Nuts

Hi everyone,

I was wondering which nuts are best. I eat almond butter (and sometimes cashew butter) instead of peanut butter, and I wanted to add some other nuts to my day as snacks.

What nuts have a high protein content but aren't so heavy on the fats?

Thanks,
Kate :)

Nuts are great, but moderation needs to be applied, definitely.

I've been eating raw almonds but during my annual checkup a couple of weeks ago, my PCP recommended walnuts instead, as they have more Omega-3s and other healthy fats. I believe that nuts are actually a source of fat, with just a little protein, so instead of trying to find the 'highest protein nut' you'd be better off seeking out the nuts that have the highest percentage of healthy fats. :)

And again, 'healthy' in this case doesn't mean 'eat all you want'. I eat only a few nuts per day, as snacks (like maybe a couple of almonds mid-morning).

I like walnuts and almonds, but I definitely have to put them (portion-controlled) into baggies as soon as I buy them. Mrs. Jim is certainly right that healthy doesn't mean eat all you want!

I love walnuts on my breakfast cereal - hot or cold. They are quite reasonably priced in large bags at Costco. I just put some in a smaller container to use and pop the rest of the bag in the freezer, inside a large ziplog bag. I also use pecans this way when Costco doesn't have walnuts. I only get there every couple months so I take whichever they have, but I like the walnuts better. :)
