sushi - calories & how to enter in FitDay ?
I luuuuuuvre sushi. :) But it's really difficult to figure out how to count it! :dizzy:
Fitday doesn't give any of the combinations I actually eat. For example, today I had: - 4 pieces of California roll (rice, seaweed, avocado, cucumber, crab stick) - 4 pieces of "just fish" sushi (rice, with a slice of fish on top - salmon (2), tuna & shrimp) I also like spicy crab and smoked salmon sushi, which Fitday also doesn't have... And how many pieces is one serving? I usually have a "lunch box", which is 8 pieces (200 gr) |
Are you using the online fitday or the software one? My software one gives several choices for sushi - rice/no fish/vegetbles, rice/fish/vegetables and no fish/no vegetables which is probably egg. They give the nutrition based on a single piece.
Does this help at all? |
You might find this link helpful...
Southern Tsunami Sushi Nutrition Info Southern Tsunami/AFC is the company that operates most of the sushi bars you see in stores such as Safeway, etc. Of course one must keep in mind that different sushi bars prepare their sushi differently (for example using more rice than others) and so 'your mileage may vary'. Still, it's a decent rule o'thumb, IMO. ;) |
Thank you both. :)
I'm sceptical about the choices on FitDay because a piece of California roll (cucumber, avocado, crab stick) for sure has more calories than a piece of all-vegetable sushi. And there is no rice&fish option. |

Some places use the "Krab" stick (ugh ugh ugh!!!), while others here use what I think of as 'crab spread' - the crab is mixed with mayo and other stuff. (actually that is the way I prefer it :) sue me!) And of course the list doesn't include my *favorite* sushi - which is a specialty of one of the best sushi restaurants in my area, Sushi Sam's - the "Sam's Special" which is a whole tempura prawn, in a hand roll with rice, wasabi and 'special sauce'. mmmm of course it's megacalories though :) |

Hmmm.... I tried to post a message this morning, but there must have been a network problem because I don't see it. I'll try to remember what I wrote. I typically avoid the empty calories by getting sashimi. I especially love yellow tail. They talk about a Californian Roll instead of a California Roll... I wonder if that's what MrsJim meant by California Roll stuffed with real crab and mayo. That seems logical, since I remember a regular Californial Roll (with surimi) as about 90 calories. |
I found this essay regarding the origin of the California roll - interesting!

Sushi Penquin: I just got the Fitday PC a couple of weeks ago (love it) and I've been entering custom foods like mad ... my own recipes or items that I eat all the time where Fitday is a little off ... could you do that, sort of analyse the kinds you at all the time and then just click 'em and enter your servings ... not sure about how easy this is to do with the online version ... the download seems so much more extensive and easy to use.
This thread made me hungry! :) |
Thank you for the suggestion. :)
I've actually thought about that and I do have lots of custom foods entered, but the problem with this sushi is that there is no precise nutritional information on the package. This is not a huge problem for me (because I know sushi is generally low in fat and calories and because I never have more than 8 pieces). But if I'm counting then I'm counting and I'd like to be as precise as possible. :) |
The biggest problem with gauging calories in sushi is the fact that many industrial preparers use sugar in some parts of the preparation.

MMMMM I LOVE sushi! here's another link that gives great nutritional info on all sorts of sushi.
