Jeans- size 18/20?
Hi there! I have had a lot of trouble finding jeans lately. I work at Old Navy and have worn their jeans for years, but the quality isn't great and the sizing isn't consistent. I have a smaller waist with large hips (and I'm only 18), so higher rise jeans are too loose at the top and aren't fashionable for someone my age. I know Gap carries larger sizes online- has anyone tried them? Also, I looked through the links of plus sized clothing on the forum and didn't have any luck. Sometimes I'm a size 18 but it depends on who makes them, you know? I've tried on 18's that are too tight. Can anyone point me in the direction of a good pair?

I'll try looking at their jeans in the store. The rise looks pretty high online but it's kinda hard to tell.

lane bryant has different jeans for different body shapes (apple pear etc) and some of them are pretty cute. I would recommend going in to the store so they can size you, because they use a different sizing system.
Great fit, though. |
I like Maurices and Avenue jeans as well as Lane Bryant.

I don't know if this will help you, but there's a website: http://www.myshape.com/
You input all of your measurements and clothing preferences (high rise, low rise...) and then they will recommend items of clothing that would suit you and fit you. I have never bought anything from them, but I did do the measurement and I got some recommendations that seemed very workable. |
myshape is great in theory but not so great in practice, at least for me. They have *never* had jeans to recommend to me, and typically only have t-shirt like tops, a couple of knit dresses, and a couple of skirts that are supposed to fit me. I would put my success rate, after trying about 10 things, at about 50%--in other words, no worse than just ordering from a website with something you like that you think might fit.
Lane Bryant jeans are a good bet--they can be pretty cute, and the quality isn't bad. I actually found the rise a little lower than I'd prefer. If you go with Lane Bryant, an added bonus is that you'll probably also end up wearing a smaller size than you expect. That always feels good. I never loved LB jeans, but I've never loved ANY jeans, so that's not too much of a criticism. |
I used to wear a size 18 or 20 last year (16 now) and when I did, I loved Lane Bryant's jeans!
I have found that I like the "mid rise" cut...not up to my waist, but not "low rise show your muffin top and plumber crack" either. It is a happy medium to the two extremes. (Which I don't find either flattering.) Mid rise is just a little below the waist/belly button. It is low enough to be below your natual waistline, but high enough that the fleshy muffin top stuff on your upper hip isn't spilling over. I am sorry, but chunky girls in low rise jeans and tight t-shirts, where you can see the flesh oozing out/muffin top is NOT flattering, no matter how trendy it might be. It also puts the accent on the muffin top...and NOT on the curve of the natural waist. |
I am from UK and was in US over xmas, I have a very small waist compared to my hips and butt. I found GAP jeans even the low rise jeans poorly fitting. I got them for $11 but they were orginal $45.
They were ok when I first tried them on but as soon as I wore them for 20 mins the gapped at the hips and slid down |
I wear only Old Navy .... I have found they always fit me and have short. I wish you luck! Congrats on needing a smaller size!!!

When I was in an 18/20 and over....Lane Bryant jeans worked the best. I have an hourglass shape so it's really hard to find some that don't actually leave the Grand Canyon gaping in the back lol

I know exactly how that is! I'm 21 and a size 18/20 (depending on the brand). I have always found trouble finding the right fit with jeans. I recently bought a pair a Lane Bryant and I love them! They fit so perfectly!!! They have pants for every body shape and the designs are trendy so you will feel comfortable wearing them.

we're the same pants size... I get most of my pants at Fashion Bug and Walmart (cheap, but lots of variety so I can always find something...)

I have exactly the same problem. I'm 18 with really, really wide hips... but my waist isn't huge. I've had good luck with Goody's Junior's Plus (if you have a Goody's where you are).

I also love the Lane Bryant jeans for dif. body types (i'm the blue one). The unfortunate thing is that i'm a size 14/12 which is just out of the plus sizes...and I really miss that darn store because I have not been able to find a non plus-size brand that does the body shape thing and I really need it! |
