how the heck do to dress for a 'Gala'???

I have to go to a charity gala next month and have no idea what to wear. I will be networking with a lot of people from my new company and would like to make a good (stylish) impression. I don't work with any women my age, and am at a loss as to how to dress for this thing.

Any suggestions on what type of dress to wear? And, where to get one? I'd like to buy online, preferably as low budget as possible without looking trashy, and I am 6'3" and a size 10 so would need something to suit a tall frame. Help, help, help please! :)

I have this dress and I always get a TON of compliments when I wear it. It also photographs well, very flattering. Mine is a size 10 too.

Or, if you want a more "business" look (this is on sale too):

What is the venue like? Is it a sit down meal and program, or cocktail/dancing type thing?

Love the Jessica Simpson dress! Is the torso on the bodice long?

Check in the area where you live and see if there are any tall girl shops. Maybe you will need to find a dressmaker that will make something that will suit your height. I have the opposite problem everything is too long but it is easier to shorten a dress than to add length to it.

The invite should say what the dress code is (white tie, black tie, semi formal, etc).

Here is a guide to decoding: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dress_code_%28Western%29

For a charity gala your best bet if you want to look not over or under dressed + not freak out your older and conservative coworkers is to wear something black and that hit at or <3in above the knee and doesnt have too much back or bust revealed.

Something like this:

I love that dress - not too formal, not too casual and with the high waist, it would look good an almost everyone!

At 6'3" you have a challenge. Me, at 5'10" feel like a tower in 2" heels, which is what I think compliments any dress.

But ya know what? You are tall! You're not going to fool anyone into thinking you're not that tall! Celebrate it!! Glam out! Wear heels! What does it matter if you're 6'3" or 6'10"? What EVER! Go all out beautiful and celebrate what you are. You can do no wrong here. Get a fancy black dress (understated always gets my vote) and classic shoes. Then do your hair and make up as classy as you can. Be a friggin diva!!! Have SO much fun!!!
