PCOS and Xenical

There was a study released by the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism last month stating that Xenical worked better for reduced testosterone and weight loss than metformin did. So far all I have read is a Reuters article, which specifically says it cannot be reproduced. However, that was the main idea, so there wasn't much else to copy. Would be great to know that might work for some people that cannot tolerate metformin.

I can't believe that post has been sitting here for almost three weeks and I'm just now noticing it...I'd like to see if Xenical would work!! I hate metformin...I'm currently still just taking 500mg a day, my doc wants me to increase it to 1000mg a day, but every time I do I start to get sick to my stomach. Taking metformin really does change the quality of some people's lives, so it's kinda stinky.

Are you taking the Met XR? I've got my prescription - but I just can't stand the thoughts of starting again. I keep saying ...tomorrow. I'm doubling my strength training at the first of the week, and I'd rather wait until I get used to that first. One of the signs of lactic acidosis (which scares the crap out of me) is sore muscles, but hard to tell that when lifting weights!

Hi Jennifer,

Sorry to take so long to reply...I'd been taking Glucophage XR for about six months now, and I've become used to the 500mg. I just recently switched to generic Metformin ER because it's now finally available in Canada and it's 30 bucks cheaper for a 3 month supply. Right now I'm actually wondering if I'm doing more harm than good by not taking 1000mg because my doc said after a while your body develops some sort of resistance or something, and you keep having to increase the dosage  So maybe I should consider taking two a day again, and see how my quality of life changes,
But I'll tell you, these past six months have been a horrific rollarcoaster of sicknesses as I got used to the damn stuff.
Good luck, let me know how it works out for you...my best advice is just to make sure you eat it with a LOT of food...like make sure you have it with your dinner. I have a sensitive stomach and if I don't have a full stomach I get sick.
Mel

Thanks - I'm so not looking forward to this. I keep saying 'tomorrow'. My latest excuse is that I just started increased my weights for strength training and I won't know if my sore muscles are a good pain, or a lactic acidosis pain. Yeah, I'll come up with a million of them. I just better go ahead and take them. He wants me on 1500mg per day. :barf:

wow, that's like what...three pills a day? *shudder*...do you find that they help at all in your weight loss? i mean the fact that you are so reluctant to take them makes me wonder how crucial this pill really is..i mean if i find out someone with PCOS lost weight without it, i'd be very interested in researching other alternatives.

by the way i read that you posted someone with PCOS needs to exercise "more" than the average person....i know you aren't a doctor and i'm not seeking medical advice, but how often do YOU find you need to exercise to get results?
