I hate buying pants!
Why can't they just make pants for someone who has my body shape? I don't understand it! I'm an hourglass/pear shape and hold most of my weight in my hips/thighs and chest. I'm so sick and tired of trying on pants that don't fit. I don't know of a single pair of pants that does not cling to my thighs. If I get a pair that fits through the thighs then the waist is so loose I can stuff a melon in it.
I know I know, get it tailored. But tailoring is soooo expensive! Why can't the clothing industry just suck it up already and make pants with freakin hips!! Seriously, if you're going to make your business out of making clothes then why not consider that women come in different shapes??? An apple and a pear cannot possibly fit into similar clothing styles! |
I'm an hourglass too - the best pants for me have always been the Express Editor. Express isn't known for their amazing "curvy" fit, but I swear they're the only pants that look good on me and fit my smaller waist while accommodating my larger thigh/rear.

I started buying Old Navy Jeans because year to year the sizing is pretty consistent and they have models according to body type. We have a store in Montreal called "Jeans Jeans Jeans" where someone will find something to fit your body type.
|
I know exactly what you mean! I'm not an hourglass shape so I don't have exactly the same problem, but I can never find pants that fit my thighs and then aren't super baggy around my ankles (because I'm quite short). And I have the problem of pants ALWAYS falling down at the waist. It doesn't matter if they fit, if they're too big or too small, I have to wear a belt or else they WILL fall down.
|
We need to go shopping together because I always seem to find your pants.... ;)
|
Find a brand that works and STICK TO IT. Like, for me, the two pairs of pants that always look good on me (or as good as any pants will look) are Calvin Klein and Ralph Lauren in their mid-rise, boot cut, especially.
My mother in law has big hips and a TINY waist. She finds LLBean works for her (absolutely DOES NOT for me). Jeans that have a bit of spandex in them, IMO are the best fitting pants. They don't get all baggy after wearing them and they give a little where you need them too and fit loose enough in the other areas. Plus, for weight loss, it gives you a few extra pounds wiggle room in how long you can wear them too. |
Ugh totally feel your pain. I'm an hourglass too and if I ever find anything that fits in the hips I get a huge gap at the waist :dizzy: Like berryblondeboys , I find pants with a little stretch to work the best for me, but flattering pants are hard to find so I end up living in dresses and skirts.
|
Have you tried skinny jeans? Ladies with hourglass figures can CERTAINLY rock em! They do take a little getting used to.

@berryblondeboys, I used to wear CK and now I can't find my sizes anymore. Maybe my problem is that I like to shop at a store, I'm too scared to order clothes on line because there is nothing I hate more than going to the post office to return something. I mean, if I can't find a pair of pants to fit me out of the ten I got in the dressing room with me then what are the chances that the one pair arriving in the mail will fit? That's how I view online shopping.
I have found NYDJ jeans to fit quite well, they are expensive though, but hey it's worth it if they fit right? |

I randomly pulled a pair of jeans from Target yesterday to try on - denizen curvy fit and they fit perfectly, even the petites were short enough for me. I have never, ever just pulled a pair of jeans and had them fit (with the exception of the Editor pant).

