mineral makeup?

Okay so I see all the hype about Raw Minerals on the net and tv....but I also know they have mineral makeup at drugstores like walgreens or cvs....what do you girls think - do you use mineral makeup, and do you think the same quality can be found at drugstores that the RM costs (200 a month I heard)? Very curious about this.

harrismm 04-29-2009 11:02 PM

My girlfriend swears by Bare Minerals.I have tried it but dont feel like I get enough coverage.Maybe I just dont apply it correctly.I use good old fashioned liquid foundation and loose powder.

kaplods 04-30-2009 12:29 AM

I like the Cover Girl mineral makeup. I felt it was fairly comparable to the Bare Essentials (my sister is a fan and gave me a Bare Essentials makeover).

I'm very prone to skin irritation with makeup though. Even the mineral makeups, although they seem to be less irritating than liquid and cream foundations. So I normally don't use makeup except on special occasions, and then I use the Cover Girl mineral makeup and try not to let it stay on my face for more than 6 hours.

amynbebes 04-30-2009 12:36 AM

I've never used the more expensive brands but I'm a big fan of a line I found at Target, Bare Escentuals.

photoRuth 04-30-2009 01:00 AM

to me there is no comparison- the good stuff is 110% better once you learn how to apply it.

my all time fave is Laura Geller's- it comes in a compact and it very easy to apply and get great coverage (I have roseaca): http://www.laurageller.com/?gclid=CL...FQzxDAodbk4J-Q

you can buy it at Sephora.

Windchime 04-30-2009 01:12 AM

I use L'Oreal "Bare Naturale" mineral makeup, purchased at Target. I had the Bare Essentials makeover done at Sephora once and I came away feeling like the Tin Man on the Wizard of Oz...kind of glittery or something. I didn't care for that look at all! But I'm fascinated by it and I always watch when I see that they're on QVC because the models look so pretty and polished with that makeup.

Violin Jenn 04-30-2009 10:28 AM

I have used in the past Bare Minerals and had an allergic reaction to it. My skin is very sensitive and combination. My T-zone is oily and with the makeup I had breakouts under the skin all across my forehead and then my entire face started to itch! I tried another brand, but still no change, so I went back to pressed powder from Clinique, which my skin is now fine with.

I say try the less expensive brands first to make sure you don't have a reaction, it you like it then invest in a higher quality brand.

Just my $.02

bargoo 04-30-2009 10:39 AM

I have tried them but just ended up looking powdery. Guess I don't have the knack of putting it on properly. I'll stick to my cream makeup.

nelie 04-30-2009 10:48 AM

I buy my makeup from etsy now days... There are some mineral makeup sellers including some that will send you samples to help find your right color, at a nominal cost.

TamiL 04-30-2009 11:35 AM

I think it makes my wrinkles show even more. My skin is dry and creamy makeup seems much better..

Shannon in ATL 04-30-2009 11:58 AM

If you go to Everday Minerals you can order a free sample kit. They let you pick your colors, 5 different items I believe, just charge shipping. It cost me $3 to ship and I got 3 foundations, a cheek color and a concealer. I haven't loved any of the other mineral makeup I've tried, and I've tried a lot of different ones from Target, so this gave me an inexpensive way to try the more expensive stuff.. Haven't used it yet - just got it this week.

JerseyGyrl 04-30-2009 11:59 AM

I was a BE (Bare Escentuals) user for years...until a few months ago when I tried Smoky Mountain Minerals. First let me tell you, when it comes to make-up, if its out there, I've tried it. I liked BE...but I LOVE SMM!! The huge differences for me between BE & SMM are, SMM contains nothing artificial and because it contains nothing artificial, you do not have to "buff" it on like you do BE. The ingredients are all natural and it does not irritate my skin at all. SMM also contains natural SPF of 15 and higher. Because it contains only natural ingredients, this makeup has no expiration date (BE does). The colors are perfect for my skin, in fact...most people don't even know I'm wearing makeup. I guess you can tell I LOVE this stuff!!
Its available online at http://www.smokymountainminerals.com
Its reasonably priced, lasts for months and best off all....they have FREE shipping!
I can't say enough about this makeup! I tell everyone to try it and everyone that has, tells me they love it as much as I do:)

*For those who say they can't use mineral makeup due to having dry skin...I apply my moisturizer after my shower, in the meantime, I do my hair and let the moisturizer "sink in"....the minerals go on like silk....and best of all, NO buffing!!!

