Help. Please.

Hey there. I'm sixteen and I have insulin resistance.
I'm 5'2" and I weigh roughly 230 pounds.
I'm slightly in shape, because I exercise. (I do Turbo Jam 4 - 5 times a week)

I have been on 500mg Metformin HCL x1 a day, for about 1 or 2 months.
My blood glucose levels have NOT improved.

(I think it's blood glucose levels.. My mom told me normal is between 1 and 25. Mine was 36 before Metformin, and now its 52!!!! :((( So i'm confused.)

My questions:
* Will it take long for the Metformin to work?
* Is it possible to lose weight with insulin resistance?
* Should I ask my doctor about upping my dosage of Metformin?
*Should I see an endocrinologist?

Hi Emily, I dont know the answers to your questions but I just wanted to ask what your diet is like? Sometimes the food we are putting into our bodies can do a lot of harm and sometimes eating the right foods can really help with things like insulin resistance.

Some answers:

- It depends
- YES!
- You should be discussing with your doctor your test results, what does he say?
- YES, preferably a REPRODUCTIVE endocrinologist, they are usually knowledgeable about PCOS and can help you better than a regular doc, gyno or "normal" endo

Your Metformin dosage may need to be adjusted, talk to your doctor.
Yes it is possible to lose weight with insulin resistance its just harder for women with PCO to lose weight it takes a lot of determination and will-power.
Good luck!

Thank you both for the support. I'm cutting back on my carbs, and eating varieties of foods with a lower glycemic index.. I am soo determined, nothing, not even my PCOS & insulin resistance will stop me (:
