my milk wont dry up

I just stopped BF my youngest and Im still really hungry all the time and I can't get my milk to dry up even though she is not nursing anymore any else have the problem with the milk not drying up

Did you wean her or did she wean herself? If you weaned her, you might try nursing her for another couple of weeks. Sounds like your body just isn't ready to give it up yet.

How old is the baby? Did you stop nursing cold turkey, or did she gradually wean herself? I agree with Jennelle.... maybe it's not time to stop?

How long has it been since you stopped BFing? It doesn't dry up in a day or two. It took me about a full month to dry up COMPLETELY each time...but engorgement, leaks, etc. stopped at about a week or two after I stopped nursing my kids.

MichelleARFC 02-22-2009 05:52 PM

its been about a week I think im just really sore and its driving me nuts

Buy a fresh head of cabbage, and place cool leaves inside your bra cups. Replace them with fresh, cold leaves every hour or two. It will help to relieve the pain and swelling until the engorgement subsides.

It's an old wives tale...but it really does work.

i have also heard of sage (the herb) being helpful here.

MichelleARFC 02-23-2009 08:27 PM

Okay im going to try the cabage thats what my doctor just said as well . I hope it work's it's very painful at this point . Thanks :)

Hope things get better soon! Great job on BFing her by the way.... a year is awesome!

My friend weaned her son when he was around 13 months because she was pregnant again, and she said it took about a week for the engorgement to go away.

Two of my friends weaned at 1 year and they both still had milk 1 year later. That said, it was not painful for them because it was a very, very gradual weaning. If it's not possible to wean more gradually, you could try the suggestions from the posters above, or, if you are in a great deal of pain, there is medication that can help you "dry up" more painlessly.
