually between 1850-2000 calories a day.

anyways, just wanted to know if there are any other nursing south beachers out there- would love to compare notes, especially if you have been doing this for a while and know what we should be doing for success. thanks!!
  • I am not on South Beach, but I do choose "good" carbs over bad ones, which is an important part of the SBD. Don't worry so much about the fat grams, as long as the fat is coming from good sources.
  • I did south beach after dd (baby#1), I do a modified sbd now (baby#2) - I follow I guess about 80% of the rules but since I dont use artificial sweeteners, I have real sugar. And I am not completely strict. I eat out and dont sweat occasional "forbidden" foods, I just make better choices as much as I can and dont worry about the rest.

While nursing 1850-2000 calories is a good range to be in. I've averaged about 2200-2300 since my baby was 6 weeks old and lost 35 lbs, but I am very active.

SBD completely revitalized my metabolism. I dont eat lowfat anymore and I love it.
  • Hi Ladies

I've just rejoined 3FC. I lost weight on SB a few years ago and maintained it until a few months before conceiving last year. I am due in two weeks and intend to go back on SB Diet after the birth. I remember the amount of fat I consumed being a little concerning at first but I got the results from SB that I wasn't getting from WW or exercise alone.
  • Hi all! I'm just popping in from the South Beach threads to say that I also am nursing and following the South Beach principles. Because my nursling was nearly one year old when I decided to try the program, I did do Phase 1 but I've heard that if your baby is young you should just jump in at Phase 2 because the dietary restrictions on Phase 1 can cause your milk supply to drop. I didn't notice any difference, but again my baby is older and my supply well established, and she is only nursing three or four times a day now. I've lost eight pounds so far, ten more to my goal. I am a vegetarian and have always tried to eat whole grains and lots of vegetables and fruits. I guess my diet plan before was to follow the Food Guide Pyramid's recommendations. However, I had an insatiable sweet tooth, which was my downfall in any weight loss attempt, and the South Beach eating has really helped me keep that in check. My cravings are gone, and although I still would *like to* eat sweets, I don't obsess about it any more.

I was a little concerned about the artificial sweeteners so I just avoid them as much as I can. If a recipe can be made without the sweetener at all, I just eliminate it, and if I'm cooking for the kids I don't use artificial sweeteners either.

    Hope that helps!

    Kara
  • I also agree that Phase 1 should not be done when you are exclusively nursing-because it is too restrictive.
  • I have a question. I want to do South Beach but I am still nursing my 1 year old. I'm currently trying to ween (so I'm not worried about my milk supply decreasing) and she does get most of her nutrients from table foods, is it okay to follow the plan by the book?
  • Trampled, I think if you're weaning anyhow that it wouldn't be a problem. It sounds like the biggest issue is milk supply decreasing, if that's not a concern then I would say go for it!
