I am going to bring you a cupcake!!

I have a co-worker who has also been on a weight loss journey. She just entered maintenance and so this morning I shared my good news with her that I made my goal this morning.

Her response....I am going to bring you a cupcake!!! WTH???? That's sabotage! I always felt that she was a bit jealous of me, as if she wanted to be the only one succeeding at weight loss. She is always trying to eat healthy and then bakes cupcakes for the entire office. She always gets upset with me when I don't eat any but I don't really care.

I am going to bring you a cupcake!! Of all the things to say!!! :?:

This is what can be so maddening... The population at large thinks that crappy food is a reward. (Not all cupcakes are crappy, but most have too much sugar and fat.) And also, that once you reach a goal weight, you are "done" and can go back to eating that way.

Yeah, it does sound sort of sabotage-y. But give her the benefit of the doubt. Tell her that you don't want a cupcake, but you'll return the favor when she reaches her goal... ;)

Or say, "that's so thoughtful - I'll find someone who would really enjoy it for a holiday treat!" And someone definitely would!

Lol...i wish I was as tactful as you guys are. I told her upfront "That's sabotage"! She didn't reply...lol.

Congrats on making your goal.

I can understand from experience about wanting sugar as a reward (maybe your friend follows a different kind of diet, and allows cheat days as rewards?) I'm bad with sugar, so if I ever reached my goal, I would probably run for the hills at the mention of a cupcake. lol. It would definitely sabotage me.

After he realized how slim I was getting, one of my male co-workers replied, "Now you can eat all the doughnuts you want." ???

Congrats on making your goal weight =)

Try not to take it personally. Many people do see food as a reward. Also, a LOT of people think that once you reach goal, you are "off the diet" and can eat whatever you want.

I have had to remind people close to me, including myself, of this truth.

I'm afraid my hubby seems to think along the same lines...
He seems to think that now I'm almost ready for maintenance that I can go back to eating like I used to. Actually seemed totally shocked when I got upset the other week and told him that this is the way I'll be living for the rest of my life, just with maybe a slightly higher calorie intake and slightly less exercise.
Right now maintenance terrifies me, the same way I'm terrified of how I'm going to get through Christmas and the New Year without piling on the pounds....

You know, I have a girl at work who occasionally brings goodies. I realized that she does it because she wants them but she doesn't want them all in the house so that she eats them all. So she makes them and shares them so she's not tempted. She's a tiny thing, who I suspect used to have a weight problem but I'm not sure.

However, she would never say what your co-worker said! I agree with the others that she probably thinks "Ok, now you can eat normally again!" Weirdos.
