Lotions???

I would like to find a nice body lotion. I used to use the bath and body stuff but I would like to try something that is less about scent and more about good hydration. Right now I am not really using anything when I get out of the shower.

Any ideas on something that isn't too $$$$?

Thanks...

nelie 12-06-2008 10:37 PM

I'd look for some shea butter cream. My favorite lotions are $$$ but even in the regular store, you should be able to find some decent lotions. Whole Foods 365 brand has a good lotion too and it comes in unscented.

zeffryn 12-06-2008 11:13 PM

I really like Gold Bond ultra moisturizing cream. It has a very neutral scent and really moisturizes well. I use their regular body cream and their foot lotion. Both are quite inexpensive and last a long time. The moisture also lasts all day without feeling greasy.

For my hands, I use Crabtree and Evelyn's Gardener's lotion exclusively.

murphmitch 12-06-2008 11:27 PM

I use Curel unscented. It was recommended by my dermatologist and works really well.

PhotoChick 12-06-2008 11:54 PM

I just started using pure coconut oil a couple of months ago and I love it. I think I got a big tub of it at Whole Foods for about $6.

I vote for Aveeno. My mom gave me a sampler pack a few years ago for Christmas. It is so silky without being greasy. I love the soft scent of the one with a lavender cap.

Another tip too-I once read an article about dry brushing your whole body before showering. It is supposed to be an important step for both healthy skin and proper waste elimination. You might do a Google search for more info. It helps you to just slow down and think about pampering yourself for a few minutes.

luvja 12-08-2008 11:01 PM

I looooove lotions. Regarding the post above, Aveeno IS wonderful, but not cheap.
I'm a huge fan of Palmer's Cocoa Butter, and recently, Palmers FIRMING butter. It actually DOES work. My skin looks fantastic. It's not even $5 for a bottle, but the bottles are small and one lasts like less than 2 weeks with once a day use. I cannot NOT lotion after a shower, I just don't feel right. I also like Olay Quench. Smells good.

Dry brushing is a GREAT thing. I've done it before in the past, it's just time consuming and I fell out of the habit. It makes my skin so smooth though. I really ought to get back to doing it regularly.

I generally use the scented stuff -- currently the Vanilla Sugar Body Cream from Bath and Body Works, but for my face, and as a general hand cream, I use Cetaphil -- I also wash my face with their daily facial cleanser. Both were recommended to me, on seperate occasions, by my dermatologist and my redheaded, sensitive-skinned family doctor...he swears by the stuff.

For some reason, I am allergic to Curel. It gives me a rash. I know a lot of people swear by it...but it just makes me itch and turns me red.

What's really nice and hydrating is Neutrogena Sesame Body Oil. After showing (but while still in the shower), squirt a bit and rub it over and into your skin really well. Then get out and towel yourself off. By the time you towel dry, not really a lot gets on the towel and it's not really "oily" anyway. It's really hydrating and smells great!

MY vote is for Aveeno. I used to have really bad alligator skin, then started using Aveeno body wash and thier lotion. Now no more flakey skin. I also use Aveeno cleansers for my face. Wonderful stuff.

mayness 12-12-2008 01:00 PM

My hands and feet are the only parts of me that get dry enough to need lotion, but I looove anything with shea butter. My favorite is the shea butter hand cream from L'Occitane, but in order to not go bankrupt buying that stuff  I tried a few other brands and I like the Jergen's cream that has Shea Butter and Cocoa Butter. The cream would probably be too heavy for all-over use, but there's a lotion that's thinner.

JerseyGyrl 12-12-2008 02:33 PM

Olay Quench is excellent.
I am a BIG fan of Bath & Body Works body lotions, body cream and body butter.

I am a L'Occitane junky. I stock up around the holidays when they have all their specials on the smaller tubes. The stuff lasts me all year. Also, try Amazon. I've found it for pretty cheap on there, especially this time of year.

But yes, mose people know that just about anything with a "L'Occcitane label on it will put a smile on my face :)

Thighs Be Gone 12-12-2008 07:27 PM

I really like the Oil of Olay products. I did Bath & Body Works forever but now I just find it isn't nurturing to my skin.

Smiling_Sara 12-12-2008 08:49 PM

I just got some lotion from Lush called Charity Pot. It's very creamy, and doesn't leave you feeling oily

PearFreak 12-13-2008 08:50 AM

I like my Olay Quench--- not greasy, lasts a long time... moisture-wise, nice subtle scent and a big bottle that lasts a long time. Couldn't ask for anything more.

looloo86 12-13-2008 08:50 AM

i suggest you try these brand there lotions are very light and easily absorebed.
kamill.
jergens.
vaseline
dove
johnsons.
Good luck

I like Kiss My Face aloe and olive oil. It is a bit pricey, but organic and wonderful. My whole family will use it, including my husband and children which makes it worth the money. I just couldn't imagine my husband trying my Olay Quench :)- though that also gets my vote.

DCHound 12-16-2008 12:22 PM

I love anything and everything L'Occitane! It is pricey though. QVC is a good place to find great deals on L'Occitane products.

I have several different moisturizers I use every day. For the face, Oil of Olay Reginerist and also the eye serum. It's expensive, about $30 a jar, but a jar lasts 2 months using it twice daily, and it has made a dramatic difference! It's totally worth it.

