Clothing tips for wheelchair users
 

Hello, any other wheelchair users out there? I use mine far more than I used to, thanks to having a lovely partner who is very happy to take me out in the wheelchair. I noticed that I looked awful in the photos from Pride last summer, mainly over the tummy area. Wheelchairs, it turns out, do not do good things for how your tummy looks. Does anyone have clothing tips? So far I've learned:

1. Watch out for how it looks over the tummy, and look for tops that hide that problem (e.g. clever fabric draping).

2. Short skirts and low-cut tops go further in a wheelchair than they do when you're standing up. Although at my height, people being able to look down my top is nothing new! Similarly, low-slung trousers may reveal more than you'd like.

3. Being drowned in fabric isn't the best look.

4. Wearing black can make you look like you're blending into the wheelchair, apparently.

5. A lot of bloggers who write about fashion when you're a wheelchair user seem to be into wide belts, regardless of their size (and many are lovely-looking curvier ladies). Still not convinced of that one, I don't have much of a waist.

6. For taking photos, a 45 degree angle seems to work out well, I've read. Some people like to cross their legs or put both feet on one footplate. Apparently it helps to make sure your arms are separated from your body a bit, so that you don't end up looking too wide.

People have differing opinions about what sorts of skirt length, cardigan length and so forth looks best.

I don't use a wheelchair, but about the wide belt, it might look nice because you don't have much of a waist. I've heard they're useful to give the illusion of a more defined waist.

Can I just say, I always look terrible in pictures from Pride. ;)
