Clothing woes

  • Is it just me or are shirts much shorter than they used to be? For instance, I have large "girls" so they take up quite a bit of material that would be hanging lower to cover the tummy, so a lot of shirts in a size down (for me a L) are just above the waist band on traditional-waist pants. It looks funny and kind of draws attention to my belly.

Also, in pants I can wear a 14 in the belly, but the butt and thighs would like something smaller, maybe a 12 or even a 10. So if I want pants that fit my whole body, the waist is so tight as to look indecent. And if I fit the waist, the rest just balloons off of me and looks ridiculous!

I hate my shape right now, it's very frustrating to find clothes to fit all the problem areas that still look good on my not-so-problem areas.

I'm thinking of taking in some of my pants in the leg, that might help, but how to add material to a too-short shirt is beyond me!
  • I have such a hard time with short shirts but my torso is super long (and my legs? Not so much). I can't shop at places like Target and Torrid (JJill is also terrible about short, blocky shirts) because their shirts are just TOO short.

I also think this bothers me more than other people. I see lots of women wearing shirts that really REALLY should be longer - they would be so much more flattering! I'm NOT someone who wants a shirt to come down to my knees or anything, I just want it to look proportionate in relation to my pants or skirt!

Tall sizes don't work because then the shoulders are too wide and I look droopy. At this point I just try on EVERYTHING.
  • I am about at the same place you are with your sizes, except its my thighs where the pants fit and big everywhere else. As someone who has been sewing my entire life I say If you are comfortable with sewing and have a sewing machine go for it, keep in mind that whatever you do to one side keep it the same on the other or you will look lopsided. IF you aren't good with sewing look for a local tailor. They can work magic to make cloths fit. As far as the shirt thing, I always look for long sizes and styles. I shop a lot at New York & Co. and have had pretty good luck with their cloths being long enough; and I ALWAYS wear an extra long cami under my shirts so I feel more comfortable and don't have to worry about things showing are better left to the imagination. Good Luck!!!
  • Hi, Kjschif, welcome to 3FC! I know you'll love this place, so stick around!

I'm thinking about the cami under, at least if the stupid shirt rides up there won't be any embarrassing stretch mark flashing!

I wear camis under my clothes (started when pregnant and never stopped) and let me tell you - the Merona ultimate cami from target is my FAVORITE, and it's often on sale for $6 each.
  • I wrote about the same woe's you have just today. I am pear shaped so a 12 pant fits great around my waist, tummy and legs. But they are tight around my hips and thighs. So I wear a size 14 pant. Yesterday, a coworker/friend, told me I looked like a clown. Ummm, ok, thanks! *sigh* But what can you do when you are stuck between sizes? Skirts are an option but sometimes I just don't wanna wear stockings and it's too cold to go stocking-less.

I have no advice - LOL. Sorry. Just venting my mutual frustrations with ya!
  • Is it mean to say I'm glad I'm not alone? I wouldn't wish this problem on anyone, but I'm glad there are people out there who understand. You'll be shrinking on down to the next size sooner than I will, Shan! (I tend to lose veeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeery slowly, and hang out in the same size for months and months!!)
  • OMG! You are so close to ONEderland, that is awesome. I didn't see that when I first posted. But believe me, soon enough, you'll be changing sizes more quickly and then you will really be "sorry". :-) And of course I say that with airquotes becuase shrinking is always a great thing! But this clothing issue is really FRUSTRATING. I begged my sister last night (we are the same height & body frame) to send me some of her old business casual clothes that she bought after she had her baby.
  • I don't get the whole short shirts, and whats worse is any shirt that has a seam that should fall under the bust, like an empire waist. If you have any shape it always falls nipple line and looks so silly. Good luck finding what you need, at least something that could be altered.

It drives me nuts! Even when I was really at a good weight I could never wear them. I actually tried to wear a ton of them when pregnant because then they actually put in enough extra material to accomodate a bust.

I used to have the problem with pants that my hips/thighs were much bigger than my waist so they always had a huge gap around my waist. Now thanks to my post-partum body I have a massive belly and comparatively small legs so I'm currently in a size 14 (if the close and normal and not in vanity sizes) but I could probably go into 12's if they had elastic waist band. I went to zara's the other day and I could get size 42 up (some say it's a US 12 but on the take it was listed as a US 10) and I could get them up just fine but I would've had to do some gymnastics to get them buttoned. Hopefully I'll be there someday!!!
