Sodium free salt

Has anyone used it ? .....and do they sell it at grocery stores ?

PhysDom 12-14-2005 09:53 AM

I haven't used it yet, but it is sold in grocery stores. Look for it in the spice isle, next to things like 'butter buds' and non-salt seasonings (like Mrs. Dash).

If you try it, post and let everyone know what you think!

There are several types of salt substitutes out there. Some are herbal blends, others are potassium chloride. You might try both and see which you prefer. I vaguely remember trying potassium many years ago, and didn't care for it.

I bought Salt Sense, which is real salt, only it has 33% less sodium than regular table salt. The only problem is I find I dump twice as much of the Salt Sense on my food to get the same taste I would with regular salt. So I don't really use it much anymore. I saw no point in it if I'm just using twice as much and probably getting the same amount of sodium anyway.

As for salt substitutes, I haven't tried any in a long time, but the last time I had it, it was horrible. Maybe by now someone's found a way to make it taste better?

I know Sodium makes your retain water. However is there any reason why you need to cut your intake? I notice my fat free veggie dip and Ranch dressing has a ton of sodium.

Keeping it at / below RDA is usually a good idea. Some people have to restrict it for medical reasons too (high blood pressure for example).

Does anyone know how much a person is suppose to have in a day ?.......I did buy some that is half the sodium , it's not bad at all

The potassium chloride, in my opinion, is very bitter, metallic tasting. It's in many "low sodium" products. I didn't realize this and bought a low sodium vegetable juice to make soup, and had to throw it out, because it was so bitter. Now I always check.

the herbal seasonings, I think are a better option

If you don't use salt at all on your food eventually you'll get used to the taste without it and won't even need extra salt. Besides, most foods naturally have salt.

The UK puts the upper limit (UL) at 1600 mg. The US UL is 2400 mg.

I never add salt to anything yet I often exceed these amounts. What can I say, I love Marmite. :p

I use Morton's Lite salt..half the sodium of regular table salt.

I'm not a salt user in the first place but if a recipe calls for salt, this is what I use.
