Thyroid Diet & MRC

  • I know that many of us here have thyroid issues and I recently purchased the book "The Thyroid Diet" It is amazing that one of the 3 programs in the book is basically the MRC program. I finally feel like I am starting to make the connection between my thyroid and my weight issues. Persons with thyroid issues typically can lose weight with lower carb programs and have to continue to eat that way the remainder of their lives to keep their weight and optimal health in check.

So this is really helping me to see that MRC is the best program for me. I also feel better knowing my weight issues aren't because I am lazy or just lack willpower. I am starting to decide the MRC way is not just a way for me to be thin but something I must do for my health.

    Thoughts? Experiences? Ideas? Encouragement??
  • I've had thyroid issues (Hashimoto's Thyroiditis) for almost 30 years and although I take Synthroid and my blood TSH levels are within range I have a hard time losing weight. With the MRC diet I lost the weight and for once didn't feel that hungry. It has taught me that I have found what works for me. Most other "diets" have you get a good percentage of calories from carbs. MRC is a way of eating for the rest of your life. Good luck with it.
  • We have the same thyroid condition and mine was diagnosed about 15 years ago. I also seem to have bloodwork that is in the acceptable range but have a really hard time with my weight. I am finally figuing out part of the reason I don't succeed with other things is because they are carb heavy. Thanks for your input. Good luck to you.
  • Three years ago I had to have my thyroid removed. I gained 50 pounds and found it impossible to lose weight. I have been on the program for 1 month and have lost 18 pounds. I was not able to lose weight on other programs but this one works.
  • 18 pounds in a month! That is so awesome. Do you stick to the program to a T or do you fudge a bit? Meaning do you use seasoings with salt or canned veggies or fruit occassionally??
  • This is my first post! My doc diagnosed me with hyperthyroid about 9 years ago so I had radiated iodine which led to me being hypothyroid. I gained 40 lbs in about 4 months and have never been able to get rid of it. My weight stayed pretty stable after that jump and I just kind of got used to it. I would try to lose weight, but never very aggressively - just figuring it was my thyroid that was the problem. I guess I expected to be doomed to failure, so was in denial. But this last winter, I gained another 10 lbs and it kinda freaked me out. I went in for my thyroid check and my doc asked about the weight gain which made it that much harder to ignore. So, I went home and told my husband I needed to go on a diet and wound up at MRC that same day! That was just over a month ago. It has worked very well for me. My husband is doing it too, although he needs to lose about 1/2 as much as me. We stick to the diet (I'm on the green menu) pretty close but we are not doing any supplements. We've also been a little wobbly on not drinking alcohol although we've only had wine once or twice a week. With my body already whacked out from my thyroid, I don't want to mess with it any more than need be. I've lost 16 lbs and 15 inches.

I am kinda in the same boat as you. I was diagnoised at 15 but the weight gain did not hit me until about 20. I managed to pack on 40 lbs pretty quickly too and have struggled with it all of my 20's. I go through phases of acceptance and phases of self loathing. That is when I try to lose weight but after a couple of weeks and little to no results I say, "what's the point". I got laid off from work going on 6 months ago and I have gained 15-20 lbs in that amount of time and it really freaked me out.
MRC was the only thing that ever worked consistenly for me. So, I jumped back on the bandwagon this week.
I am little disappointed with my weigh in today. I have been OP for 3 days and I have lost .5 pound. Last time I lost 1.5 pounds in the first 3 days. I guess I have to quit making those comparisons though.
To you guys that lose 15-18 pounds in a month-all I can say is WOW. I wish I was so lucky. My last time on MRC, I had lost 9.5 lbs in 28 days and I was pleased with that.

Anyhow I would love to continue to hear from you. Good luck and let's keep each other on our toes.

I have been sticking to the program very closely. Only fresh veggies and fruits, never canned. Very little salt (only sea salt) but I did use Mrs. Dash. Even going to Puerto Rico for a week on business, I was able to stay with it.
  • I think one of the hardest things is special occasions - which occur constantly! February has had Super Bowl Sunday (with all the snacks!). Valentine's Day - I love chocolate! Plus dinner out with friends who wanted to go to a pasta place. That does make it tricky - even if we are trying to be consistent. March is no different. So, my philosophy is to stay OP as much as is humanly possible and when I can't to make the smartest choices I can. I am hoping that will be the best mindset to help me keep the weight off once I lose it.
