Has anyone else had trouble finding melba toast? I went to five stores yesterday and each one was out of it. It's been that way for several weeks in my area. I've gone to grocery and health food stores. Does anyone know of any good substitutions? Also, Does anyone know of any meal replacement bars that are comparable to the MRC ones and The Dietdirect ones? Something that can be purchased in the grocery store. Most of the ones that i've looked at have a ton of carbs. I have been drinking the EAS Carb Control shakes for metaquick but this week I tried the Atkins advantage ones. (Lost 4 pounds in first 3 days)They taste slightly better. Less protein after taste.
It's the same here in arkansas!! Don't know what is going on but my husband is a truck driver so he brings home melba toast from all over the country so we stay stocked up.. everytime our center sees our food logs with melba on there a couple times a week she says, where are you finding it?! LOL.. but you can order it online if you need to, I haven't found a replacement for it, not that is comparable anyway. If you are wanting to use it for breading on chicken or fish to lightly fry you can always toast some bread then crush it and season it and that works well too

THe Atkins Advantage bars are pretty close. I ran out of the MRC bars for about a week (they were out of stock, too), so I subbed the Atkins "Chocolate Chip Granola" bar and the "Dark Chocolate Decadence." Both were yummy, and pretty close to the MRC bars in nutrition.
And yes, OMaha has had a Melba shortage lately, too. I stock up when I can, but we go through pretty regular dry spells.
When I was with MRC I was using Wasa Bread instead of Melba toast at first because a friend of mine at that when she was on it. I asked my counselor about it and she said it was acceptable but not recommended because "some of their clients didn't lose weight eating it". I think they like to stick to one thing and one thing only. Anywho, it's drier and less flavorful than Melba toast, but it is a substitute.

As memory serves me, the melba toast is particularly good partially because you know that two of the long ones are at just 40 calories. But any low calorie bread with a 35-40 calorie count is okay too.
In the beginning, I would save my last bread serving for after supper for a very long time and fix up a piece of cinnamon toast with saflower oil, cinnamon, sprinkled with truvia. Didn't feel like "DIET" at all!
I haven't noticed a shortage at all..that's so strange. I find it @ Publix in the bread aisle closer to the PB&J and specialty bread items. Alessi also has some "grissini" bread sticks that you should be able to substitute. You can have 3 or 4 sticks for the 40 cals we're allowed. It's a good option.
I'm heading to the grocery store now...haven't tried melba toast (I use the 35 calorie white bread - it's pretty good, the honey wheat is too thin though). I'll let you all know if NC is having an outage too
Yeah, if you search "melba toast" I posted that I could not find it anywhere. I check for for it every time I go in a store and when I find it I buy all they have
Have you tried making it yourself? I read this on the internet: Use a slice of bread, roll it flat with a rolling pin and toast it in an oven (a toaster may work). You could probably cut it before you toasted it. I would think a toaster oven would make it dryer, more like the boxed ones. I see lot of possibilities with this, you could brush it lightly with water and sprinkle spices over it, or cinnamon and artificial sweetner???
