Dagmar, that was exactly the mental picture I was trying to convey I imagine.

So my DD and I have been driving around a bit here...I took her to the University of Utah (my alma mater and one on her short list for grad schools--they're on spring break, though). I took her to an iconic drive-in for a shake (butterfinger shake--yum) and then here and there. So while we're driving around we're noticing these scuba schools. In Utah, hundreds of miles from the coast, and there are scuba schools all over. She's wondering why. I can only imagine that it's the skiers who are here for the winter wondering what they can do in the summer.
So I learned few new things today....My Mom's name is Florence Elaine Johnson Fehr (as I knew) and now I understand it is actually Florence Elaine Edla Johnson Fehr (Had no idea of the Edla and I'm 48 years old!). And then to find out my Dads ancestors dropped the Von Der part of Von Der Fehr because he was a ditch digger from Norway and the others made fun of him because he was a "prince" due to the Von Der part of his name. I always thought they'd dropped it an Ellis Island--he came in through San Francisco-- I never knew. I do know that somewhere deep in history I'm related to Mary Queen of Scotts, but how I do not know |
Allison sounds like you might find out some interesting details of your ancestory from whatever that service is that keeps advertising on TV.

Sunday update. Mom passed away yesterday afternoon around 4 PM. She had not been lucid in at least two days but she didn't appear to be in any pain. She simply quit breathing (and frankly, we didn't even notice at first). I'm flying home this morning as planned and DH and I will fly back in two weeks for her memorial service. She requested cremation and to have her ashes flown back to Chicago to be laid in the family plot with her parents. It was sad, but she was ready to go. She is at peace.

Hugs and blessings, Allison.
