Running while expecting
I am currently 20 weeks preggo. Before I was expecting I completed the C25K running program and was super excited about it. Because of some personal issues I totally stopped running about 2 months prior to getting preggo.
I don't know what it is (second trimester feeling good I guess) but I want to run again! I just loved how good I felt about myself when I did it before. Is there anyone out there expecting and starting a running program? I also really DO NOT want to gain a bunch of weight like I did during my first daughter. But bascially, I just want to feel good! |
Talk to your Dr, I asked mine the same thing. She told me that under no circumstances should I start a new, high intensity workout routine while I was pregnant, especially running. The reasons were that when you start a new, high intensity workout routine you will end up depriving the baby of oxygen. And, the tendons that hold your uterus in place can stretch and even break away with that much bouncing action.
All in all, I'd wait. My 2 cents. :) |
I would speak to your doctor. They say for people who are runners, it's okay to run during pregnancy as long as your doctor gives consent (obviously no running last trimester). But if you haven't run in 7 months I'd probably say you might want to opt for power walking instead.

Personally, I wouldn't start running during pregnancy. It's such a high impact activity and at 20 weeks you've got a lot of hormonal changes taking place in your body that leaves you more easily injured.
I ran a half marathon last August and I continued running during my early pregnancy, but after a couple of months off I tried to pick it up again and my body said NO. The run itself was fine, but the next day my pelvis was really achy, and I'd been taking it really easy doing 1:1's. If your body wants to move, do you have access to something like an elliptical so you can get a good workout without getting the impact of running? I loved the elliptical while pregnant! |