JerseyGyrl, I went to the website and was amazed at the selection of foundations! Which one in particular is it that you use?

I've tried mineral make up, Bare Escentuals, but I was underwhelmed. Maybe I'm not applying it properly. But I am interested in trying JerseyGyrl's stuff.

I use the Light foundation...I had originally tried the Fair, which turned out to be too light for me...but, the good thing is, I bought a bag of their darkener color corrector, added a few pinches to the Fair foundation, shook it up...and its the same shade as the Light foundation...so, no waste:)
I also have the Bronzer, Soft Pink Blush, Joy Blush, Multi-tasking Concealer, Illusion Mineral Veil, Be Flawless Veil (Matte), Glow Complexion Booster, and I have their flawless face brush, that I LOVE!
My first order was the 8 piece mineral make-up kit ($22.95)...I think this is a good place to start as it gives you a variety of products to try.

wantingtolose 04-30-2009 02:07 PM

I really like Everyday Minerals. They have good specials, and are always coming out with new stuff to try. They have a huge variety of shades and the free sample kits are great esp. when trying to figure out what shade you are . there is no limit on how many sample kits you get, only stipulation is one per order.Their brushes are some of the best quality i have purchased, and are fairly cheap when compared to BE, or Mac, etc.
The owner of the company is really great, and every time i've had a problem they have fixed it quickly.

Fressca 04-30-2009 02:17 PM

JerseyGyrl - thanks!

Bumbleberry 05-15-2009 02:39 AM

I have Body Shop's new mineral makeup.

I find that because I have dry skin, I must exfoliate like crazy and use a lot of moisturizer in order to avoid "flaky" skin.

I much prefer Clinique's liquid foundation (or any liquid foundation, really, from Make Up For Ever to Estee Lauder etc).

I may use it again later in the summer when my skin tends to be more hydrated.

Most mineral makeup needs to be "buffed" into the skin...I believe this is what causes the skin to appear "flaky".
I exfoliate daily, apply my moisturizer, allow it to be absorbed into my skin (at least 30 mins) and then apply the minerals.
As I've said, I use SMM (Smoky Mountain Minerals) and there is no "buffing".

Bumbleberry 05-15-2009 03:54 PM

Is the buffing the round movements I make with the brush? Because yes, I have to do that with this brand.

How is SMM applied?

rosiem 05-15-2009 03:58 PM

I use the Loreal Bare Naturale and I like it much better than liquid- hardly takes any time to apply and gives a nice even skin tone. I have slightly oily skin, pretty pale (I use the lightest shade). I've never tried the more expensive kinds though- just liked this one and stuck to it!

I hear ya there. With the powders I always get a dry patch between my eyes, and the skin under my eyes looks horrible. When I applied enough to cover the problems it looked like I had a ton of makeup on. I prefer a more natural look.

Since SMM does not contain bismuth....there is no need for "buffing" it into the skin. There is no "shiny" look with SMM....just a natural finish....you don't even look like you're wearing make-up!
For how SMM is applied, you may want to have a look here:

kittenmeow 05-15-2009 06:02 PM

I would go with mac... it is about $27 but it is worth it also make sure that you have a deep conditioner for your face and a sheer liquid underneath your eyes down nose and at the crescent of your chin... if that brings out the natural tones in your face why wear make up.. I would swear on 23 also. =]

Moisturizer should be applied and allowed to thoroughly penetrate skin before applying minerals. For problem skin under the eyes, I use a color corrector - http://www.smokymountainminerals.com...34/3338315.htm
or multi-tasking bisque concealer -http://www.smokymountainminerals.com/catalog/item/3682615/3689262.htm
Mineral make-up applied correctly gives you a very natural look:)

Bumbleberry 05-15-2009 08:36 PM

Holy bejuicies, I just noticed how much weight you've lost! WOW!

LittleBitIzzy 05-17-2009 05:38 PM

I used to use Physician's Formula (Walgreens usually has a buy one get one free/half off) but now I use Bare Minerals. I use a tinted moisterizer before using the powder and it helps.

kiramira 05-17-2009 06:39 PM

I just went out and bought the foundation and the mineral veil from Bare Essentials. I didn't buy the kit because I have tons of makeup brushes at home and really good skin moisturizers including a great silicone-based one that acts like a barrier cream, and because I didn't want the DVD.

