Is my BCP the right kind?
Hi all. I was diagnosed with PCOS a few months ago after not having a period for 8 months. My doctor perscribed me these pills to jump start my period and it worked~yay! Then he put me back on the pill, which he gave me "Lo Loestrin Fe". I was poking around on here and saw that Yasmin is the best. Has anyone heard of my BCP, and should I switch? I am IR and had high amounts of testosterone when diagnosed. I am a broke law student so I don't have the resources to see the whole line of doctors but I am trying to be smart about it by doing things I can. I started South Beach diet, stopped drinking pop, working out, bought PCOS books on ebay and I've lost 5 lbs in the past few weeks!
I just want to put my best foot forward, and I don't want to be taking a BCP that is hurting me and not helping me control PCOS. Thank you for your imput. |
I just saw a doctor who has done research in PCOS and he put me on Loestrin lo but he put me on the 24 day pill, he thought it was slightly better than the 21 day pill. He likes loestrin though.
We are all different though. You may find it doesn't work well for you but give it a few months. |
I am on Loestrin 24 but not for PCOS. I am just on it because I wanted a low dose estrogen pill. I like it. I almost have no period though because it's a 24 day pill.

In theory, low estrogen pills AREN'T good for PCOS. Higher amounts of estrogen (lower androgens) are better for women with high testosterone levels.
HOWEVER, take that with a grain of salt. I had extremely high testosterone, lots of really bad PCOS symptoms, and was put on Loestrin 24 FE. I loved that pill. All my neck acne disappeared, I lost weight, I felt great. Moods were wonderful! I felt like everything that was wrong had been fixed! I went off of it went my sample packs ran out because I am not in a place to be spending $60+ a month for 1 pack. My insurance only covers generics. Now I am on Tri-Sprintec. It hasn't cleared up my acne like Loestrin but it's keeping the period problems at bay, so I'll take it! But I would be back on loestrin if I could afford it. |
Thank you. This helps a lot. I've only been on it a week or so and so far so good.... but as you stated I've heard PCOS people should NOT be on BCP that are similar to Loestrin. He gave me two sample packs so I havn't filled a perscription yet---is it really that expensive??

Try there. Sorry I can't write more -- my Dad in hospital so I'm short on Internet time. hugs A. |
