Weekly Chat 4/3 - 4/9

Hey! Happy Weekend!

Boys went with their dad today but should be home around 4ish. Then we hope to go out to eat and see a movie (either Ladykillers or Hellboy) to celebrate Cody's 14th B-day yesterday. Bry had an out of town game after school and so we didn't get home until 7:30 last night so it was too late (really we were all too tired!) to go out - I did bring home McDs for him, tho!

I hope to get all the sprinkler system timers set today. A real challenge since we have about a dozen (we live on an acre) and I don't know how they work. Learn something new everday, right?

Kids are off all next week - I'm going to work on lists of things to be done while I'm at work. If I don't pack too much on them, I just might sucessed in getting some projects done, ya thing? Or is it just wishful thinking.....

Darn - I feel selfish not going back to last week's thread to comment on everyone's lives (I'm actually just feeling time preasured and lazy). Just know that I love ya all and think about you daily.

Have a great weekend -

Kel

L144S 04-03-2004 02:20 PM

Hey kel,
You seem to be hanging in there VERY well! ...I think if your SHDH can figure out the sprinkler, so can you! an may be wishful thinking on the chores for the kids, but a girl can deam!

Getting set for Passover, i went to costco and got flowers and I am going to get the kids to help with the table.....

wish me luck!

SonoGranny 04-03-2004 04:11 PM

Hi Kel and L ... (hmmmmm, that rhymes!!! <groooan!> ) -

Kel, look on the timer panel for the sprinkler system; there might be the name of the company that made the timer and/or installed the system. They will be able to help you! (the way that I look at these kinds of stuff is: the simplest way to find out how to do something is frequently only a phone call away!!!) If you go to see Ladykillers, please report back - I love Tom Hanks and the clips on TV look really funny. (so, since at almost $10 per ticket, I hardly ever go to the movies - I want to know if it's worth the price of admission, or if I should wait for it to come to HBO!!!)

L - it sounds like you are having seder at your house again: good luck! for the first time in I don't think EVER, we are going out both nights ... I DID however call the kosher caterer and order a SMALL dinner (for 5 only) so that Rick and I can have meals for the week (we both will be working til 7 or 8 Wednesday - Friday).......I need to pick that up on Monday morning - it seemed to me to make a whole lot of sense; for once this will be a much easier Passover preparation (I usually change the whole kitchen, etc etc etc), especially since dh's shsister is getting married TOMORROW!!!!! (she wanted to have an anniversary date of 04/04/04!!!! - this is a woman who is 59 yrs old!!! :censored: but, don't get me started on her, 'cause I'm liable to :bomb: after all, religious observance isn't nearly as important as that she gets what she wants!!!! grrrrrrrrrrr ... ok ok ok, rant over! (thanks for putting up with it!!)

Well, back to finishing off some tax returns - only another week or so to go, and then I'll have my weekends back! :cb:

Hope everyone enjoys the rest of their weekend......

Ruthxxx 04-03-2004 04:35 PM

Wow, you chickies are busy today. I am still dragging my butt a lot and can't seem to get my zip going again. It may be the weather - and we are getting 5 cm of snow tomorrow....but they lie!

Lucy has blotted her copybook yet again! I left my jacket on the back of a kitchen chair and she got a $20 bill out of the pocket and made confetti out of it. It'll take a long time for her to pay that back out of her allowance. I sometimes think she needs
a dog shrink as she is too too puppylike sometimes ....but awfully cute!

I am in the middle of making a huge batch of dog food so had better get it finished and the kitchen disinfected before I start on people food. I've got raw ground chicken meat and bones, kidney and pork liver plus 4 pounds of ground raw veggies to combine and freeze in daily rations! I'd be in trouble if I had to change over my kitchen for Passover! Actually I may be in trouble anyhow if I don't get cracking soon!

Happy Saturday before 4/4/4 - silly woman!

