  • Good morning, Toryah!

Protein powder comes in different flavours or plain and is used in "smoothies" or shakes. There are recipes in the Recipe section.

A brand name reference is difficult. I am in Canada and have the same problem as we don't have many of the American brands. I do know that lots of the chicks prefer the whey-based protein powder to the soy-based one. Best advice is to but the smallest amount possible and try them both.

As to flax seed oil, it is a "good" fat and is recommended on certain LC plans such as Fat Flush. However, it is expensive, must be kept in the fridge and cannot be used for cooking. If you are watching your pennies (or Euros), I'd stick with olive or canola oils.

I'm sure there will be more advice coming.
  • yep!! the whey powder is much better than the soy powder. some stores make you buy a huge container, but they also have a 'no questions asked' return policy. but they don't really want you to talk loudly when you say that it's gross and disgusting!

first, though, decide on how much protein you want/need to consume, and figure out how much protein you eat and how much and where and when you might want to supplement, and then buy accordingly. there's no point in buying single packets containing 50 grams of protein if you decide that you need only an additional 20-25 grams.

i tend to buy a large container that has a scoop in it. each scoop has 20 grams of protein, and i can add a little more or a little less to adjust.

good luck!!! oh. and one more thing. some of the smoothies can be very high carb or high fat or high calorie. there are some low-fat, low-cal, lo-carb things to add to make the drinks more palatable.
  • as for the flax seed oil better yet get flax seed and a small coffee grinder. grind your own you get the bennifit of a great nutty tast free fiber (great for keeping regular and absorbign the bad cholesterol) and all the bennifits of your omega 3 & 6.

as for P Powders i usually use carb solutions, but have no idea how t help you get some. i know eas sells a wehy and soy protein but i do not know how many carbs theya re. and they are international. but check out the local health stores.
  • I also agree that whey powder is the best. Do you have a whole foods store, or an organic market or vitamin store? That is the most common places to find them here. I think whey is the best. Egg protein bothered my stomach. Won't bother you with details!

Sue, how do you eat the ground flax seed? Does it taste better than the oil? The oil is pretty bad, but I can't taste it in strawberry smoothies. Rob doesn't mind the flavor though. He kinda likes it. Eww! I read some info at the health food store saying to take it in different forms for different ailments. I will have to look for it and post it.
