protein drinks

Ok, I should know this, but in all honesty I did not pay attention to these posts before because I .....well....think they (the protein drinks) are rather......um.....yucky.

Now I need to know how to make them taste better...or even good or bearable.

I have tried the Atkins and the designer whey powders with no success. The myoplex pre made are drinkable but pretty darn expensive for 7.99 (that IS the sale price) for 4.

Is there a tasteless, odorless, disolvable one that could be mixed in to Chrystal Lite?

Thanks!

peachie............I know Jiff will skin me for this, but you know how far behind I was on getting on the protein drink wagon

The ONLY and I mean ONLY protein drink I can tolerate is the Nectar protein drinks. I will get you a couple of samples in the mail on Monday.

The Nectar is more "juice like." It comes in 3 flavors, Apple, Carribean Cooler, and Cherry Berry. I have Carribean Cooler and Cherry Berry.

I don't do well with the milk-like protein drinks.

I agree, the ones that resemble shakes make me literally gag. I give up on ever finding one I can stomach, and the same goes for the bars. Don't remind me one bit of a chocolate bar! So, Peachie my dear, when you find one that's nummy, will you please let me know??

check out vitalady.com or the vitamin shoppe online [there's also one on route 46 in little falls]. i think there's a soy based powder that's supposed to have little or no taste. not sure.

and remember, you can also add other stuff to the protein shakes to make them taste better. and if you want to try the pro-performance chocolate, let me know. and i also have some eas low carb that mixes up kind of like pudding are really aren't too bad.

there's also the egg-noggy one... made with egg beaters.

for the chocolate pro performance shake, i mix in about a tablespoon of sf/ff chocolate pudding powder and two packets of equal. you can also use a little sf syrup or instant coffee... or sf vanilla or hazelnut coffee syrup [the davinci stuff].

no matter what, none of these things are drinkable without some fixing...

For chocolate shakes, I use Designer Whey. Read all of it...it might sound gross at first... I start with a cottage cheese and yogurt base, then add the protein powder, stevia, splenda and ice cubes. Sometimes I add more cocoa. Other times I add a spoon of decaf instant coffee. It REALLY is good. The cottage cheese completely whirls up and helps it get thick.

For pre-made, I like Atkin's chocolate shakes. Expensive, but they really aren't bad. I haven't had the other flavors. Too many flashbacks of Cambridge. GAG!

Oh yeah, I also like vanilla powder with strawberries in it. I add some Atkins strawberry syrup for extra flavor.

I don't use any soy powder, I don't like the flavor. I also don't buy egg protein. Just whey.

What is it you don't like, the texture or the flavor?

Thanks guys!!!

Jennifer, I think I don't like the texture or the flavor...but I think the worst for me is the smell. I won't be able to add the cottage cheese or yogurt to it for a couple of weeks...I like the idea of pudding!

I'll go to the vitamin shop this week.

Jiff do you remember the egg cream recipe?

Oh! I did in desperation buy the no sugar added carnation instant breakfast and mixed it with protein plus skim milk. It came to about 15g of protein, not too bad but not great. It tasted fine but it caused me SERIOUS bathroom consequences. I don't think I am able to drink a large glass of milk :(

3 servings of egg beater things
6 oz skim milk
3-4 packets sweetener [and YES, it needs that much!]
a bit of vanilla
cinnamon
nutmeg [if you like it]

i'd also consider a bit of brandy extract or rum for variety

and one thing about the protein shakes: i found that pureeing them with ice was just way too thick and disgusting. could NOT get them down after surgery. just COULDN'T. so, i started POURING them over ice [they're not drinkable when they're warm], and it worked, especially when i ate them with a spoon. for the first couple of weeks, that was the only way i could get them down. and i used an iced tea spoon, not a regular spoon - smaller bowl.

the carnation instant breakfast has way too many carbs. and if you think you have bathroom problems NOW, honey, you ain't seen nothin yet!!!!

and maybe with luck the lactose intolerance will go away after surgery. mine did.

but lots of people use lactaid skim milk rather than regular, and it's made all the difference for them.

and the relatively tasteless protein is ISOPURE, i think. isopure also comes in premade bottles and looks kind of like very weird koolaid. lots of folks like it. i feel like i've swallowed a jellyfish.

read the labels.. some of the bottles have 40 grams of protein, and that's way too much for you. you'll be able to absorb only about 20-25 grams at a time, so each bottle is two servings...