LindaBC 04-03-2004 06:13 PM

Hi gang. I've been slaving in the garden today. It's absolutely beautiful out there and supposed to remain nice for the next few days. Still not long enough for me to get everything ship-shape but I've made a start.
I came in for my BioChemical Machine lunch and now I'm absolutely stuffed. It's TOTALLY NOT low carb though which worries me a bit. Actually, I'm eating very little meat but lots and lots of veggies (especially raw), fruit and yogurt. This woman claims that lots of whole milk and apples cured her arthritis, something I'm eager to test out. So far I've noticed increased energy and :o :o :o gas :o :o :o but I'm hopeful that is just a temporary phase.

Ruthxxx 04-04-2004 03:44 PM

Quick check in as I seem to be sick! The draggy feeling has been the 'flu so I am taking it easy today with naps and liquids and reading. Whew! I felt pretty awful making that damned dogfood yesterday afternoon and put it down to having to mix the stuff but apparently I have a mild case of the 'flu according to my pal, Dr. Bob.

LindaBC, keep an eye on your blood sugar levels! I'm sure the gas will go away once your body adjusts to all the veggies and fruit. In the meantime, I'll keep my westward- facing windows shut.

Sono, we want a full report on the wedding of the century today!

Kel, did you get the timers set? I'd gladly fly out and do them for you - especially since we are in a blizzard right now!

DTL, where are you?

First one in the Low Carb Coop tomorrow could start a thread for the week. I think I'll be sleeping in!

I hope your weekend is going well. :grouphug:

L144S, I'd dearly love a list of what you are preparing for your dinner.

L144S 04-04-2004 03:54 PM

Oh Ruth, I am sorry you aren't feeling well.et some rest! ......As for dinner tomorrow, I am preparing the house and the table, for 21 this year and the platters for the food...my Aunt and Uncle are caterers so it is all being brough in. That aside, we are having gafiltafish, chopped liver, matzo ball soup, brisket, turkey Tsimis, veggies, mashep potatos and stuffing made with motzo........
I would send you some motzo ball soup but in no way is it low carb, but it shoure would make you fwwl better....

Linda, Ruth is right, watch out for the blood sugar and enjoy your garden, they are predicting the white stuff for us!
-L

LindaBC 04-04-2004 11:49 PM

Ruth, so sorry you're under the weather. Take care of yourself.

L, your meal sounds delicious. I've never had most of those things but I'm always eager to try new foods. Yummy.

Today I went to a birthday party for my aunt who is turning 90. Poor dear just found out she has breast cancer. This on top of being deaf and nearly blind. Anyhow, there was lots of food there but I had stuffed myself for lunch and didn't eat anything but a small piece of raw carrot. Not even tempted by the birthday cake, which I bought, but it did look good.
I thought that I'd have terrible carb cravings if I cut way back on meat but so far that hasn't been the case. I haven't experienced much hunger at all and no cravings whatsoever. Here is what I ate today.

Breakfast
1 large apple chopped up into
1 cup 3.5% yogurt & cinnamon
1 tbsp chopped nuts on top.

Lunch
1 avocado diced
1 small tomato diced
1/2 oz Camembert cheese diced
oil/vinegar dressing
1/2 cup 7 grain cooked cereal with
raisins, prunes, chopped nuts and cream.

Dinner
4" beef jerky
1 steamed red potato (skin on)
1 cup steamed brocolli with lemon & butter
1 cup chopped raw veggie salad with oil/vinegar

Snack
1/2 cup mixed nuts.
1 apple with 1 cup yogurt (maybe or maybe not - depends if I get hungry)

The author of this diet claims that the mixture of whole milk (or yogurt) and apples is effective in fighting arthritis.

SonoGranny 04-05-2004 09:35 AM

Morning chickies, I guess I should really be writing a monday thread, but am too mixed up to do so.......... I don't remember if I mentioned it last week, but dh had a guy here to re-sheetrock a room and then dh did some sanding on th stair-risers; well, when I got home from dds on Friday and walked into the house, it was like walking into a fog......... even WITH the plastic that they used to try to keep some of the dust down. I was in the house all day Saturday (working on taxes!) and breathing in all this stuff - by the time I went to bed Saturday night, I couldn't breathe. I coughed and choked most of the night (even chased dh out of bed down to the family room!!! - poor baby!) woke up yesterday, felt "eh"....... went to the "Wedding of the Century" and by the time we came home, no voice, sore throat and chest - now that I woke up today, I feel REALLY sick, so I have to see the dr at 11:00 -- the timing couldn't be worse - it's HOLIDAY!

