Curious about metformin's effect
I am just curious about others experience. I have done a fair bit of reading about metformin & it's side effects, etc. Weight loss is mentioned as fairly inconclusive so I was wondering...
Those of you who have been on this for longer than me (1 week) have you found the metformin helped or hindered your weightloss efforts? Am I being too hopeful that this will help get my weight decreasing again? |
I had lost about 40 pounds before I took it. After taking it, I didn't notice that it had any effect on my weight loss. My doctor warned me it probably wouldn't, and that's not the reason I started taking it anyway. I continue to take it for the general benefits for my condition.
I also experienced a little very mild dizziness the first week, but haven't had any side effects other than that. |
I have been taking the brand Glucophage for several years. The generic Methformin causes me severe gastro-intestinal distress. The advantage of metformin over other diabetes meds is that it does not make you put on weight and thus does not hinder you from losing weight. But you still have to diet to lose weight.

Metformin at most any 'brand' gives people stomach problems. I took some immodium and things were pretty well.
i've heard the weight loss stuff from both sides. In my first week I lost 4 pounds, but now that i've been on it for a month, there has been no more weight loss. |
I'm having a similar experience...I've been taking it for about a month. My dr. wants me to work up to 3x/day--I'm stuck at 2. Since working up to 2 per day I've had a lot of gas, nausea, and stomach cramps. I'm doing WW and lost over 4 pounds the first week after I started taking them, but since then I don't think it's done much.

You might ask your doctor to prescribe the time-release formula. You only take it once per day. And, again, I didn't have any stomach problems from it, so that's not a given.

Metformin usually works best at weight loss if you are IR. It also compliments a diet like SBD because of the fact that it gets rid of the bad carbs.
I'm not on Met now, since I'm BFing, but will start to take it again after I wean my DD (at about the same time I'll start clomid). One thing that I know that I can't eat while I'm taking met is sugars. It will knock me off my feet with the gastro problems. And it will extend to sweating and general yuckiness untill the sugar is cleared from my body. I learned the hard way with a special treat of coconut cream pie. |
From the point of view of a confirmed, long-time (16 years) type II Diabetic . . . Metformin is touted as 'the only oral medication for BGL control that does not cause weight gain'. That is, however, a far cry from "causes weight loss".

My Endo prescribed Glumetza it's Metformin extended release supposedly it is easier on your system but I just started so I can't say. But the Nurse at the office has lost 20 lbs taking the Glumetza. But I think it comes all down to what we eat. My Dr told me to do South Beach.

Thanks for everybody's comments. I have been on the met for 2 weeks now & have been continuing on my herbal magic diet (which is low sugar, low carb). I have lost 3.5 lbs which is exciting since I haven't seen any real loss in a long time. Is it the met? Who knows - but for now I am content. I am not having big side effects either.
