How often do you go through your closet?

When I started losing weight I told myself I wasn't gaining the weight back so I've been trying to give me too big clothes away when I hit each goal. I noticed I really need to give my closet a good spring cleaning. This made me wonder how often other people in the same situation go through their clothes - do you clean out seasonally? each time you hit a new size? Just periodically? I do a little of each!

GONNABE165 04-21-2008 04:46 PM

I've been getting rid of clothing as soon as it becomes to big - I don't want to be back in that size

Shopaholic1204 04-21-2008 05:03 PM

I clean out my closet seasonally. I save my fave clothes though, no matter what size they are.

Horo 04-21-2008 05:56 PM

I don't get rid of clothes, too big, to small, or for most other flaws - I can always make stuff in the right size out of them. Even the ugliest old clothing item a person has can be used for something... scrap fabric and such.

lupin 04-22-2008 11:41 AM

I need to clean out my cloths. Theres blacks bin bags full of them in a spare room but don't really feel like going through things I can't fit into anymore.
Very much planning on being able to fit into them again soon. Bearing in mind I only started yesterday so I dont have any cloths that are too big for me YET. :D

Ophelia924 04-22-2008 11:50 AM

It took me a long time to clean out my clothes I was down to a size 18 and still running around in size 28 jogging pants at times. It was when my own mother pantsed me that I knew I had to do something about the clothes in my closet. After I cleaned out my closet I seriously needed a shopping spree I owned like 8 pieces of clothing that were my true size. However, I am glad I didn't buy too much because now I am a size 12.

the slim me 04-22-2008 01:08 PM

I get rid of the old clothes for every 2 sizes I go down. Keeping them in the closet is just setting yourself up for failure. Besides, it's so good for moral to see yourself in clothes that actually fit.

I didn't buy many clothes at a time as I lost. Just what i needed. And shopping at used clothing stores is a good idea to increase your wardrobe while you are in transition. You aren't going to be in that size long, and it's such a waste to buy a lot of things that you aren't going to be wearing over a couple of months.

StillTryin 04-22-2008 05:48 PM

I have the 2 size rule also..because lets face it we all have FAT days no matter how big/small we are.

CountingDown 04-22-2008 07:07 PM

I have been cleaning out my closet monthly since I started this journey. I bag everything that is too large and take it to Goodwill the next time I am out. I do not keep clothing that is too big.

I also treat myself to a second hand store shopping spree every 10 lbs lost. In effect, I am renting clothing. I drop off at the back door and then go in the front and shop.
All of the things I donated this week were things I bought a few months ago.

Today's run netted a suit, jeans, shorts (which I badly needed), and capris. :D

tdiprincess 04-23-2008 12:06 AM

counting down, That is sooo true. when losing weight, there is no point in getting anything new..
I generally go through the closet when my jeans are getting too big. I lose weight quicker in my upper body and when I lose a jean size then I go shopping at the goodwill and consignment shops.. That means I'm down a size everywhere...

CyndiM 04-23-2008 06:08 AM

I clean out when I notice several items in a row look tent-like on me :) The thrift store folks love me by now and I love them because I couldn't have afforded all the sizes (so far 18/20 down to 8 and 10) without access to the thrift stores. I just got rid of all my summer clothes right out of storage. I decided to split the bounty between my three favorite thrift stores!

Heffalump 04-23-2008 07:36 AM

Your thread inspired me to go through my closet yesterday - now I seriously need to do some pants shopping, heh. :^:

I didn't have many clothes to start with and now I have exactly two pants left that fit me just right - so I'm holding on to some of the less baggier ones until I find the time and money to buy new ones, hopefully this weekend. Unfortunately I'm right between sizes at my three favorite stores... :dizzy: ...and the thrift stores in our area don't have a lot of good, "gently used" clothes and no new stuff at all.

About half of what I sorted out will go straight to Goodwill, a few nice pieces (jackets etc.) were set aside for a friend of mine, and the rest I put into a suitcase that I probably won't need again until August. By then I'll be able to decide what to do with them. I guess my rationale for keeping what I'm keeping is that I may use some of the tunics etc. for maternity wear if and when that time rolls around... :)

Amarie2pt0 04-23-2008 12:50 PM

I try to set a rule that if something new (or new to me) goes into my closet, something old must come out. So I guess I end up cleaning out every other size or so. I try very hard not to buy ahead of my weightloss, but when I see a super clearance sale at one of the dept stores, I will occasionally pick up things that I don't QUITE fit yet. So in that case, I can't really take something else out of my closet becuase I still need stuff that fits.