I feel your pain from the opposite end of the body type spectrum. I have a fat stomach, no butt and no waist. In order to get a pair of pants that fits me in the waist, they end up so baggy in the butt I could stick two of your melons in there, I STILL need to wear a belt to keep them up, because no waist or hips to keep them up, and then I get accused of wearing pants that are too big!
I add my support to old navy. Their sweetheart fit is the best for me, as far as fits go, and they have a variety of cuts. This has held true for a range of sizes as well, between sizes 8 and 14. I suspect if I gained more weight back I could continue to shop their larger sizes in the same cut. If anything, my stomach is consistenly big. |
I have a combination of Wannabeskinny and Tariasaande...I have a gut, but a small-ish natural waist, no butt and hips to speak of an thunder thighs of doom. I have to get higher rise pants to avoid a muffin top...but things that fit loosely at the natural waist will keep my stomach in check pretty well while being sausage casings on my thighs and giving me sad saggy butt.
Sir Mix a lot would not like me. |
I feel your pain. I have thicker thighs and a behind. For me everything is too tight in the butt/thigh area and hangs off of me everywhere else. Ugh! They need to make the upper part of the pants in different styles like they do the bottom part. Instead of flared, bootcut, straight leg, they need to have pear, apple, etc.
|
I hate hate hate hate hate shopping for pants and i probably haven't worn pants in the last 2 or 3 years. Going back to wearingpants is one of my biggest motivations to get fit right now. My legs and thighs do get in the pants but my belly doesn't. I have almost no butt and a fat stomach with a small waist. I'll probably neeed surgery after losing all the extra weight in order to have a normal belly (not a flat one, just a normal one) but if i lose 15 to 20 pounds i might be able to get pants even if they are not really flattering, which would be lovely and make me really happy.
I'm really short and i guess that makes it harder to shop for pants... it was hard even when i wheighed 53kgs! |
I seem to only be able to find flare of bootcut pants that fit well through my waist and thighs, and I cannot pull of a wider-legged pant. I need straight or slightly tailored/slim or I look like a fireplug. Grrrrr. . . .
|
I get you.
but now just add that I am at the height of a 10 year old. kid clothes just... well wont fit (I havent found any that are made for fat kids anyways, and when I am slender I still have feminine curves). so I have to go to the "grown up" stuffs- every frekkin pant is too long in the upper part. Now I either can pull them up to my armpits or have a super saggy bottom. Makes my short legs look really awesome. I *love* the dachshund look (the tshirts being too long add a lot to that too), I swear thats gonna be the next hip thing, cause I wear it. .... *sigh* PS: in a protest I decided to sew myself harem pants and wear them day in, day out. hey, they will still fit even when I lose weight (I still have a pair I can wear from my skinny days). HAH! EDITH adds: Hey, Marina Brasil you are almost my weightloss twin *waves* ^^ |

Patpat You are even shorter than me, so i get how it's hard for you! Being short makes buying clothes a hard task and when we are overweight or obese it's close to torture! Even when i was thinner shopping for pants was hard because the proportion of the pants made my body look awful. The part where the thighs should go would also cover half to a third of my legs and i always had to cut the legs. Add to that the fact thant in Brazil pants don't have diferent lenghts for taller and shorter people. Not a good fitting! And we are really twins! |
I have a terrible time with pants too. same issue your having. Small waist, big hips thighs & tush. Everything I put on is too tight in the thighs. I have about 5 pairs of pants that fit me. 1 pair of jeans & 4 dress pants for work. Majority are from Khols. Had a pair of American eagle jeans I loved so much I litterally wore holes in half my thigh and both sides of the crotch. those were more of a bell bottom style so it had room in the knees,
|
Old thread lol. Still valid though haha.
Now the style of pants is skinny skinny skinny tapered pants. I look best in bell bottoms which flare out at the bottom and help balance out my shape but those are soooooooo our of style right now. I'm not uncomfortable in skinnies and straight legged pants but there are better styles out there for me that I wish would come back in style! |
At some point I found some jeans (I want to say I got them at Fashion Bug, but it could have been Lane Bryant) that are called "right fit". I measured my waste and hips, and then they had different fits of the same jeans to pick from based on my measurements. I know two of the stores they sell them in are plus sized stores (Lane Bryants and Catherines) but they may have smaller sizes at Fashion Bug. Worth a shot. I love the jeans I got.
I'll have to figure out what to do for jeans when I get out of plus sizes. My waist to hip ratio is alright for jeans, but my butt tends to stick out, always has, even when I was young and thin. Siblings always referred to me as bubble butt. Yay childhood. |
I think every woman has problem with jeans. I found my holy grail in old navy. The sweetheart jeans fit really well on a curvy hourglass gal and come in short , average and tall. I also love bootcut... If i could find flare jeans i'd be thrilled!
|
I totally relate. I have a very small waist, a huge but and very bottom heavy legs and thighs. My upper body is slim. I end up looking very disproportionate. I rarely wear pants/jeans and end up wearing maxi dresses. People think I love maxi dresses and while I do like them, I just don't really have too many options.
I'm really surprised the fashion industry is not trying harder to accommodate various body shapes. |

