Blueberries lose their antioxidant powers with milk

I just discovered that to gain the benefits of eating raw blueberries you shouldn't have with milk (wait 2 hrs). Blah! I like blueberries in milkshakes and thought I could put them on cottage cheese.

Some study published in the journal of free radical biology and medicine

So, although I can't find the study itself, it seems that the antioxidants in blueberries have an affinity for protein. This post gives a little detail.
http://www.naturalnews.com/025516.html

"This study suggests that the best way to gain maximum benefits from blueberries and other fruits eaten for their polyphenol content is to consume them either one hour before protein is consumed, or two hours after."

The thing you don't know is whether that is a good thing or not. Perhaps the antioxidants in blueberries are helping digest the protein or performing a beneficial task. The study was only looking at the antioxidants in the blood stream. And also, the study suggests protein but is that animal protein only? Or all types. They only tested with milk for some reason.

So, I guess I will have to give up my bowl of blueberries and cream and have blueberry pie instead !

HappyHoliday 05-06-2012 04:31 PM

Haha only if the blueberry pie filling isn't cooked. Cooked blueberries don't count

That is interesting...

Did you know it is the Tannins in Red Wine and in black teas that are good for your heart? But those same Tannins are carcinogenic. But if you drink your tea with milk, the tannins bind to the protein and therefore it has a protective effect.

Basically...sometimes studies suck!

I hope this one gets disproved..>I always put blueberries into my oatmeal and I don't w ant to have to make it with water instead of milk

SADDDD

Do you remember if the article mentioned just cow's milk? I enjoy rice milk with plain Cheerios and with blueberries or raspberries so I hope not. :(
