PCOS and maintaining
I'm so close to my goal I'm asking myself how am I going to maintain it? Any tips for those who are maintaining? Are you on metformin? BCP? are you still eating low carb? ughhhh I'm getting worried about this that I wont be able to control myself with carbs.

I'm just a couple pounds higher than you (my goal is set for 150 too, but I may lower), so I can't speak on maintenance until you count being on really long plateaus as "maintenance".......... anyway, just my opinion.....
I don't think it's a question of being able to control being around carbs. If you're not eating carbs now, it doesn't mean that you're going to suddenly be able to those carbs when you hit your goal weight. In other words, the diet you're on today should be sustainable over the long-term. If you're depriving yourself from foods and telling yourself you will eat X when you hit 150, you might be setting yourself up to fail. My plan is to continue with the same diet I am eating now when I hit goal. Very little might change except that I might be able to eat a couple hundred calories more -- that's not even a cookie (unless it's a small one). I keep my treats for special situations/days/events and when I am at maintenance, I'll continue to do the same thing. I don't want to gain the weight back because being at goal suddenly means I can eat anything. I know right now that I can't anything and maintain my weight. Eating ANYTHING = weighing 200 lbs. |
As PCOSers, I don't believe we need to eat low carb. I've never ate lowcarb myself so that is what I base that on. I actually eat a high carb diet. That doesn't mean we can go wild. I've accepted that highly refined carbs can never be part of my diet again. I can deal with some refined carbs like whole wheat bread but if I find myself gaining, those things get cut out.
Last year, my BCP was switched and I've had a tough year maintaining my weight loss. I was in denial at first, thinking it was water weight. Then I thought I was either pregnant or going through an early menopause. Basically, my hormones are not in mesh with my body. I switched BCPs recently and I hope it helps because it is tough when your body fights you. You just have to listen to your body and be vigilant. |
I'm currently on the south beach diet to lose weight. And it has three phases, phase 1 which usually lasts about 2 weeks and you cut out a lot of stuff, like bread, fruit, noodles, rice and certain veggies. Then you go on to phase 2 where you slowly start to add things in so that you know what you can eat and still lose weight. Then you move into phase 3. By then your body has readjusted to processing carbs the right way and you are also aware of what you should/shouldn't eat.
I'm really glad that I've decided to follow the plan all the way because I feel like it will make it easier for me to maintain..rather than going from no carb to full on carbs. |
I am going through spurts. It's been a challeng for me too cause I was Marathon Training and need to eat the carbs, yet the insulin resistance packed on some Marathon lbs. I found my right ovary causes me more hormal inbalance so every other month I know the struggle to NOT gain is harder because I go Carb Crazy! Last Month was just rediculous, actually probalby the worst yet in 2 years!
what I keep in mind is just awareness! you know you need to, so you make extra efforts to be mindful. I tend to be proactive and allow my body to do what it needs to do as so long as I keep self control, then I'll be fine! |