At my heaviest I used to be a size 16 and thought things would be easier when I lost weight. They don't. Buying pants is generally hard and I have a similar waist problem where everything goes in the thigh and hips but not at the waist.
The only solution I've found so far: high-waisted jeans. Sounds unappealing but honestly, they are super comfy and fit at the waist. I can't recommend you a specific brand because they tend to come and go in shops but next time you're in the mood to try pants on, I recommend giving a pair a go! good luck! |
I'm hourglass as well and love the way Ann Taylor clothes fit. They have a curvy fit line that fits fantastic. I have an outlet shop near me and prices are reasonable.
|
seaurchin, I'm so surprised to hear that Ann Taylor has a curvy fit line! Their clothes are usually hideous on me! I'll definitely check it out next time I'm at the mall.

I always thought bell bottoms/wide legs, and to a lesser extent boot cut jeans were the best for me, to balance out my big butt and boobs, and relatively smaller waist... but recently the new tapered pants have kind of grown on me. It took a lot of trying-on and comparative outfits (something I hate doing... it's hot and uncomfortable and tiring), but last time I went shopping I actually changed my views quite a bit. I think it can be difficult to re-imagine yourself and drop the notions you've always had about what you look "good" in. "Good" is such a subjective and ever-changing term. I'm pretty sure everyone thought they looked great in those 80s hairstyles, for instance... Don't get me wrong, I think you need to feel good in the clothes you have, and if you just don't like how you look in something there's no point in buying it. But it can be good to be a bit more open and try out the new stuff no matter what your preconceptions are. And keep in mind that while YOU might not think your bum is fantastic, there might be a lot of people out there who DO think so.... and anyway, things like big booties look less like flaws and more like awesome features when they're put on display, instead of toned down. Just to clarify, I don't think you're not open, or that you're stuck in the past or anything like that (I could see how my comment might read that way). I just thought I'd bring this up and discuss my thoughts on the general subject because it's recently affected me. :) |
faiora: I cosign what you say 1000%. I would NEVER have deigned to wear anything but the widest of bell-bottomed jeans and pants. Nope, not even a bootcut would do, because I used to be really top heavy and apple-shaped and hipless with huge thighs and I believed a wider bell-bottom balanced me out. AND I hunted them down and wore them whether they were in style or not. Looking back, I can see how they made me look bigger and less tailored, but that was the style I was confident/comfortable with at the time, so I don't regret it. But I've realized tapered pants actually slim down my profile much more than bell-bottoms ever did PLUS when I wear longer tunic-style or less-fitted tops, I look more balanced. I think it's soooo important to be willing to try different looks irrespective of perceptions.
In answer to the question, for my awkward apple-like, narrow-hipped, flat-bummed, thunder-thighed physique, I always found luck at Lane Bryant. Their Right Fit jeans were the business. I also had luck with Jessica Simpson jeans at Fashion Bug. And in place of tailoring when I had to size pants around my thighs, I usually wore a belt. It's not ideal, but at least it reduces the gapping at the waist AND for the narrow-hipped like me, keeps my pants on my waist. |
I agree that it's important to get out of our comfort zone. It's difficult to do, that's why I depend on my one very stylish good friend to tell me how it is. Even when shopping by myself if I find something that fits I take a selfie in the fitting room and text it to her and she replies right away. Sometimes I'm shocked by what she has to say, there are many times that I think something looks good and she thinks it looks awful on me and vice versa. It's easier to buy something when someone else gives you the thumbs up.

I have short legs so I need petite pants. When I go into a store it's either they only sell petite sizes online (so I can't try it on? Great.); they don't sell petite sizes at all; or they only have petite sizes 00-6. Wonderful. Just wonderful. I have to roll up and cuff all my pants. Most of the time it's whatever but certain pants paired with sneakers, it just looks dumb.
|
Guess is my go-to brand, which I find at Winners (discount store in Canada roughly equivalent to Marshalls). They have many styles with a 34" inseam and hug my generous hips just right.

The last pants I bought were Lee comfort fits and Gloria Vanderbilt pants at Kohl's. I'll probably be out of my 16s soon though, and I have size 14 and 12 pants sitting waiting in my closet to be worn... so I'm good on pants for a while. All my skinny pants are waiting for me, hopefully I will get to wear them again soon!
