Silly me! Spelling mistake. I meant keto. Basically very low carb and high fat and protein.

Hi ange! I lost about 50-55 lbs back in 2004-2005 and it took me a little over a year of counting calories and learning how to exercise. After that I maintained within a 5-10lb range for a long time, had one blip up 15lbs which I relost counting calories, and then got pregnant with twins and my specialist OB told me "gain as much weight as you possibly can" because of the high-risk nature of my pregnancy. I was about 135lbs when I got pregnant, and when I delivered my kids (two months early, I can't imagine how much I would have weighed if I'd carried to term) I was a little over 200lbs. After they were born I ended up at 170-ish. That was in 2013 and I've been working on and off on getting back down since they weaned in 2014. Losing weight with two small children is a lot harder than it was when I was young and had no responsibilities.

In any case, I made it back down to 146 last spring, but then my dad's health deteriorated and he passed away last summer, and watching my weight was the last thing on my mind (rightly so, IMO, I don't regret it). I gained back up to 160-ish. Now I'm at 148 and trying to get lower with a weight loss app called Noom. I have mixed feelings about the app, but at least it's making me pay attention to what I'm eating. Unfortunately now that I'm in my mid-30's and my job is very sedentary, I need to eat down at like 1200 calories or less to lose weight, which is hard for me motivation-wise. I'm still working on it though.

My focus for this week is on getting back to regular jogging. Last week I managed to get out of bed and jog 2x, and I went today so I'm on track for 3x this week. My kids got bikes for their birthday so I spent some time this weekend doing some brisk walking with them while they rode their bikes. Once they're comfortable enough on them to ride longer distances or go faster, I'll pull out my bike and DH's bike too and maybe we can all go places together! It would be fun to get some exercise with the kids. I used to take them to kids yoga at my yoga studio which was at the same time as adult yoga, but the studio stopped offering it at a convenient time for me sadly. I should check their schedule and see if they're bringing it back this summer.

This is Day 8 for me of eating in a small deficit, healthy food. Scale has not budged but I will be patient. I have changed my mindset from "maintainer" to "loser" and I feel confident I can stay on plan!!

My exercise is consistent and I have no desire to do more because it might make me super hungry. My exercise is 15K steps per day, hike once a week and resistance training 3X per week for 30 minutes. Actually, I'm building garden beds this week which probably burns a bunch of calories too.

Hang in there everyone!

It's pretty much the same, I think. But I also think Atkins was more restrictive. I started doing the diet Thursday--but not 100% as I didn't have all the foods I needed. So Thursday through Sunday was about 75% on plan and then Monday was 100%. And I like it! Dinner last night was super good. And I've lost weight--about half a pound a day so far. And DH's blood sugar is reading lower than it has for a long, long time. I keep searching for new recipes to try and some things look quite appealing. I've stocked up on almond flour and coconut flour (will try a bread recipe this weekend) and Swerve to put in my tea instead of honey.

Thanks Jayell for bringing me here. I'm still learning the ropes around the site.
I've posted a story about myself if anyone would like to catch up. It's the last post (435)

Welcome Pina! My niece is currently in Australia for a month of vacation and when she returns home she'll enter school to become a Physician's Assistant (she is currently an RN). Australia and New Zealand are also on my bucket list. Maybe in a few years.

Update on my keto adventure: I kind of started last Thursday, but not totally immersed as I didn't have all the groceries needed. Today will be my first full day, although Monday and Tuesday were close to full keto. And guess what? I've lost 4 pounds. And I don't feel at all like I'm on a diet. I like this!

Thanks for your welcome, Michelle and Alinnell. Our nearest town is Yeppoon (Queensland's central subtropical coast) and our home is close to the beach where I walk each sunrise.

We are also travel-mad and are running out of places to head off to. In October we're off to E.Canada and N.E. USA for the colours. We'll do the 2 x Princess land tours sandwiched between 2 Princess cruises, so a delicious 35 days away!

Alinell - What are your macros for the keto plan? That's a nice loss so far.

Approximately this: 16 g net carbs, 98 grams fat and 79 grams protein. I'm still tweaking it.

Enjoy your travels! Our next big one is a year from now when we take an 18 day cruise from Florida through the Caribbean (including Cuba) and the Panama Canal and on up to San Francisco.

Looks good. I guess you've found the keto calculator (ankerl one). I had a few attempts at both keto and LCHF, but found the fat content too high. Maybe it had something to do with the fact that I had my gall bladder removed ages ago.

Nice cruise next year. We did FLL - LA - Alaska in 2015 on the Pacific Princess. Loved Alaska!

So we found out today that Trixie's tumour was malignant. Don't know what that means yet in terms of how long she has left or what options for treatment exist. I'm reading up on mammary tumours and will confer with the vet next week.

I think, from what I've read so far, I'll keep her comfortable and active for as long as she wants to go on and then we'll end it.

Hubby wanted to bring home ice cream as consolation. I said "no thanks". I suppose that's a positive in all of this.

Dagmar, I'm so sorry to hear about Trixie. I don't know much about cancers in dogs, but in humans there are so many variations that even "malignant" can have a spectrum of how fast things progress and what is treatable and how. I'm sure you will keep her happy and comfy for as long as she can stay that way.

Welcome, Pina!

Allison, I've heard so many people have success with keto and really love it. I would love to hear some of the specific meals you end up making. Personally I am a carb fiend and would live on bread/rice/pasta alone if I could reasonably do so. I am just glad to get my sugar cravings down (lately have mostly just been avoiding sweets).

Dagmar - I'm so sorry about Trixie.

Hi Pina!

My brother and SIL were on the keto diet Feb and March. Bro lost about 35 pounds in five weeks, but... it almost killed him. He has some previous liver and kidney trauma from medications he takes for chronic cluster headaches, was in the hospital a few years ago almost in liver failure. As he doesn't do anything halfway, he was so far into ketosis this time around that his urine test (I didn't know they used test strips in the diet) was dark black. He started having significant symptoms - pain, nausea, etc. Ended up one step away from the hospital. So, before going all hard core keto, please talk to your doctor and make sure you don't have any contraindicated health conditions. My SIL lost about 18 pounds in the same time, and as far as I know has gained it all back with a return to a diet with carbs. I think bro has kept most of it off.

Not to be a downer on Keto, but I've heard a lot of negative health issues too. Yes, people lose weight, but high fat diets can be dangerous in general.

Another cruise lover here! We usually do Princess as well. Don't have one planned currently as we are focused on getting dd married in September. We are also helping younger dd move (hopefully) in early June. She *thought* she had 3 roommates lined up and was trying to find housing with them. It all fell apart yesterday as the other girls are living at home (2 out of 3) and don't seem ready to make a commitment. My dd's lease is up and she has to find housing, so she is back to square one. She is now looking through her church and has found at least some options to pursue.

Hubby left yesterday for Arizona (for work) but will see dd (the one with the roommate situation) tonight, so that's good. Not so good is that he comes home tomorrow evening and leaves Saturday morning, not returning until June. Sigh...
