Why is it that he's not interested in nursing until I want to wean him?? Grrr...

BrittniMarie 10-28-2009 01:07 AM

I am excited to go trick-or-treating this year with Lydia.. even though shes only 9 months we are just going to see friends and pick up NO candy (shes obviuosly young enough to not eat any and therefore we don't need any in the house!!!) Shes going to be a flower hehe I have been really bad this week eating really late due to midterms at school so my weight on saturday probably isn't going to be as low as I would have liked it to have been :-( PS I did get past 10lbs total loss last Saturday so that was good!!

What costumes are you children waring for halloween?!

BrittniMarie 10-28-2009 01:08 AM

gosh excuse all the type-os I'm not on my computer and this is a really old keyboard.. it doesn't pick up all the strokes!

findingfawn 10-28-2009 12:06 PM

Welcome Kriket. I had to litterally start counting the calories of everything I put in my mouth and start eating healthier foods for me to start losing. Good luck, we are all here for you.

Gale, I think most nursings go through "dry phases". If you are ready to wean then just do it, but if you want to let him choose then you just have to take the highs and lows.

Brittni, my 10yo ds is going as a motorcross driver (motorcycles), my 4yo dd is going as Cinderella, my 3yo ds is going as a race car driver, and the baby is going to be a pumpkin.

Gale02 10-28-2009 01:51 PM

I've weaned him down to one feeding per day. I'll probably stick with that for about 2 more weeks and then wean completely. I think we're going to have to change up the bedtime routine a little to get him to drink milk at night... we'll see.

findingfawn 10-28-2009 02:25 PM

I know Cameron has slowed down on his nursing a lot, he is getting solids 2-3 times a day right now and he seems to have replace one nursing session for each solid he gets. I think we are only nursing 5 or 6 times a day now, I feed on demand and don't pay a whole lot of attention, but I think that is about where we are at.

He prefers real solid food over babyfood things.. like nibbles of bread or peaches or bananas instead of things I puree for him.

justaloozer 10-28-2009 02:47 PM

Hi ladies!

Gale our kids are only weeks apart (my dd was born in early November) and she just went through a "dry spell" only nursing the bare minimum and eating lots of solids for about a week. Now she has upped her nursing sessions back to normal and still eating solids about 2-3x a day.

To the person who asked when people were planning on weaning: I plan on letting dd self wean. While I would LOVE my body back, weaning her is a sign that she is becoming a big girl and I am not ready for that

Kyla0709 10-28-2009 03:20 PM

Sommer - My kids are under four. Isaac is 2y 3m and Gabriel is 4 months. I'm definitely taking my oldest out next year. I remember Halloween was always my favorite holiday when I was a kid, and I can't wait for him to be able to get all dressed up and have a ball on the town.

Gale02 10-28-2009 04:05 PM

Unfortunately, this isn't just a dry spell with nursing. We've gone through those, too, and they always passed. I have had to force this kid to eat for about the past 6 weeks, hoping we could limp along until he was a year. My milk is drying up rapidly because he doesn't want to nurse. Most women say that it hurts like crazy to stop nursing because you become engorged... I cut out the morning and mid-day feeding within 24 hours of each other and didn't even leak a little. I'm just not producing enough to keep nursing.

Also, I may be the only mom here that was never planning on letting him wean himself, but I wasn't going to nurse much past a year anyhow (15-18 months was the absolute limit.)

Justaloozer, I know what you mean about weaning being a sign of them growing up. I'll admit I cried when he went off those morning and mid-day feedings without even batting an eye. He wasn't upset in the least, seemed happy to not have the inconvenience of it. It struck me as a sign, albeit a small one, of his getting more independent from me. :( It's good though, really... it's just hard on mama.

Gale02 10-28-2009 04:07 PM

I meant to comment on the Halloween costume. Caleb is going as a moose this year. We're not going trick or treating, we're going to a festival at our church and I wanted him to be in costume for fun. I have a friend with a son older than mine who hand-made a moose costume that will fit Caleb perfectly this year... complete with antlers! It's too cute.

BrittniMarie 10-29-2009 01:58 AM

Lydia has cut down on her feedings too (Shes 9 months) since we started solids but she DEF still wants to nurse! I do not know yet if I'm going to let her self wean yet or not... Breastfeeding for me has been complete trial and error take it one day at a time type of deal even up until today! The first two weeks she was latching on wrong and I got completely raw and would CRY everytime she ate (every 90 min) and I swore every feeding was my last.. I finally switched positions at 2 weeks and she was fine but I just didn't enjoy it... I am going to school full time and I was really stressed and it was really time consuming so I said at 6 weeks I was done... well then 6 weeks came along and we had actually got the hang of things and she was going 2 hours in between feedings so I said ok 6 months and then I'm done.. well 6 months came and went in july and I said I would wait until the fall semester started up and then I just wouldn't be able to fit my schedule around her nursing so I was going to be done for sure... well it ended up our schedules worked out perfectly and so... shes still nursing at 9 months... Told me this 9 months ago and I would have laughed in your face!! So even though I may say I'm for sure done at a year well haha my past shows I don't stick with my word :-) She LOVES nursing and it gives me time to just put away the world for a while and focus solely on her so I guess it does have its peaks

FindingFawn how old is your little one?

findingfawn 10-29-2009 08:35 AM

Brittni, my little guy is 5 months, he will be 6m on the 12th.

Here's my dilemna. My doctor's advised me that I need to follow a low carb diet and eat 6 small meals a day in order to keep my blood sugars from crashing like they have been. He ran several tests to rule out hypoglycemia, diabetes, thyroid, etc. and they were all normal, save for a fairly low fasting blood sugar. I'm trying to find information on how many calories a nursing mom should eat, coupled with how much % wise of those calories should be from carbs if I'm eating low carb. Any suggestions?

