Do you have any snack ideas?

  • I just started the low carb diet yesterday. I have been reading up on the atkins diet. I don't think I will have that many problems cooking dinners. My boyfriend loves to have steak, or any meat and vegetables for dinner so, It will work out well- I hope. For snacks I would usually have baby carrots, wheat thin, hummus, or yogurt. During my first 14 days I can't have any of them. What can I snack on between meals. Somedays I don't have a lunch break and basically "eat on the go." These small snacks held me over till dinner or a late lunch. Do you guys have any ideas for a low/no carb snack. What about that dehidrated beef, but that is high in sodium. Are those protein bars any good, is there a protein bar that does not have any carbs?
    Thanks---
  • Snacks and eating on the go are really the hardest thing about doing Atkins in my opinion. You really have to plan ahead if you are going to be away from home during the day.

The Atkins bars are supposedly ok (according to him) for induction, but I and others have found they slow weight loss. What about string cheese that comes in the individual packages? You could also make the cheese crisp. A small portion of tuna salad with mayo is good for me sometimes too. I think most of the commercially prepared beef jerky's contain carbs BTW.
  • the hardest for me, too.

I keep chicken salad, tuna salad, egg salad around. Also hb eggs, salami and pepperoni slices, cheese chunks.

I like celery sticks with dips like Alouette cheese, goat cheese, or good old sour cream onion dip. And I love being able to eat Maries Blue Cheese dressings, on romaine or as a dip for celery!
  • deviled eggs... meat and cheese rollups. soy nuts [but check the carbs first

blue cheese mixed with cream cheese alone or on celery

and the key thing: get one of those insulate bags, add an ice pack [i've been using those little plastic ice cubes that you put in drinks] and pack the stuff in it..

good luck!!! let us know what you come up with
  • I agree with Tilly on the protein bars.....they are very good, but I think they stall my weight loss and fool my system into thinking Im having real sugar......then the cravings start. I havent had a bar in over a week

Usually for snacks I'll take a cup of coleslaw to work, in one of those handy dandy cooler bags that jiffypop mentioned. Also hard boiled eggs, bacon.....I'll cook up some bacon, (cut up in small pieces) put them in a baggie to munch on, chicken breasts cut up small and put in baggies.

I try not to have anything after supper, simply because thats my worst time......Ive always loved to eat, snack, munch, chew after supper!! The most, I'll have a cup of herbal tea

Check out the food logs and see what everyone that posts has during their day.

Good luck to you, and welcome!

  • Thank you. Those all are great ideas. I actually just made turkey salad (turkey and mayo) for tommrow. (I have so much left over turkey) During the first two weeks of the atkins I am not suppose to have too much cheese. So I am also going to bring in some celery and green peppers. I don't think those veggies have many carbs. I do love deviled eggs, that was a great idea. (I need to go food shopping-no eggs or mustard)
Another silly question-While doing the low carb diet is it alright to add lemon and lime to water?
I keep you posted as to what I come up with..
  • Hi Papes,

Nice to have you on board.

During the first two weeks in Atkins I'm not supose to have too much cheese......WHY????? Your allowed to have cheese just check the carb counts. I personally think the best thing to do starting out low carbing is be prepared for the sugar monster. Feed the cravings with protein and cheese is a great source of protein.

Now if your going to do atkins I dont know if you'll ever be eating Wheat Thins and Hummus at least for a while. So if I were you I would go ahead and eat cheese. Make sure it's real cheese and not processed.

My favorite snacks are hot wings, celery stuffed with cream cheese, hard bolied eggs, meat roll-ups, string cheese, walnuts, cashews and sometimes for a rare treat some natural peanut butter.

    Best of luck, ChrissyB

P.S. You might even be surprised that you'll find that you wont really be snacing once you get into ketosis because that naturally supresses your appetite. BIG BONUS!!!! LOL!!
  • Thanks, In the book that I do have about atkins, it does say to avoid cheese for the first two weeks. But, I think it would be easier to just check the carbs.
I never really crave suger or sweets. But I still think I may have a bit of adjustment to get used to. But I feel I am ready for it. I want to lose weight, but not too much. I just want to feel healthier.
Today went very well, In the morning I ate an egg. For lunch I ate tuna fish, and celery sticks. During the hour ride home I ate some slices of green pepper. I just finished a piece of steak. I was going to cook up some more veggies but decided to just finish the green pepper strips.
we'll see what tommrow brings. Just take it one day at a time.
    Thanks...