L - I love your menu for the seder, send me a plate, but please keep the tsimmes!

Ruth - as far as the Wedding of the Century, I must admit, it was nice. My shsil looked lovely (altho I would have ditched the train and veil!!!!!), her grandkids stood under the chuppah with her as flower girl and ring bearer - and most of all, Don (the groom who has been a friend of ours for 10 or 12 years) was really really happy. One of the nicest things of the day was seeing all 4 parents of the bride and groom (all of whom are in their 80s!!) walking down the aisle - that was really special. AND, except for the number (4) of drinks I had (I usually don't drink at all, or maybe at most 1!!) my eating was controlled until they came around with the trays of Italian pastry: sfigiadelle (how DO you spell this!?!?) was my downfall - I had 2!!!

Well, everyone, have a great day and week............

Ruthxxx 04-05-2004 11:21 AM

Well, I'll change the title of this thread and we can just keep on going! Passover and Easter will be kieeping us busy for a while anyhow.

Lovely menu, L144S. I've tried all of those dishes and love them - especailly the chopped liver with those crispy bits on top!

Sono, I'm glad the shsil wedding had good moments. A veil and train? Was this a first marriage? What can I say? So sorry you got the plague from the dust and crud. Who needs to be sick!

Linda, I've been thinking about your Aunt Rose today. Did you know that MY Aunt Rose is about the same age - 92 in July. Too bad our health screws up as we get older.

Would you believe we have DRIFTS of snow today?!!!! There is also a windchill of -19C/-3F so it is NOT pleasant out there. I took Hersh to treadmill and the driving was pretty bad. I also wore my garden clogs which was just plain dumb! I hope my feet thaw before bedtime.

Just got a call from the Perth hospital and have to be there for 7:15 on Wednesday morning! Sheesh! It's about an hour from here and my BIL needs a half hour to get here to pick me up! He's a real sweetie but I feel badly about that! Let's see, he'll need to leave the farm at 5:45 which means he gets up at 5:15. I am blessed with a sweetie for a BIL - although my sister "voluntold" him!

Despite the crappy weather, I am feeling a bit perkier today. Resting and drinking water most of yesterday seemed to help. I plan to work in the greenhouse tomorrow which will be relaxing and fun, especially if it's a sunny day.

Happy Monday!

L144S 04-05-2004 11:33 AM

Humm sono, plate is on its way, but I would trade for good bagels anyday. They just don't have it right. When my family comes to visit I always have them bring me some form Tal bagel on 53rd and 1st. I am glad you had a good time at the wedding, he drinks made it better? Italian pasteries at a jewish wedding...interesting!
Glad you are feeling better Ruth, and I do think it is great you have a great BIL, mine is beyond SHBIL.
I am at KFS's house, I know she has dissapeared from the site but we (she and her husband) have set up a network for computer data entry for tomorrow. We have the auction forms to enter and loads of volenteers, I HOPE :)

Ok off to find cocktail napkins for tonight and pick up the food before i get the kids...maybe lunch somewhere in there...(if i time it right it might just be at the comissary...)
Have a good day,
-L

Ms Spotdog 04-05-2004 06:58 PM

Ohhhhhhhhhh, we are extending last week's thread - that is a good idea!

Ladykillers was cute and funny. Not as good some of the previous Coen Brothers movies, tho. Dark humor so be prepared for that.

I got my timers set but not sure some of the drip stuff in back is working right. (it is very easy to tell if a sprinkler is on or not but the drip lines are more tricky - and they snake EVERYWHERE back there so it is hard to trace them down to the proper timer)

Cody got a new bike from his dad for his birthday. I took Bry to eye doc this morning and his eyes have changed AGAIN. Took Melis to ankle doc and she has some exercises to do to strengthen it.

Ruthie - Hope you feel better quick. What are you going to hospital for? Did you tell us and I forgot?

Sono - That dust stuff sounds horrible! You shouldn't have been breathing that! I told someone today about the 4/4/04 wedding.

L - That food sounded interesting. ALL new to me!

Linda - That is an interesting diet. Very different than LC. I hope it makes the difference for you and you do well on it.

Gotta run - chat at ya tomorrow!

Kel

Ruthxxx 04-05-2004 07:06 PM

Kel, I'm scheduled for a colonoscopy Wednesday morning. I've already started the prep so don't panic if you hear a sonic boom shortly! Tonight should be interesting! I'm sorry I wasted my Last Meal which was lunch on crappy frozen pizza as it won't be around much longer.

Ms Spotdog 04-05-2004 10:10 PM

Oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah - now I remember you telling us about that. Sorry that you have to go thru this. Also sorry that your Last Supper was kinda crappy. Now you've got me thinking about what I would eat as my last supper: hmmmm, I'd start with some good french onion soup, then a small shrimp cocktail, fresh sourdough french bread and real butter, caesar salad, burgundy beef with noodles, green beans w/bacon, then an ooey, gooey, hot fudge sunday - hold the cherry with extra nuts. Oops, sorry, I got carried away there.

Kel

Ruthxxx 04-05-2004 10:14 PM

Shaddup, Kel! The sonic boom part is over. I'm off to bed now BUT that Last Supper sure sounds great. Maybe I'll invest another ten bucks in the prep solutions and become a purger! JUST KIDDING! Butterscotch sundae, please! Nighty night!

dottiejon 04-06-2004 07:30 PM

Hi all,
I have been away...on the UN-Low Carb plan. all carbs, all the time...you know how it goes ;) Want to check in and say hello, I lurk, and am on my way back! love, dottie

Ruthxxx 04-06-2004 07:53 PM

Another thrilling evening ahead of me, drinking water and waiting for another boom. Never mind, I'll be feeling pretty good this time tomorrow. I wonder how much weight you lose with a complete cleanout. The only problem is it's sodium phosphate and may make for water retention. Report later tomorrow!

L144S 04-06-2004 10:42 PM

Hi dottie! Good to see you and welcome back, just saying good night as I need to hit the sheets for another day of data work for the school auction.. I think this is going to be the theam for the next few weeks!
-L

SonoGranny 04-07-2004 08:54 AM

'Morning all...... it's looking gray and chilly outside my window today, and I am suffering from a case of the "poor me"s.... I still am coughing (it feels like the lungs are leaving the chest with each one!!) and feeling terrible from all of that sheetrock and sawdust, which in turn sent me running to the doc and I have sinus infection again! Oh well, at some point, this too shall pass! (I surely do hope that dad was right - this was one of his favorite phrases!!) Today is a workday, and I WILL go to work - I refuse to crawl into a hole, even tho I might want to!

Ruth......I hope your colonoscopy (or as my dd called it: a "pooperscooper"   ) went well. Please make sure you get ALL the results from your doc! On Monday when I went to the doc about this cough, he asked how I was doing with the diverticulosis! When I told him I don't HAVE diverticulosis - he informed me that I do indeed have it! After politely telling him that the doc who did the colonoscopy said everything was fine, he then politely informed that that yes, it was all fine as to polyps, growths, cancer, etc.... BUT I definitely DO have diverticulosis! Oh well, at least this does explain the horrific pains and episodes that I've been having for some months now..... but bottomline, Ruth - GET THE FULL STORY from your doc!!!

Kel, your last supper sounds good!!! Please make the icecream dark dark chocolate and the nuts wet walnuts!!! :dizzy: Extra hot fudge please.....

Dottie! Looong time no see - it's great to see you again......

Oh well, time to hit the shower and get ready for work......... have a great day chickies........

Ms Spotdog 04-07-2004 11:37 AM

Oh, that is maddening when its like pulling teeth to get the whole story out of the doc after tests. Its like we have to ask just the right question to know what we want to know. Well at least what you got has a name and now you can educate yourself about it and maybe do some self-help stuff.

Sono - You can have wet walnuts but mine are going to be roasted almonds and my icream is french vanilla. lol Hope you start feeling better. I have a stupid end-of-the-day cough everyday now from my allergies - I hate it but at least I'm not coughing up lungs like you. Take care.

Ruthie - I will be keeping squeaky-clean-bil-of-health prayers going for you today. I, too, would be interested to know if you lost pounds with that major clean out. I have heard some unbelievable stories about how much can be packed in there when things aren't, um, flowing properly.

Hi, L - sounds like you are working too hard. I hope you get thru it quickly and can take a rest. Hang in there.

Dottie, Dottie, Dottie! So NICE to see you! Please, please don't let something small like pesky ol' carb intake keep you away - We've missed you! Please update us on what is going on in your life.

So, I don't really think the 'big project' list thingie is going to work around here this week with the kids home BUT they did vacuum the whole house yesterday AND did some laundry management! Small steps, small steps....

Gotta run - I'm trying to get in more work hours this week since I don't have to do as much roadrunner duty for the kiddos. Chat at ya later.

Kel

LindaBC 04-07-2004 03:14 PM

Hey, I vacuumed and did some rug spot cleaning. I've also been putting in 2 hours in the garden for the past few days. Oy, my aching back! It takes a while to get back into full gardening mode and the first weeks are the hardest.
I went to the pool this morning and did a full hour of deep water jogging. Mind you, I didn't put a whole lot of effort into it what with yacking with my friends the whole time but I figure at least I was moving.

I'm still trying out the BioChemical Machine plan which certainly is promoting regularity. Lots of chopped raw veggies and fruit with yogurt and very little meat or eggs. So far I've gained weight but I guess I should give it a chance. Scary though. :(

Good to see you, Dottie. Stick around, kay?

Ruth? How did it go? Hmmm, perhaps the wrong question. "Going" doesn't seem to be your problem the past few days. Anyhow, keeping all crossable parts crossed that the news is good.

Ruthxxx 04-07-2004 03:25 PM

Quick check-in. The procedure went fine - it's the prep that is the killer. This time I had good drugs so didn't watch the "video". The doc could not check out the whole track as there was some narrowing at one place. I'm now scheduled for a barium enema. Oh joy!

Aside from that, I lost 5 pounds (which will return) and have spent a lovely afternoon with a nap, a bath and a PB&J sandwich on brown bread. Gotta get the wieght back!

Ms Spotdog 04-07-2004 06:33 PM

Who was it that was the PB&J Queen? Pooky, I think?

Glad things went ok but sorry you gotta have more icky stuff done.

Hi, Linda - you are doing great getting in your yard for a 2 hour clean up everyday - Wow! I hear ya on the back, tho. Thats what keeps me from working for ages out there. It doesn't seem to hurt me at the time but the next day it KILLS me so I've learned to limit my weed-pulling.

Kel

LindaBC 04-07-2004 08:40 PM

Oh, Ruth, so it isn't over yet. Darn! I don't blame you for indulging in PB&J. In fact, I wouldn't mind joining you today.
I had to go to the opthalmologist today. My right eye has been bugging me for ages, feeling irritated and watering much of the time. My doctor referred me to this specialist (one of the rudest women doctors I've ever met) and she did a bunch of tests. Never answered a single question I put to her. No kidding, she totally ignored anything I said that wasn't a response to her questions. Anyhow, it turns out I have a blocked tear duct that might have to be surgically opened. In the meantime, she wants me to try some allergy eye drops for the next couple of weeks to see if that helps the watering. I'd forgotten that these doctors like to dilate the pupil so when I left there I was driving half blind. I had to go and buy groceries and then to the bank and my eyes looked like little slits trying to protect them from the sun. Of course, as soon as I got home, they cleared up. One of my optometrists used to hand out cheap dark plastic sunglasses that really helped but this one didn't. Talk about a packed waiting room. She must really know her stuff. My appointment was for 1:15 and I didn't see her until 2.

Ruthxxx 04-08-2004 08:43 AM

Hi there! Back to alleged "normal" today.
After a couple of blips my weight is back down to 200.5 and I intend to get it back into the 100's by the end of the month!
Thanks for the good wishes, chickies. I have decided to ignore the whole gut situation but still go ahead and get more tests done. It's better to know than to guess, right?
Now it's off for a chilly walk to get the paper and yesterday's mail.
Have a super Thursday.

Ms Spotdog 04-08-2004 08:03 PM

Quick Hi/Bye, guys. Just back from work then getting Melis' senior ball dress from alterations. Now I gotta run and get Bry from practice.

Hey - where the HECK is Janice? She's been absent for a while now.....

dottiejon 04-09-2004 07:13 AM

Friday!!!
A long week, but almost over. Who is watching the Apprentice? And Survivor? Debkay used to watch Survivor, but she is off at WLS. Last night was fun, I don't know how I get hooked into these things, but... I do :) I don't like the other reality-shows, but I NEVER miss Survivor!

Ruth, glad things went OK, I agree with you, it's better to know than to "not know." I'd have any interior looking test available, rather than leave something untreated!

Hi Sono- yup, I'm going to try to take some of this winter weight off, even if it kills me. Small goals, but I have gained about 10 lbs this year!

Linda- love hearing about the gardens- of course, you're way ahead of us, I am just getting the beds cleaned out and some spring pruning done. We moved into a new house in July, so this is my first spring here. The yard is very overgrown, and last year it was all I could do to just keep up with the lawn. we are trying not to hire a lawn service to save money, but I might just give in. I'd rather be working in the gardens this year!

Hi Kel- it's nice to see you- I know you had a hard winter, too! Glad the kids are doing well. I love coming to this thread and seeing "old timers."

Hi L, I know your schedule will settle down when the boys are back in school nest week! take care

Well, for me, here's what's going on. I haven't been "dieting" all winter, I can't get back to Atkins, but have tried eating LESS. Those who know me know exercise is unlikely! except housework, yardwork, and we've done alot of painting, etc in the house. So Ive been active, but not really exercising. My job is bringing in Weight Watchers at work program and a good friend is joining. I have joined with her for the support, and weekly weigh-ins. I am planning to do a more Protein Power plan, low carbs without overdoing the whole bacon/sour cream/side o'beef kind of eating. I can't do regular WW(need my half and half for my coffee and can't do those carbs) so I'll have to figure this out as I go.

Thanks for being here! I need someplace to "light" and I know you guys could help.

have a great day,
dottie

Ruthxxx 04-09-2004 07:58 AM

Happy log weekend, Low Carb Chickies.

You will be pleased to know that I've got my next test - barium enema - booked for Monday! That means Easter Sunday will be spent "prepping" - sheesh! I'm on liquids from noon onward. Is gin and tonic considered a clear liquid? Anyhow, I'm really glad I didn't give in to the urge to invite folks for Easter Dinner. We will have lamb Saturday night and consider that The Dinner!

Cold and sunny today. Hersh goes to treadmill this morning and I have lots of the usual housework and cooking tasks so I'd best get to it. We have a village church service this afternoon so I need to find something respectable to wear. I draw the line at panti-hose however!

Happy start to the weekend. I guess I'll start another thread tomorrow? Whadday think?

SonoGranny 04-09-2004 08:28 AM

Morning and HAPPY FRIDAY everyone!!! I am sooooo glad to see the weekend approaching, at last! This is a real quick hi/bye for me, as I have to go into work a little early today - oh well, whattheheck - afterall, it IS payday!!! ;)

Ruth, I'm glad you made that appointment. BTW, in MY book, G&T is most definitely a clear liquid, however, I'm not your doc :( I agree that it is probably time for a weekend thread.........

Dottie, I am most definitely hooked on the Apprentice, altho I don't watch any of the other reality shows. Last night I just totally wanted to strangle Omarosa! IMHO, she's gonna mess up the task for Kwame, altho I didn't think he should have gotten this far anyhow!

Well, gotta run...... have a great Easter weekend for those who celebrate....
