Cats typically sleep 17 hours a day. I try to get my 8 hours, but there are times, like last night, when that is just impossible. What with getting up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom, multiple animal invasions and a horrific wind storm at midnight, I must have spent 8 hours in bed and only gotten 5 hours of sleep.
Stress doesn't usually make me eat or drink or anything like that. In fact, stress usually kills my appetite so I don't want anything. Ok, well, maybe a glass of wine, but not overdoing it. But stress does interrupt my sleep even more.
This weekend, DD is coming home as we have tickets to see West Side Story and then we're going to a new restaurant to celebrate my birthday a week early (since I'll be out of town on my actual birthday). And I have a friend coming in for the BNP Parabas Open tennis tournament. That complicates things a bit. I've invited her to go along to dinner, but don't want my in-laws to pay their portion. So now I'm thinking of not going to a restaurant, but then that means I'll be cooking. Don't know what to do!

I think almost every bad decision I have ever made - food or non-food related - can be traced back to lack of sleep.
Last night's dinner at the supper club/bistro place was amazing. Oh, guys. And I ate it all. But I'm choosing to have no regret, because it was so good, and I know I'm not doing that again any time soon. I did a mental, very inexact calorie tally for the meal and, well, let's just say, if the scale goes up this week, I'll know why.
So today is back to normal, even though I'd really just like cookies! This too shall pass.
Oh, krampus, add me to the PMS Haters Club. Some months aren't so bad, but sometimes it's like an evil alien has taken over my body. Yuck.

JenM, was this somewhere local that you guys went? I'm glad it was fantastic. Worth the splurge. I'm always stressed when I plan for something like that and it lets me down.
I seem to never get enough sleep, even when I do sleep long enough. And today my shoulders both ache - every time I woke up during the night sleeping on my side my shoulders were throbbing. DH very sweetly told me I was now old like him. Then I saw gray hair. Lovely. LOL

Shannon, do you know Scoutmob? They have some specials that they call "Handpicked" deals. This was one for a place in Kirkwood (near Decatur) called Sun in My Belly. The whole thing was a steal and worth the splurge. You can buy it now ($39 for 2 people) and it doesn't expire until June.
Now I feel like the devil on your shoulder.

Amen and ditto.
I never used to notice PMS time that much. Either it has genuinely gotten worse (I'm 37) or I am now more in touch with my body. I now make particular arrangements just for this time of month (don't have certain danger foods in house, try extra hard to override the sad-angryness when dealing with boyfriend and coworkers, etc).

I am fortunate that my BF "gets it." Yesterday he bought a half-gallon of chocolate ice cream, and tonight he's making steak and kale for dinner.
Shannon I think being disappointed with a meal is my #2 or #3 binge eating trigger. Like straight up "if this meal sucks I DESERVE ANOTHER FULL MEAL" insanity.

Have you ever grown it in a container, Megan? Since I will no longer have raised beds, I'm wondering what I can grow in pots on a patio. If I dig out the roses (I don't like roses anyway), I have a small area maybe 5' by 3' that I could grow kale and something else since I really only need 1 or 2 kale plants. I've been growing lettuce in pots for the past four years, and that's worked well. The tomatoes not so much, but I know it can be done. The sun was out (after the incredible hail storm) so my thoughts turn to gardening!

Oh Jen, that restaurant looks fantastic! I'm going to check out the Scoutmob deal.
Krampus - that is a binge trigger for me, too. XYZ wasn't what I expected, so I must have something better RIGHT NOW.
Megan - I want to add kale into my garden this year. I had little success with lettuce last year, but I think kale would be a good add.
JZJ - I also have to empty the house of trigger items during TOM, or bad things happen.
Sheila - my tomatoes did well last year, but I think I'm going to raise the height of my beds and put in some deeper soil this year for them. As they got taller last year they had some trouble, hope this will fix that.
We went out for a birthday dinner with our neighbors last night, then this weekend is DSS's party. After that the birthdays will be done. I think I can survive the party this weekend. Absolutely.

Just out of curiosity, what is your top binge trigger?

I haven't binged since 2011. I think being on a low fat low protein diet and trying to lose weight really fast was #1.
For just OVEREATING, being hung over or sleep deprived is #1. Bottomless pit that wants carbs every couple hours to stay awake.
How about others?

For me, it's just feeling deprived in general. Of anything, really.

Sleep deprivation is definitely my #1 trigger. And sadly, it doesn't have to be severe - even getting 6 hours of sleep is enough to send me running off to carb country.

I would think I was in heaven if I could get 6 hours sleep, that just doesn't happen for me.

So I had had such a bad night's sleep Tuesday night (woken up multiple times by pets, wind, etc.) that I decided to try to get more sleep last night. I was exhausted and headed off to bed a little after 8 PM (usually I go to bed around 9 or 9:30). Yeah, it didn't help. I woke up at 2 AM and started thinking of stuff at work (stress) and never got back to sleep.
I did manage to have a more healthy, less calorie breakfast than usual, though (I've been REALLY bad lately eating 3 breakfast taquitos with salsa--they have to be over 100 calories each and loaded with fat!). Instead, today I had two slices of 100% ww toast--dry. I don't know why, but I do like a good toast dry. Well, I like it just as well with butter and jam, but I did manage to stay away from that today!

Sleep deprivation/tiredness is a big trigger for overeating and feeling false hunger for me, too. And it doesn't take much for me to feel sleep deprived. If I'm out doing field work for the day and moving around, my body can keep going and I'm ok. If I'm sitting at my desk, though, I really feel the lack of sleep effects. Bargoo, I just don't know how you cope. At 6 hours of sleep I'm unable to think critically and just get plain cranky. I admit jealousy of some of my friends who don't get enough sleep but seem to function just fine.
What a timely subject. I've been tired this week. I had some extra hours from working late Monday, so I took off early yesterday. I took a great nap. Went to my book club meeting, then BF asked me to come meet him and his family (who I've been avoiding). So I didn't get to bed until almost midnight, and am tired again today. Sigh.
Yes, I also fall into the "entitled" trap if a splurge meal doesn't hit the spot.
Sheila, I haven't grown kale in containers but I bet it would do well as long as you gave it some good compost.
Allison, you can always get up early in the meal to "go to the restroom" and slip your server your credit card if you go out to eat with your inlaws.
