Well how do you like that? I just had a project tossed at me by a manager in another dept. Her email basically said: "I'm going away on vacation tomorrow. I can't finish this project, so you need to do this for me -- and also have it ready for my meeting on Monday, since I'm also gone next Tuesday & Wednesday."

(I'll bet she's going to Block Island. Everyone in the Connecticut office seems to head to Block Island on summer weekends.)

Shannon, I do like the Fage recipe, now that I've read it, but no, mine differs in that I heat up the curry briefly in a bit of olive oil first -- which cuts the "raw" flavor of the spice. Also, I add raisins or currants & some chopped dry-roasted unsalted cashews & also some sliced scallions. Yeah, all the calorie-added stuff that's fun to taste & chew. My chicken salad is meant to be a substantial entree. Also it's good with shrimp or fake crab rather than chicken.

Jessica, you know, until recently, I did not know what a tomatillo looked like. I recently walked over to one in a market here just to have a better look at it, having seen recipes for the thing but never having seen one. (But who knows, I may have consumed one at some point.) As a Northeasterner, I've had limited exposure to Mexican cuisine. Our little corner bistros & trattorias tend to feature new French or Italian or Asian fusion cooking, rather than Latino foods. From my trips to California, I know it's different out there & probably in other southwestern states too.

Michele, it sounds like Dewey could stand to join the five-to-10-pound thread.

Thanks for asking, Michele. His name is Mahler. It seems apropos for a music major to chose the name of a composer. I was trying to get her to go with Grigio (Italian for gray) and call him Gio for short. Also, Mahler sounds like mauler which feisty kittens are apt to be!

Saef~is it even fair that you are required to do the work? When I worked for a corporation, we were required to finish our work before the vacation if the deadline was that close. Otherwise we either had to take it with us or cancel the vacation. I'd be massively peeved at this.

More dog stuff . . . sweet Javi picked a fight today. Tried to steal a toy from another "stranger" dog, who objected, and Javi just leapt at him with his teeth bared. I got right in there, threw Javi to the ground, flipped him on his back (amazing what you can do when p*ssed off - he weighs 75 lbs.) and kneed his neck. He was so startled that he peed all over his belly.

And my clients claim he isn't upset at all with having to share his space with a new puppy.

michele :sumo: Dewey! I would switch him entirely over to adult dog food now, 1/4 cup at a time. Otherwise he could develop skeletal problems from all this rapid growth. I have heard of this with other puppies - they had such nutrient-rich puppy food that they grew waaay too fast.

Dh is now going to his sister's house tomorrow to build her temporary wheelchair ramp. They just finalized everything tonite. I am much more of an advance planner. I did figure this was going to happen so I planned to do stuff this weekend without him. I will eat a lot of salad, BBQ and other healthy stuff while he's gone.

Just started the process of ordering slipcovers for my Laffie. From Arizona. His current upholstery, aside from being predominantly black, is so slick that none of the dog towels are staying up on it. I constantly am adjusting the towels.

Doesn't help that Hap threw herself all over the two front seats while sopping wet. She had just done a "shake 'n bake" - sand and dirt - and I had to lead her out to swim to clean her off. She is so smart she immediately got that she had to swim a bit beside the pier while I walked on it, guiding her with the leash. I couldn't get mad at the wet towels though - she then lay right down and put her head on my lap very gently. She is sooo totally playing me and I'm letting her do it.

I was MIA yesterday because of work - sorry I'm not caught up.

I'm not a parent, but ever since my sister had her sons I find I identify more and more with stories like this. My older nephew is 7, and was the same age as the Colorado "balloon boy" when that story happened a couple of years ago. I just kept imagining my nephew up there and it was chilling. I'm doing the same thing now and I need to stop. I'm also thinking of the family grieving and almost certainly playing a terrible game of "What if?" My prayers are with them.

The world is a scary place. In my faith we often say it is "fallen," and no other word seems to fit right now.

Everyday we read about these unthinkeable tragedies. I don't understand how one can kill a young , innocent child. My heart goes out to parents who have to try and overcome their grief. Bad enough to lose a child to illness or accident.

I hadn't heard about Leiby until just now when I googled it from this thread. That is so sad. And so senseless. His family will never recover from it. Terrible.

My six year old stepson asked me a few weeks ago if he could just stay in the car while I ran into Target, and I couldn't even do that with the doors locked and the car running.

And here I've been fussy this morning because of my bad diet this week.

It is a terrible, terrible story. Totally senseless and disturbing.

Shannon~as it is in most places, it is against the law to leave a child or animal unattended in a car here. It's meant to protect a child from heat--not necessarily from horrible human predators. But my friend once left her 12 year old son in the car (at his request) and she left the keys in case he needed to roll the window down, etc. She went into whatever store (I think it was the dry cleaner) and when she came back a woman was on her cell phone--calling it into the police! Seriously! As if a 12 year old couldn't figure out how to get out of the car himself! A bit of an overreaction. I think of this story every time my 16 year old son requests the same! But yeah, I'd have a hard time leaving a 6 year old alone.