:hug:I am the mother to a 4 yo who is still nursing 2-6 times a day. Before I could become pregnant, I lost weight and, more importantly, healed my PCOS and infertility on the Schwarzbein Principle program. She includes one case study from a nursing mom. I didn't count calories or restrict carbs but made sure that they were healthy ones. I also healed my body and prevented diabetes, with which I was on the verge of being diagnosed. Now I'm using the same lifestyle choices I developed to get pregnant to complete my health goals.

When my daughter gave up naps, I got so :dizzy: fatigued that I wasn't eating enough food and had issues with low blood sugar until my personal trainer asked me to track what I was eating. Now I track food to keep accountable for eating enough, track exercise to account for making enough time for myself and lift Kettlebells:cool:.

Not sure that's what you were looking for. I've found that meal by meal works well for me and that listening to my body works now that I've primarily been eating things that feed it for a few years.

I'm so glad I found this group! Just wanted to introduce myself.
I'm a 28-year old first time mom of a beautiful little girl born Aug 14th. I ended up having to have a c-section, and have just been approved by my doctor for low-impact exercise only... she said to wait another four weeks before starting to run again.
I gained 60 lbs during my pregnancy - eek. I had also been working on losing some weight when I first found I was pregnant, and was 15 lbs away from my goal of 140... right now, at around 190 (not sure my scale is accurate), I'm the heaviest I've been in about 6 years. 7 years ago, I topped off at 198. I got down to 148 on Jenny Craig, without exercise. 4 years ago, I regained to 180 and dropped back down to 150 in only a few months by watching my food intake and exercising hard... realized then how much I loved exercise, particularly running! I was training for a half-marathon when I found out I was pregnant, so I'm very excited to get back on that so I can register for the local races starting in April-May!
As anyone, I have a few obstacles... I am a single mom. My boyfriend left me as soon as I found out I was pregnant (part of the reason I gained so much weight was the depression that followed that). Because of that, I've moved right across the country to live with my brother... I am Canadian, and we have an AMAZING system here that allows moms to take a full year of paid maternity. Unfortunately, with only the one income, I couldn't afford to take the full year, until my brother offered to take us in so that I could. This also brings me closer to my parents and younger sister, although they're still a 10-hour drive away. Moving to French Canada has it's challenges - although I speak a bit of French, I really have no connections to allow me to meet new people, so that's going to be a challenge. I don't want to be isolated here, especially once winter comes and I'm somewhat house-bound. I did sell my vehicle before moving, and cannot afford to buy another, so there will be no way to get to a gym... and I really can't afford to buy anything too spiffy for a home-gym, either. I'm able to get out and walk lots now... I'm getting about 2 hours of walking in most days, usually carrying my baby in a sling to increase calorie burn, and often carrying groceries one-way, too. Once the snow comes, that will be a bit more of a challenge, esp when Dec-Jan brings the very, very cold weather... brrr.
Anyway, I'll have a few challenges in being creative with exercise once the really cold weather sets in and I won't be leaving the house much, in somehow meeting people in this new and somewhat isolating situation, and in keeping on track with eating when boredom may come to trigger some old bad habits...
Hope everyone has a great weekend... looking forward to getting to know you all!

:haphal:
So good that you love to exercise, I didn't. I do now, though. Great that you're walking. I planned a home birth for my only child (now 4yo) but had and emergency c-section. May I recommend using Kettlebells, high return on a low investment. Even a small one (4kg/9lbs) can work wonders for strengthening a new mom. They give a simultaneous cardio and ballistic strength workout, saving time for busy moms. I haven't found a better tool for melting fat, creating long, lean, stronger than an ox, functional muscles. I, too, an a single mom and need to get the most bang for my buck in many different ways. lol

There are several moms out there who are personal trainers and RKC certified (the gold standard for Kettlebell instructors) who have blogs, DVDs, books, etc. My trainer isn't a mom so I was so glad to find this site for some camaraderie while breastfeeding and shedding extra fat. The testimonials from runners who are injured and use Kettlebells to rehab injury and after months of not running return to their sport with even better times than before are amazing. I've also found one particular RKC mom, Lauren (On the Edge Fitness) aka Kettlebell Queen, who has videos on YouTube and she does both Kettlebell and body weight exercise clips and videos. My favorite clip of Lauren's on YouTube is her transverse abdominus body weight exercise.

This is one of the hardest things I've ever had to repair, it enrages me that medical discharge after a c-section doesn't come with directions on how to repair our core muscles. Being obese before I gave birth, after c-section, I couldn't even turn over in bed without help from several adults for 2 YEARS. Now I can press my 41 pound child safely. Thank you God for Kettlebells and the TV local news clip that lead me to them.

Well, my dilemma was taken care of for me... I suppose. :( I got the swine flu (yuck) and had to be put on medication that I couldn't nurse while taking. My risk of hospitalization was very high if I weren't on them, so we are weaning Caleb off that bedtime feeding. It went really well last night, we changed up his bedtime routine so he ate before he went into the bath and he did great. Hopefully tonight will be just as good. DH is doing all of the bedtime stuff for the next couple days with mom staying out of sight so that Caleb doesn't think about it as much. Actually DH is doing everything right now because I'm so sick, but that's a different thing.

I sure married a wonderful man that he's willing to help wean Caleb, it makes it so much easier on me.

findingfawn 11-03-2009 01:23 PM

So sorry to hear you are sick Gale, and no longer nursing as well. It's great that your hubby is helping with bedtime, I know first hand how helpful it is to have a hubby who isn't too good for helping with the kids ;) Hope you feel better soon!
