Default Newly diagnosed with IR - questions

My PCP ordered a glucose tolerance test and it came back positive for IR. The levels were fine until the 3rd hour when I went into a severe hypoglycemic state.

She prescribed Metphormin and I'm slowly working my way up to 2000 mg per day. She also suggested cinnamon and Chromium, but I just bought those.

She suggested a low glycemic index diet and exercise but other than that she didn't provide me with many details, although she did take time to describe what IR is.

I have a lot of questions regarding my diet, ways I can determine if my blood sugar levels are right, etc. I read on these forums that some people have seen an Endocrinologist, and I'm wondering from those who have if you found it helpful.

Not sure where to go next and looking for advice.

Thank you!!