My ONLY question is this -- what brush do I use to apply the foundation? I understand and watched a few youtube videos on the buffing in idea, but is this a stiff brush? or like a large powder brush?

Thanks

Kira

You are correct, Bare Escentuals needs to be "buffed" into your skin due to the bismuth it contains. They recommend their flawless face brush or their kabuki brush.

My skin is UBER sensitive. I've tried Victoria Jackson's, Clinique, L'Oreal, you name it (expensive, I've tried it), and it always causes redness and irritation. I started Bare Essentials about 2 months ago and I'm totally in love. You'll have to pry it out of my cold, dead hands. LOL

walking2lose 05-18-2009 06:55 AM

I'm going to check out the smoky mt site!

Does it not make your face look shiney? I went to Sephora and had them put some Bare Essentials on me, but when I got home I realized that I looked very shiney, almost "glittery" or something. They also put on the mineral veil; was that it? I really wanted to love it because I'm fascinated by it but I couldn't get past the kind of glittery look.

The "shiney" look from BE is due to it containing Bismuth, which is also the reason you must "buff" it into your skin. I've also heard complaints BE causing itching.
SMM does not contain bismuth, does not require "buffing" and has never made me itch. They are talc-free, dye-free, preservative-free, chemical-free, fragrance-free:)

Sunny Gee 05-18-2009 05:24 PM

It does not look shiny. At all. Not even hours later. Perhaps you got a summer "shimmer" type? And I use the mineral veil. THAT is what keeps it looking the same all day long. It's the only thing in which the blush doesn't disappear by lunchtime. Nose never gets shiny. It looks, eight hours later, EXACTLY like it looked when I applied it. Nothing itches, and like I said, my face is VERY VERY sensitive.

What do I use?

1. after washing my face, I apply their mosturizer. Before I even dry my hair.
2. when I'm ready to start my make-up, I apply the Prime Time. That stuff feels AMAZING when it goes on.
3. Then I use the "light" and the smaller brush to do any redness cover-up. Which now, is almost nothing unless some tomatoes slip into my diet by accident.
4. Then I use the largest brush to apply the "fairly light" as the main foundation. Remember for all of it you are supposed to put a tiny amount in the lid, gently swirl the brush in it, THEN TAP IT OFF back into the lid. A tiny bit goes a long, long way.
5. Then I use the 2nd largest brush to apply the blush.
6. Follow up, using the largest brush, to apply the mineral veil.
7. After doing rest of hair and dressing, sometimes I add a tad more blush (I'm so pale.) :)

p.s. the "buffing"....? It simply means that you apply it with the brush, rather than blotting on your face. Not like "buffing" a car or anything. :)

The "buffing" procedure is basically working a small amount of the minerals into the brush until they disappear into the bristles...tapping off any excess...and then working the minerals into your skin working the brush in a circular motion.

Sunny Gee 05-18-2009 06:24 PM

Not much work, though. It just glides right on. I'm not circling my face over and over. ;)

Well, it's good to know I won't have to purchase any special auto-body equipment! :) I don't think I got a summer shimmer type, but I can't say for sure as the Sephora girl put it on me. It wasn't really glittery, so much....there was just a sheen that I can't quite describe. It could have been the wrong shade, I suppose.

I'm using mineral makeup from Target, but I can't say I'm totally happy with it.

Shannon,
Thank you so much for the information. I sent away for my samples and they came yesterday. The one I wore today was perfect for my "summer" skin. I have never worn mineral make-up before, but I found it easy to apply and it looked so natural my husband was amazed. He said my skin tone was so smooth and he could not tell I was wearing make-up to even the tone out. Now I just have to figure out what my rest of the year pale shade is.:)

digitalrequiem 05-18-2009 10:57 PM

Has anyone with slightly oily/combination skin tried to use mineral foundations? I've been interested in them for awhile, but I've read a bunch of reviews that caution against people with oily skin using the mineral foundations. Right now I use Clinique Work Out Makeup or Almost Makeup foundations and both of those last all day on me with little to no oiliness. I worry that a mineral foundation might look good when it is first applied and then absorb the oil off of my skin and start to look shiny or streaky. I should also mention that I live in Florida and it is very, very humid down here for most of the year. :-(

Yes, my skin is oily/combination and I've been using mineral foundation for years now.
I've learned the "secret" is to apply a thin layer of veil (I use Be Flawless Matte Veil by Smoky Mtn Minerals) first, before applying the actual foundation & then applying a thin layer over the foundation....works perfectly:)
