Hi All:

Welcome SUSAN. I like your motto that its not the first time you lost 40 pounds but it will be the last. I also am proud to me part of this "group of losers".
Slacking right now when I should be doing. Seems when I get overwhelmed instead of hitting things head on I put them off. Today is the first of the month so work will be insane. I have in-laws coming to visit & a family wedding tonight. So instead of cleaning and getting ready I am here visiting with you guys. That's okay I need to come first and my in-law visits are STRESSFUL.
Have a good weekend all. Also this not the end of summer, its only three quater's over JUNE JULY AUGUST and SEPTEMBER.
I need that extra quarter.

Just curious - what do you do in a situation where there are few if any good food choices?
Last night I was at a fair grounds - the food was regular fair menu - hotdogs/fries/hamburgers etc. After careful consideration I decided to have none of the above, just had a few of DH's fries.

What do other people do when the food choices are all poor, and planning ahead to bring your own food isn't an option?

For the fair, why isn't bringing your own food an option? I have a big purse and can easily smuggle in baggies of veggies or dried fruit. I would probably eat something in advance so I'm not starving and ravenously hungry and then pick 1 thing at the fair that I will have. Life is too short to go without Fair food for the rest of my life! A little bit of cotton candy, snow cone or a caramel apple would probably be my choices. I also love roasted corn on the cob without butter at the fair! A plain hamburger (no bacon, no cheese) with lettuce tomato and mustard would be another option for me.

Glory - I agree bringing food to the fair was indeed an option.
Just didn't plan ahead.

This happens occasionally though, I find myself hungry and in situations where virtually all the food choices are poor.

I was really just curious as to how other people cope in similar situations.

Good question Susan.
Sometimes preparing ahead doesnt happen or I just choose not to do it.
In thoses cases I make the best choose I can while acknowledging that its not going to be perfect. This chooses vary according to the situation.
I do try to choose wisely, but its often very difficult. So I do try and bring my own as much as possible.

Hi everyone. I wanted to let you all know about my appt. with the orthopedic surgeon yesterday. He took a look at my foot and now my toes are very much drooping as well as the whole left foot. PT hasn't seemed to help yet. I have a nerve study scheduled for next Friday. Has anyone ever had this done? They told me to have someone drive me because it would be too painful to drive myself home. This doesn't sound fun. The doctor said that because of the traumatic injury that I may have a nerve "trapped". Anyway, I will let you all know how this turns out. I am having a terrible time trying to walk around my house. anytime the immobilizer boot is off, I simply can't control this foot and I fall. Luckily I haven't injured anything else yet.

Default Maintainers - September Chat!

Whoops! I'm a day late getting the thread started for September!

I'm going to try to move the September posts from the August thread over here ... we'll see if it works or if they end up in cyberspace somewhere. I suspect they'll move in order of posting, so if the thread seems weird, that's why.

Be right back.

OK, it worked so we're good to go for a new month. I can't believe that summer is (unoffically) gone already!

Lily, my son had a nerve study done after he herniated two discs in his back in a car accident. I'm not going to lie to you -- he said the test was pretty painful. His test lasted about an hour. But it's an important test to determine what kind of nerve damage you have, so I guess you have to grit your teeth and do it. You're one tough lady and you'll be fine, I know.

Susan, if I'm in a situation like yours, I try to make the 'better bad choice'. In other words, I don't throw up my hands and give myself permission to go way off plan. Not eating tends to backfire on me because I lose all my willpower when I get too hungry, so I would eat something ... whatever is the best of the bad choices. In your scenario of burgers, hot dogs, and fries, I would have had a burger without cheese or the bun. Too high in fat for sure, but a good protein source. Then I would have hit the veggies and lean protein hard for the rest of the day.

Those kind of situations come up fairly often, especially when traveling, and I just do the best I can. Although one time I found myself in an airport terminal with 15 minutes to find something to eat on a layover and the only choices were Pizza Hut and Cinnabon!! There are NO 'better bad choices' at Pizza Hut or Cinnabon! (I got a coffee at Cinnabon and did without).

Lily, I had a nerve test done on both arms to confirm a carpal tunnel diagnosis. It really does hurt while they're doing it (to the point of tears), but it's not a lasting pain, goes away pretty quickly. Good luck and be strong - you need to get your mobility back!

Meg - I agree that traveling is THE WORST for getting decent food. When I leave, I take my own from home which is fine. It's the coming home where I run into trouble (unless I've been visiting family). Last month I flew home from Portland, and there was more choice than usual for an airport. I was able to get some veggie dish at a Panda Express. Not ideal, but certainly better than pizza or cinnabon! The airline was selling food on the flight - a cheeseburger! I was glad I'd eaten. I'm flying to Houston in late October, and it's a leave-at-midnight/arrive-mid-afternoon flight, so I'm already trying to figure how much food I can carry with me. Wonder if I can take my own water by then.....

I doubt that we'll ever be able to take water again, but I'd be OK with it if they sold bottled water on the plane.

You're exactly right - it's the coming home that's the hard part! We're flying to Phoenix on Tuesday and it's a 4 hr 20 min flight. I already know what I'm taking to eat and will be just fine. But leaving to come home a week later is a whole different story! Someone should put together a healthy food guide to all the different airports, you know? Like Concourse C at Pittsburgh International has X, Y and Z. A turkey lite at Quiznos isn't too bad (I eat half at a time) and I do OK at Wendys. Any other suggestions?

Thanks Meg and Waterrat for the information. I do have to get this done, but it seems pretty scary. I have some pain pills I could take but they probably don't want me to do this. I'll ask. It might interfere with the test. I have had so many painful things done in my life, that this might not seem to be much different. It really bothers me not to be exercising. I feel like I am definitely losing muscle tone in my left calf. If I ever get my foot back to working properly no one will hear me gripe about that treadmill, I'll be walking my butt off.

Meg did you have a problem with gaining weight while unable to exercise due to your shoulder? I am holding steady for now, but this is a big concern of mine.

Meg, I actually had a decent meal at a Chile's (at the airport, called express, or to go, not the full deal anyway). Something called Southwest Egg Rolls Actually tortillas filled with a bean mixture and some spicy sauce for dipping. They were an appetizer so not too big, and were very good - esp with the beer I had with them.

Hi ho. I couldn't start another day without saying thanks to everyone who posts here. These days I'm struggling. The summer was a struggle, and the fall isn't looking any too cheery. But every day I come here to read and absorb and try to "stay in the zone" .... or, at the very least, catch a glimpsse of it. Your thoughts, advice and admonitions are always what the doctor ordered, and when I miss, I always feel left out and lost.

Today should be a good one. Lunch is already made -- the ever-satisfying chicken, brown rice and spinach. The weather is turning glorious -- warm days, cool nights. And IU won its first football game. What's not to like!

Now, I'm going to go print out two other threads that are running: Anne's "Rules I never break" are the perfect reminder for me right now. And the one on the goals that sustain you when the pounds are gone ... much good wisdom there.

And with that I must run.

Hugs to all.

Hi All:

Airegrrl sorry to here you are struggling. Summer is difficult for me as well that vaca mentality gets me. But its back to routines and structure so lets hope it gets easier. This journey has lots of dips and curves but hold on and the road will smooth out. Always good to here from you.

Lily good luck with the test for your foot. Hope it went or goes well.

Good week to all.

Reg, Thanks. The test will be this coming Friday. My MIL said she has had a nerve study done for carpal tunnel and that it was pretty uncomfortable but not unbearable. I think she has more pain tolerance than me. lol. It is scheduled as a 2 hr. procedure.
