Atkins and BCP

  • Quick question. I am considering doing a low-carb way of eating. I have been reading the Atkins New Diet Revolution (I am still very skeptical.. but I am open minded). In the book it talks about birth control pills causing a problem when you try to lose weight.

Has anyone been on the pill and done low-carb and still seen the amazing results the book claims? Or will this not work for me since I am on the pill?

Going off the pill is not an option.. and I would prefer to not change to another brand. I gained a bit of weight when I went on the pill.. but I am pretty sure not ALL of the weight I gained is from it.. I was a bit heavy before.

    Thanks!

  • One more question on topic
On a side note.. I have been reading nasty rumours that when you go on Atkins and are on the BCP.. it will make it less effective and make your periods irregular.

Does anyone have experience with this? Should I believe this?

Atkins' web site only says there has been no research to prove that BCPs are less effective. But.. if you do some search on news groups.. you get a weird variety of responses.

    Not sure what to believe
  • Hope you don't mind that I moved your question to the regular forum, Tonic. I don't think that questions has ever been asked before!

Now I'm pretty ancient but was on the BCP and on Atkins in the early 70's and don't remember it having any effect. Atkins worked really well for me then and my periods were normal. I didn't get preggers either.

Maybe some of the "younger" chicks can peep up on this one!
  • Np
No problem on moving it. I wasnt sure where to post.. so I took a guess

Its very encouraging that you did not have any problems with BCP and Atkins. My biggest fear in this time of my life is having a little one on the way. I respect and admire all the mothers out there.. just not my time to be one!

Anyone else have any bad or good experiences with BCPs and Atkins or other low carb plans?

  • Sorry can't help more!
I know that when I was on BCP I gained weight at first, then it evened out. If you've been on them for some time I think it would be fine.

The thing about low/carb that worked for me was the fact that it regulated my hormones. I have PCOS so any tiny thing to help is wonderful! Perhaps when your body starts to regulate itself and the pill is telling it to do something else, that may pose a problem. I'm not sure?????? Ask your doctor just to make sure, no little surprises!

Good luck to you, I hope we see you around here a lot!

Thanks for the advice. Unfortunately, I do not have doctor that really knows me or my history.. I have been moving around alot for the past 4 years. (undergrad & graduate school moves)

I hope to participate with the Low Carb forum more.. I am going to try the "Induction" phase.. and then go from there. I am very skeptical.. but its better to try it then not. The worst that could happen.. I gain a pound or two.. oh well. At least then I know what works for my body and what doesnt.

Seems like a good group of people on here.
