Nicoyaangel 09-13-2009 09:55 PM

Have any of you ladies tried the acai pills??

Sassy_Chick 09-14-2009 03:50 AM

No I haven't, what are they?

Nicoyaangel 09-14-2009 04:46 PM

Pills that give you energy. They do help. It's an antioxidant (sp)

Jennifer 3FC 09-14-2009 05:35 PM

Hi everybody! Sorry I ran away, we've been working around the clock my way - but it looks like I'm getting my life back.

The acai pills were looking hopeful for weight loss, but I've read that they aren't what they thought they were. They are still a great antioxidant from what I heard, though. I don't have a study handy, and I'm not sure what exactly it said. There should be a diet full of everything that boosts weight loss by a trace. Drink 10 cups of green tea a day, followed by acai, 'negative calorie foods', fat blockers, carb blockers, and hot sauce.

I lost 5 pounds in August, and hopefully I'll do it in again in September.

Angel, I think that's great that you want to work with PCOS patients!

Oooh edited to ask - do you feel more energy with them?

Thighs Be Gone 09-14-2009 05:42 PM

Hey Ladies.

I wanted to ask all of you something. Is it possible for my PCOS to be undiagnosed although I have already had two children (with no difficulty) and usually have normal cycles.

What is the definitive test for PCOS? I have so many of the symptoms. My sisters do too. My bio. mother does not.

Thighs Be Gone 09-14-2009 05:44 PM

Also wanted to mention that I eat vast majority whole foods. After doing some reading this weekend, I have learned that whole foods actually are the best thing (nutrition wise) for those suffering from PCOS. Many of my symptoms seem better right now.

KellyBelly28 09-14-2009 10:29 PM

I think the weight-loss claims of Acai are not founded. There have been a couple of studies done that show that Acai doesn't boost weight loss more than anything else. I think it is more of scam.

As for the anti-oxidant claims...I do agree it is a great antioxidant...but I think most fruits/veggies are wonderful antioxidants. I'm a bit of a hippie, and would rather get my anti-oxidants from actual whole foods than taking pills (plus it is cheaper!)

Thighs...
It is possible to have PCOS if you are fertile and have regular cycles. From what my first endocrinologist explained to me, PCOS is a diagnosis of exclusion...which means they rule out a bunch of other conditions, and if there is nothing else, they may wind up diagnosing you with PCOS. I think the main tests are a blood testosterone level, and an ultrasound to look at the ovaries to determine if you have many small cysts growing. I think they don't diagnose you with PCOS if you have any other endocrine abnormalities that could give you PCOS symptoms. That being said, I was diagnosed with PCOS, but don't have all PCOS symptoms. I do not have excess hair, and my testosterone level is not high...but I do have cysts, very irregular, and have fertility issues. Hope this helps!

Jennifer- I didn't even realize Acai pills were "diet" pills. A friend of mine tried it because she heard they give you energy (no not the let's take 10 shots of espresso) but natural no more being tired 5 hours into your 8-9 hour shift. And also she read that you sleep better and your dreams are more vivid and actually all of that is true. I do still have the same amount if energy after my 9 hour shift that I did at 1pm. But I didn't think of them as diet pills. I just like the fact that I have energy to do a load or 2 of laundry when I come home after a long day. I take a pill and they have different MG. I think mine are 800mg. She tried the one with 1200mg but she said she didn't feel a difference. -- It took me FOREVER to figure out what I wanted to go to school for but I finally figured it out and I can't wait :)

KellyBelly28 09-17-2009 07:55 PM

Nico,
Do they really give you more energy?? I would love to be able to do more than come home and crash!! :) Where did you get yours?

Nicoyaangel 09-18-2009 02:17 AM

Kelly - they did to me. I got mine at a health food store (I guess that's what it's called) LOL They have tons of pills in there but also fruit and things like that. It's a small store. I wasn't so tired when I came home and if I got a good amount of sleep I wouldn't wake up doing the 5 more minutes bit lol I had energy when I woke up. Like you know when u wake up and you're wide awake like u jump up and run? Like that.

I would love to have some more pep in my step. I'll have to read more about it.

Thighs, the tricky thing about PCOS is it's a syndrome, and not a disease. There may be 30 symptoms or so, but everybody on the forum can have a different combination of them. Victoria Beckham is a good example.

For a complete workup, they need to test your cholesterol (LDL, HDL, Triglycerides) Fasting glucose, fasting insulin, and a complete hormone panel including androgens and testosterone, plus luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH). They should also do an ultrasound to check for ovarian cysts. A combination of out of range results on any or all of these along with outward symptoms will help them determine if you have it or not.

Nicoyaangel 09-20-2009 01:09 PM

Jennifer - Victoria B. Has PCOS?? Are you sure? LOL gosh! I want her symptoms haha

Jennifer 3FC 09-20-2009 01:35 PM

Yeah, isn't she a pretty picture of PCOS! I read about it a few years ago, but she's coming back in the press about it because of fertility issues.

beaka 09-20-2009 03:51 PM

Hi! Don't think I've ever posted in the PCOS monthly thread. I'm working really hard to get back under control. I moved about 2 months ago, so I'm inbetween doctors here. I did find an endocrine and diabetes clinic that I'll be going to next month. I've run out of the pill, and I actually am still having my cycle this month. Really happy about that. I take 500mg of metformin a day too and hope to stop taking it as well, but we'll see what the new doc says. I'm 25 and single so I'm not looking to have a baby now, but I want to know I can when I'm ready.

And Posh Spice?!?! Who woulda thunk it? :dizzy:
