The bad word, "plateau"

  • Okay, so what do you do when you hit a plateau? How long do they last? I'm sure they are different for everyone but I would like to hear about your experience. How often do they happen? I have lost 20 lbs. And for the first time this week I didn't lose anything. I have been averaging 1 to 2 pounds a week. I would like some suggestions about what I should do. I have been doind low carb/low fat but I did start out on an induction. Is that what I need to go back to??? Thanks for any help given. Have a great day.

  • Hi, Amy. It goes against Atkins rules but the only way I broke my long term stall was to put yogurt into my diet. It was amazing. I did a modified yogurt fast for a few days and enjoyed it so much that I've continued eating yogurt two or three times a day instead of other snack foods. It does knock me out of measurable ketosis but I haven't had cravings.
Use plain yogurt with natural biological cultures in it and sweeten with Splenda or flavored sugar free syrups. I add a tablespoon of ground flax seed to each serving and sometimes a sprinkling of chopped nuts for crunch. On the modified yogurt fast you eat 1 cup of yogurt combined with yo-cheese for breakfast (the yo-cheese is made by draining yogurt in a sieve through a coffee filter for several hours making it nice and thick and creamy) Have the same thing for lunch and then have your usual low carb dinner. You can also have this dish for snacks through the day, however many times as it takes to keep hunger at bay.
I make my own yogurt using homogenized milk and cream but you can use low fat milks.
I think sometimes weight loss stalls are caused by a calcium shortage and the yogurt certainly takes care of that. Also, if you have a problem with any kind of internal fungus, the yogurt will nip that in the bud. It's great for shiny hair and clear skin too. The nice thing about using the different flavors of sugar free syrup (I use DaVinci brand) is that you won't be tempted to snack on other, less fattening treats.
I'm sure others will come up with more conventional methods of breaking a plateau but I just thought you might like to know what worked for me and has worked for a lot of other people as well.
  • Like Linda said, you have to do what works for you.

When I hit a stall, I shake things up a bit. Switch my foods around, add some extra exercise, or more exertion into the one I am doing now. You may even want to try adding about 400- 500 calories to your diet for just one day. If you havent been eating enough to begin with, this might work.

    Hope this all helps

  • Drink more water too. I posted a stall post in the faq about a year ago let me see if I can find it and bring it up. great info esp for people 4-6 weeks into the diet.