This journey started for me with a huge clean-out of my closet and storage. I had been holding on to clothes I hadn't fit into for 4 or more years. In some cases, I had size 6 suits that I never actually fit into when I WAS at my fittest. Letting go of all of it was like a huge weight off my shoulders. I absolutely loved that feeling, so now I get a thrill when I can clean my closet of things that are TOO BIG!

There's a clothing exchange at my doc's clinic where I take my cast-offs. That way others in the weightloss journey can make use of what I no longer need.

I love this! I wish I could find a clothing exchange like that. Do you know how it got started?

 and BIG congrats on your amazing loss! :carrot:

Jenguin, I definitely will toss out my 'fatter' clothes once I am solidly two sizes away from them. I also periodically clean out the closet, I do shop at thrift stores/consignment shops and sometimes get something 'just because it's such a bargain' and end up never wearing it.

but again hooray for thrift stores because they are such a good source of 'interim' clothes.

mrsaugie 04-24-2008 07:45 PM

i usually save some of my bigger stuff for work because i will disroy a pair of jeans in a year at work. so when it is too big it gets moved into the work pile and stays there until it either has holes in it or i have lost another size.

momentum 04-24-2008 08:14 PM

I just finished going through my closet and trying things on. I had a pair of dress slacks in there that were waaaaaaay too tight just a month ago. Amazing the difference 10 lbs makes. Now, they are almost to the point where they're too big. A pair of jeans that were a tad too snug last week... went up with a lot more ease, this. Clothes that are too big, or that don't 'hang' well... I am NOT keeping. I'm thrilled about the prospect of never seeing OR fitting them again!

Apple Cheeks 04-25-2008 11:03 PM

I go through my closet every year and get rid of things. In recent years it hasn't been because of weight loss, though. I try to be tough with myself and get rid of anything I haven't worn in a year or more, regardless of how much I like it or hope to fit back into it one day.

Now that I am losing weight, I will be sure to get rid of all the billowy, "flattering," tent-like clothes I have. I will be HAPPY to do it! :D

However, I think I will hold on to at least one outfit, so I can try it on from time to time. It's a big morale boost for me to wear baggy clothes that used to be just right (or almost too small) for me.

SephyFowl 04-26-2008 02:24 PM

This thread made me go look through my closet and WOW I didn't know my body had changed THAT much in a couple of weeks. I looked like I had my hourglass shape back and didn't look bad. I am pleasantly surprised and I'm getting rid of a BUNCH of clothes! (keeping some that I'm almost into and won't wear tight) YAY

maryea 04-26-2008 02:42 PM

I haven't lost enough this time around (and hope its the last time!!) to toss any clothes due to weightloss. I have to lose about 20 lbs before I notice much difference in my clothes size for some reason. Once I lost 33 lbs and my kids (grown) didn't even notice it until I'd lost that much, and one (who rarely sees me even) didn't notice my loss at all!! Makes you wonder...

Anyway...to get back to the topic :-) I go through my closet quarterly usually.

Rayelle 04-27-2008 01:36 PM

I have the 'hanger rule' in our house, once all of your hangers are used up and have more clothes than hangers then you need to get rid of some clothes. So, about every 3 months I donate a small bag to charity.

h0cusp0kus 05-01-2008 03:47 AM

Typically, I get rid of clothes as I grow out of them. I do, however, hang on to my biggest pair of pants. They remind me of where I came from and that I never want to go back there.

lumifan4ever 05-09-2008 02:59 PM

I meant to keep a pair of my biggest sized pants and i forgot!!! Oh well. I usually clean my closet out anywhere from 3 to 6 months. I just don't think about it very often. I just cleaned it out about 2 months ago. I'm not dropping sizes very quickly now for some reason. Must be because i'm eating too much. lol. I do try to only keep clothes that fit well and clothes that i want to shrink down into. Like they fit, but i don't like the fat roll i can see in the too tight t-shirt, that seem to be in style. The biggest size pants i have in my closet is one pair of size 8's. They fit kinda of like a 6 though so i keep them because i don't have very many pairs of work pants. I really need to buy more pants. I have like 3 pairs of pants. That's 3 days of slacks, one day in a skirt, and fridays i get to wear my only pair of jeans. It was only 2 months ago i finally went and bought me some smaller panties. I wear a size 4 misses pants but was wearing a size 12 misses panties. So...it felt so good to buy myself a size 5 panties. Matter of fact i just bought me some new panties this morning...with tinkerbell on them!! I love tinkerbell. I just couldn't resist. I got them in a size 7 juniors (since i can wear a size 7 junior jeans). Hope they fit.

Okay...sorry for rambling. I just really clean out my closet when i've dropped another size and i think about it. Sometimes, it's like Rayell says, when you run out of hangers, you got too many clothes. lol.