For body, I use plain, store-brand Vitamin E cream all over in the morning and Palmer's Cocoa Butter at night. (I am on a very low carb plan and the smell of the Cocoa Butter, since it smells so chocolately, makes me nauseated, so I only wear it at night when I won't notice it as much).

After I put on the Vitamin E cream in the AM, I then add just a dab of Crabtree & Evelyn's rosewater hand/body lotion with shea butter. It smells wonderful--the vitamin E cream has almost no scent at all.

I am very fortunate in that I was born with a pretty good complexion, but the difference the vitamin E cream and the Cocoa Butter have made has been really dramatic. And, both are inexpensive, particularly compared to designer brands that don't work as well.

Thanks

I am going to have to pick a few of these and start experimenting....And yes I am going to Google Dry Brushing as soon as I am done typing....hehe...Thanks again!:)

Lotion is my forte, I work in the personal care industry:

I really like Aveeno... usually buy the economy size with the pump on it, especially in the winter! The pump is great too because it's hassle-free for putting it on directly after the shower.

BBW has some great shea butter lotions in their True Blue Spa line, too! There's a Mega Butter that has 4 different kinds of butter (mango, aloe, avocado, and shea) in it that I love! These are great options if you don't want an over-powering fragrance.

I also really like the Aromatherapy line from BBW which is lighter and plant-based. The body butters from The Body Shop are great, too. The thicker the product, the less you'll need so it'll last you longer than a "thinner" product.

What a lot of people don't realize though is that exfoliating is a must! Especially in the dry winter months. If you're slathering moisturizers on super dry skin and not seeing results, it's because the dry skin isn't going anywhere!!! (I see this a lot with knuckles in the winter... ick!)

Another common misconception is that lotions with alcohol in them are drying. This is not always true. Typically the alcohols used in higher-end lotions (Cetyl, Cetearyl...) are fatty alcohols. These act as emolients to keep the water-based and oil-based ingredients from seperating.

stacylambert 12-16-2008 05:09 PM

I like Olay Quench lotion and Neutrogena Body Butter.

Angel's_Dust 01-09-2009 04:52 PM

AVEENO!! I use the Positively Radiant face cream, face cleanser, and body lotion. They even out my skin tone. My face glows and looks almost spotless. The dark spots around my mouth disappear.

JerseyGirl83 01-09-2009 05:07 PM

DOVE cream oil lotion is my fav one! Its like 4 bucks and my skin has never felt softer.

Melody2006 01-09-2009 11:26 PM

I work at a hospital and my hands get so dry this time a year. My vote is Aveeno. The one with the pink ring around the pump (creamy moisturizing oil) b it's non-greasy!

CookieQueen 01-13-2009 07:13 PM

The BESt lotion I have ever used also happened to be one of the cheapest. Go to the dollar store and get a tub of petroleum jelly, some baby lotion, and either a lotion with vitamin e or some vitamin e soft gels. When you get home, mix them all together ( puncture the vitamin e pills if that is the route you go). You can then scent it however you like and the whole thing is cheap as dirt :)

Umberto 01-15-2009 06:03 AM

Another vote for aveeno, i have a cooling menthol one, its great, very light scent and not greasy

erynn1010 01-15-2009 08:50 AM

I use Jergens, it's Cherry Almond scented but it's a very light scent. I have dry skin really bad in the winter & it works wonders on me. I can still feel my soft skin at the end of the day, it's wonderful. You can get it Walmart.

annie175 01-15-2009 08:58 AM

Oil of Olay Quench is the only thing that stopped the dry skin and itching for me.

tiggy123 01-17-2009 07:42 AM

I have loads of body lotions, Vaseline aloe fresh is quite nice, but fragranced (smells a bit like cucumber). And E45 is not glamourous, but it's really cheap, unfragranced and is great for sensitive skin. For my face I use Johnson's face moisturizer, I think it wouldn't be enough for dry skin but my skin is a little bit oily.

Pinkie 01-17-2009 11:05 PM

I have EXTREMELY sensitive skin (almost everything causes eczema - sigh), but the Vaseline Intensive Moisture is perfect for my body (don't use it on my face). I use the Target knock-off, and it's just a nice. Has a barely-there, soft musk scent that's wonderful. Love it!

zenor77 01-17-2009 11:13 PM

My vote goes for the Whole Foods 365 brand lotion. I buy the unscented. I love it and as a bonus, it's free of parabens, sls, and petroleum. I keep a bottle in my desk at work too, since I live in a very dry climate. It's very inexpensive too.

nicki rose98 01-17-2009 11:15 PM

Aveeno is excellent. That's what I used for my daughter after she was born and I started to use it on myself as well. I actually hate lotions because they are too greasy but Aveeno was not like that

Thighs Be Gone 01-17-2009 11:23 PM

I am slipping and sliding tonight after putting coconut oil on my skin. It works amazingly WELL! ....AND, for $6 a quart, it's a true bargain. There is a ton of info. about it on the net.

RobinW 01-19-2009 01:37 PM

I use Suave oatmeal unscented and I love it. Cheap, doesnt compete with my perfumes and keeps me hydrated all day!

alinnell 01-19-2009 01:44 PM

I use Cetaphil and I love it. It's not greasy and it really, really moisturizes. I'll use perfumed/scented when I want to smell extra nice, though. Even my DD prefers how Cetaphil keeps her really dry skin moisturized but she loves the smell of Suave Shea and Cocoa butter lotion, so she uses the Cetaphil on her legs and the Suave on her arms.
