Camping Flex Fare?

So, I have a bit of a dilemma...

I'm going camping with my boyfriend and another couple this weekend. My boyfriend, obviously, knows about WW and points and the whole deal. But my other friends don't, and as they're already very fit and active, I'd rather not bring it up. But the typical camping fare of cheeseburgers and s'mores won't work at all...

So, I need your suggestions. This is the first time I've been camping since I started WW in January. I have a couple of ideas already:

1.) No Pudge brownies made in individual cups = 2points per brownie
2.) Pre-measured baggies of trail mix for hiking = i don't know how many points yet.
3.) Lean steaks on the grill rather than hamburgers.
4.) Veggie pouches using olive oil rather than butter.

What are some other good ideas for a closet WWer headed camping in the Dunes?

How about just marshmallows over the fire instead of smores?

I'm assuming you will have a cooler. You can always cut up (ahead of time) and pack things like baby carrots, pepper, etc if you want some raw veggies to snack on. Fruit is always good too and pre-portioned :) How about baked beans? If you get the vegetarian kind they are pretty low in points. And you can always bring chicken instead of steak, too! Oh and maybe some turkey hot dogs.... mmm now I want to go camping!

You can do chicken breast pouches just like you do veggie pouches, with some evoo and spices. Or you can just grill the chicken, that's tasty too!

Marshmallows and lf graham crackers are low-points, it's really the chocolate that makes a s'more high in points.

I'd agree with mod about turkey hot dogs, then get either some high-fiber sandwich bread to wrap them in or find a reasonable bun.

Watch out for trail mixes, they're easy to overdo. You can make your own, it'd be easier to know how much you're consuming - like 1/2oz of nuts, 1/2 serving of chocolate chips, some various dried fruits...

Oatmeal would be pretty easy in the morning if you boil water. Toss in some nuts and dried fruit and talk about energy for the morning!

You could also pick up those popcorn popper things that are little pans you hold over heat... Jiffy Pop I think? You can do that over the campfire, popcorn will be far fewer points than potato chips!

I'm jealous too, I'd LOVE to go camping! Hope you have a great time!

Oh, those are all great ideas! I will definitely try to do the chicken pouches. And the popcorn is a great idea, too.

Strangely enough, I'm not much of a fan of marshmallows, unless they're combined with chocolate! :dizzy: So, I'll just steer clear altogether.

Maybe some oatmeal with almonds/almond butter for breakfast?

Thanks for the great ideas, ladies!

I would pack baggies of cereal too for breakfasts (if you like cereal dry, which I do!). Throw some apples, oranges, or bags of grapes into the cooler. Also, some granola bars (Fiber 1 bars are yummy for 2 points!) Be sure to have lots and lots of water!

Have fun! :)

Did someone mention the 99% FF Hebrew Nation Hot Dogs? I think they taste REALLY good. And would be fun to cook while camping!

You can have hamburgers, just buy the leanest possible ground chuck to make them (make up your patties ahead of time so you know their weights). When I'm going places that I know I will want a snack, I pop some 94% f/f popcorn add butter spray Splenda and cinnamon, put it in a Ziploc baggie and viola! instant crunchy snack when everyone else is eating chips or trail mix. :D

Or I pre-pop singles of the regular or kettle corn and take them with. It works wonderfully because it's already packaged and cooked. Just grab and go.

You could also take some WW 1pt yogurt and Fiber One cereal. Mix them together for an awesome, filling, 1pt snack option.

My life is all about quick, easy and low point! Plus I have been thinking about this too as I will be camping with my horses soon. ;)

Most of all.....Have fun!!!

I was going to mention those. I just tried them this past week and they were so good! And just 1 point each. So when I was still hungry, I just had an extra one with no roll, and some sauerkraut and brown mustard.

Grilled chicken or shrimp is a good option. Shish Kebabs would be a great way to combine a protein & veggie.

Your ideas are all good so far. Everyone's are. I'm checking this all out, too. Hoping I can convince dh to just take a weekend at a State Park nearby sometime this summer.

ff Hebrew Nation Hot Dogs huh? 1pt each? Hmmmmm. I'm finicky about my hot dogs. I only like Oscar Meyer Cheese weiners. :^: I wonder if I could really eat one of these. Do you think I could find them at the local Super Walmart or do you have to get them at specialty places?

suitejudyblueeyes 05-02-2008 04:53 PM

hahahah cheese weiners!! I haven't had one of those since I think I was 12!

I had totally forgotten about those. I used to try to suck the cheese from the middle. Wow. That's a trip down memory lane!

Kim - I get them at my local grocery store. With all the other hot dogs. At one point, I figured they were worth a try ^^ Oh, and I'm stupid btw... I think it's actually "Hebrew National".

ifindhope 05-02-2008 08:36 PM

i'm here i'm here. ballpark also has fat free hot dogs, 1 pt a piece, that to me taste pretty much like regular. but sometimes i think things taste regular while others don't agree. but they're worth a try in my humble opinion, very yummy. :)

That's hilarious and gross at the same time! :p

I know I've tried the Oscar Meyer ff hot dogs at one point and I didn't care for them. I guess I'm going to have to adjust this summer.

Aero, maybe we can both try them and compare notes ;)

I want to thank you all so much for your GREAT ideas for camp food! My boyfriend and I do a lot of camping, so I'll be able to use all of your ideas, now that the camping season has FINALLY arrived.

I use eTools to track my meals, and I didn't write everything down while I was camping, but I did stick to my plan, for the most part. I had one cookie and I managed to avoid all talk of s'mores! I made really awesome chicken and veggie pouches the first night and the second night I made a variety of vegetables and we grilled lean steaks. It was FANTASTIC. Everyone LOVED the NoPudge 2point brownies, too.

I was really worried because I didn't write everything down, you know, but I got back last night and was 4lbs lighter than when I left on Friday. AND, my size 16 jeans (that I bought maybe 2 months ago) were loose right out of the dryer last night! :)

WTG on the awesome loss Aero! Sounds like you had a great time.
