Anne! :crossed: that your little  stays put just a little while longer!
 at weighing yourself after having an IV. Geez, and here I thought you were the most sensible one of the bunch of us. ;) I gained at least ten pounds when I had surgery and IVs -- it will be gone soon enough. Just rest and put your feet up and take it easy, Mom to Be! Ali -- your post just made my day! How upbeat and positive you sound! :D And a fall wedding -- how exciting! Do you have your dress yet? As for me, life's been pretty much work. I have too many clients, if you can believe it, and haven't had a day off in weeks. Four appointments yesterday and five today  I've resolved two things this week: I'm going to take off one day a week AND I have to start scheduling in my exercise because it's been pushed aside too often recently. I have a little break in the action coming up -- DS is graduating on Friday from sound engineering school and DH and I are flying down to Orlando for Labor Day weekend. So maybe a few days in the sun, admidst discussions about 'so what are you going to DO now?' He's getting an associate's degree and I'd like him to stay on and get his Entertainment Business BS and be done with school. But this is a child who is impossible to influence, so we just tend to sit back and see what develops. Can't type any more -- I hurt my shoulder working out a few days ago and it's getting cranky. So :grouphug: to all of you! |
Sweater Girl: your post really lifted me too. You are motoring!
Anne: hope the baby decides to take her time. There's no big hurry, after all! And I hope you can rest and relax a bit. Now, Meg! Quote:

50 tomorrow and a whole new decade opens up before me. So I am reading a book called Fantastic Voyage about how to live forever. As the blurb says: 'From the self-evidently sensible (take plenty of exercise) to the truly mind-boggling (reduce biological ageing by the injection of nanobots), it lays out our paths into the future with plenty of practical recommendations for age-deferring in the present.' I rather like these crazy health books. It's very autumnal here. |
Happy birthday, dear Silverbirch! Mel and I can personally attest that there IS life after 50. Right, Mel?
PS -- I hear you ... you're a very wise woman re your advice to me. Came home from a six hour stint at the gym this afternoon and ate way too much and I know it's tiredness, not hunger. :dizzy: (I also gave away my packet of emergency protein shake mix to a client so was left high and dry when I was starving, with predictable results) I promise that I'll take one day off a week (OK, after I make it through this week). :) |
:hb: Happy Birthday Silver :hb:

Hi,
Anne - cook this baby for a little bit more. My third one wanted to get out earlier and I had to be on bed rest for awhile, so I know how you feel. Trust me, they babies need their mommies, and as long as they can stay inside, let them stay :) After all, it is not forever - ha-ha! :D Meg - I am surprized that you do not let yourself to take days off :?: . Sometimes we forget BUT we need those days off - trust me! Hope graduation trip will do you good! Silver - happy birthday :gift: ! Sweater Girl - you message is so positive :flow2: , it is nice to read it on crappy Monday morning - thianks! I am glad to announce that I am still sticking to 20 -30 min cardio first thing in the morning :ebike: . Unfortunately no amount of cardio compensates a bag of chocolate candies, so scale is where it was before, but I tell myself it could be worse. This weekend was very intense - company party, rafting trip and agility performance... Also news that FIL is very bad and highly likely is gravely ill with cancer. So hubby was nervous that he can not leave soon as there are no tickets available this week, which resulted in arguing and i ate a bag of candies (thanks God it was only sandwich size zip lock bag, nevertheless I thought I am past binging). However I have to admit it helped me thru the first part of agility parformance , as I felt like I am drunk :o but my dog was miraculously good :) Anyways, second show was MUCH better (or chocolate "high" worn off?) - we DID it! So now i am beat - biceps and back hurts after 5 hours of white water rafting, and I have blisters after wearing high heels for the first time in ages for the Friday party! Cheers, Sandy. |
Happy Birthday, SilverBirch! Life after 50? I wouldn't know, dahlink! I'm only 39 ;) Mel |
My friend who is studying to become a personal trainer just sent me this .....
WHAT HAPPENS WHEN WE TURN 40? A loss in muscle tissue. * 3kg(7 pounds) muscle loss/decade and accelerates after age 45 * This negativellly affects strength, edurance, metabolic rate, bone density, body composition, functional abilities and posture *This loss is dominated by a lossin the number and size of fast twitching muscle fibers * This results in a reduction in power, reaction time and speed of movement A reduction in cardiovascular fitness * Aerobic capacit decreases 10% each decade * Activities of daily living start to become more challenging * Movement starts to be avoided to reduce fatique A drop in metabolic rate * Resting metabolic rate drops approximately 2% per decade * Reduction in RMR parallels the loss of muscle mass * Results in reduced caloric requirements (100+ calories less per day) and can lead to creeping obesity An increase in body fat * Experience an average weight gain of 10 pounds per decade (women increase from 25% - 43% body fat and men increase from 18% to 38% body fat) * Body fat distribvution changes such that more internal fat is deposited * As women's estrogen levels drop, they typically start to store fat more like a man * Menopause is one period during a woman's life that fat cell number can be increased! *52% of women in their 50's are overwight. And more than 1/2 of women age 30-49 also weigh too much * Increases risk ofr obesity related disorders sucha s coronary artery disease, hypertension, diabetes and osteoarthritis Loss of strength * Paralles the loss of muscle mass * 50% of the strength of young adults Decrease in bone density * Bone density decreases at a rate of 1% per year after the age of 35 * Increased risk for fractures (forearm, lumbar, wrist, vertebrae, hip) * 25% of post-menopausal women have enough bone loss to be diagnosed as osteoporotic I will continue with this next week, there is a lot more to come. Don't get depressed there are answers for this that will come down the road. Wanna bet she suggests weight training? |
Interesting stuff Susan, thanks for sharing.
I can see why the scale doesn't move downward any more. I need to address my exercise comittment. Thanks for the wakeup call. |
Try Weight Training! Heavy weight training, the heavier the better ;) and eat clean. Mel |
I am going home to do my weights tonight!!! (Not that I've been skipping them lately, but these posts just reinforce my resolve!)
Nothing like a good kick in the butt. Thanks ladies. :) |
Just wanted to post a big THANK YOU for this forum. I'm going through a bunch of the keeper posts and am sitting here blown away.
It's taken me a few years to get the whole picture about this weightloss thing. I started out just walking, still eating bad. Joined a gym, added weights, but did that when I wanted, which wasn't much. I was sporadic in my efforts. I have finally learned through the journey that I need to plan my meals & eat the right things, and exercise consistently to reach my goals. Now after finding this forum I see that I will have to train my brain to do this ALWAYS. Wow, what an eye opener finding this forum has been. I hope to reach my final goal soon, but I have been maintaining at this weight for over two years, but have just recently had the light bulb go off as far as being consistent and will soon be seeing these last few pounds disappear forever! Anyways, didn't mean to write a book, just wanted to say Thank you all for your wisdom! |
Hi maintainers,
Hi Mel, I like your post !!! I AM weight training, and I added weight again today !!! Compared to you my weights are very low, but compared to one year ago I have come a tremendous way in strength and endurance. I easily get injuries in my joints so I do weight training basically with weights as heavvy as possible to do 5 -10 reps with. Excercise today: bike 10 kms flat land to bring DD to school, and willfetch her also in the afternoon. Also UBW with heavvier weight ! thanks for all the support maintainers! rabbit |
