cookbooks
Hopefully it's okay to post this thread in maintainers, since it's not specifically about maintaining per se, but here goes. I figured maintainers would have some good answers!
What are your favorite healthy cookbooks? Right now I have a few healthy cookbooks but I usually just modify recipes to make them healthier. It would be great to build up my library with some good stuff! I have the AHA's Low Salt cookbook (my fiance has high blood pressure), which is pretty good, but it has no pictures and I never get motivated to use it when there are no pictures! Right now half my recipes come from Cooking Light. Thanks in advance! |
My favorite recent cookbook is "Conscious Cuisine" by Cary Neff.
For me this is definite weekend cooking though, as the recipes are fairly complicated. Yuuuummy though, and really healthy. I especially love his baked goods. I'm with you on the Cooking Light, I love their recipes. |

But I don't have a good answer for you - and am anxiously awaiting other responses! My recipes mostly come from the Internet or my own recipes that I've adapted. I recently bought Cook's Illustrated's The Best Light Recipe but haven't actually tried anything yet. I love all their other cookbooks (though they're mega-fattening) and was looking forward to some new ideas, but the recipes in it are all still pretty high calorie (chocolate chip cookies reduced by 10 calorie per cookie etc). I guess their definition of 'light' and mine is a bit different! :lol: I would definitely try some of their recipes for guests and holidays, though. |
My absolute favorite cookbooks are The New American Basics Cookbook and the Silver Palate Cookbooks by Julee Rosso and Sheila Lukins. They aren't light, but they are (for the most part) adaptable.
I like Saveur magazine for pictures and interesting food stories and ethnic food. For the most part, I don't use cookbooks but make up recipes based on healthy ingredients, with lots of herbs for seasoning. If I need a "real" dessert, I just make or buy the real thing, and in addition have a bowl of fruit and a yogurt dip. I'm usually surprised that the fruit is gone at the end of the eveining and the cheesecake is still there. Mel |

I use a lot of recipes from Cooking Light (mostly their annual cookbooks), plus some WW cookbooks - Simply the Best is my favorite. Other than that, I either adapt family favorites, or get recipes from here at 3FC, or Dotti's Weight Loss Zone. People's recommendations often lead me to better stuff than a cookbook. :) And I love Cook's Illustrated, though most of the recipes are too calorie-laden for every day.

For Vegetarian fare, I find Jeanne Lemlin's cookbooks are fabulous. I especially use her Vegetarian Classics, but the others (MainCourse Vegetarian Pleasures, Simple Vegetarian Pleasures, and Quick Vegetarian Pleasures) are also good. Of course, I have never made a recipe that I didn't play with a little, but her basic recipes are really tasty, healthy and, in the case of her Quick Vegetarian Cookbook, easy to put together.

On the Weight Watchers website they post a new recipe every day. I print out the ones that appeal to me, have tried quite a few (most are quite yummy!), and have a 3-ring binder that I keep them all in, sorted by category.
I also will check the Food Network website and look for recipes from their 'healthy' shows. Moosewood Cookbooks are usually healthy but not always the most low-cal. I will modify them - use a little less oil, etc. to make them fit into my diet. They use some unusual ingredients, some are vegetarian recipes, etc. so it provides some variety in my food choices.
