Michele, loved your teasing about the “girls” if they biopsy more:o. Me, I have loads of loose skin for “girls” now. Heck they fill up a bra. I told my small sister this weekend about how they amuse me because they are so dangly and funny looking. Picture tube sock with a 1.5” rubber ball dangling in the end and think pendulum. :D But they fill up the bra so I’m not going to fix them.

The thigh lift is still in question. I’m thinking there is a language barrier in getting what I’m asking across. Personally saying thigh lift with liposuction is clear to me but I’m going to Mexico…

Oh Dagmar, keep fighting the food hunts and keep the cheerleading going. You can stop this. I know you can and so do you. Fight it!!! My psychiatrist had me purchase a box light for light therapy in the winter. I’ve since upgraded to the blue spectrum light and I swear by it. It’s for SAD. Amazon has them now for 150 – way cheaper than what I paid. Here’s the link. http://www.amazon.com/s/?ie=UTF8&key...sl_7irn73rka_e If you can, stay away from antidepressant because they make most people gain weight and that would be way counter-productive to your frustration of your weight. Like Meg said, exercise is my anti-depressant as well. I was able to go off my bipolar meds (mostly for the depression side) because of four things: 1. Exercise daily, never miss a day 2. The light therapy Oct through May 3. Multivitamin and 4. Regular sleep (going to bed at the same time every day and getting up at the same time, regardless of whether or not its weekend. They four things were prescribed by my psychiatrist and they work WAY better than all the pills she’d prescribed and I ditched.

BTW, my blue light light box makes me glow. :p You all should see the looks of people that come in my office in the mornings. They make me happy as well because apparently I glow a nice purple shade. :D

Shannon, all I can say is  about DSS. My son did that and it was the only thing he felt control over in his life. He was small, off the bottom of the weight chart but perfectly happy. You have to give up the impulse to fight with him to eat. If you don’t participates, the control/fight ends. Plus, he’s not apt to starve himself. See if you can focus on the fun parts of being with him and deliberately ignore this power struggle. Then when he’s not their do a Billy Blanks Tai Bo (spelling???) workout for the pent up frustration.

Pat, isn’t work life fun?? :hug:about the grievance. We have people in our district that spend their days filing grievances. If they spent the majority of the day working, they wouldn’t have a reason to file one.
Marie

Marie, love the tube sock image! Supportive bras work wonders, don't they? Oprah's bra show was very enlightening to me--and uplifting, too. :)

Dagmar, I've heard those light boxes work wonders. I agree with Marie about the exercise, sleep, etc. I know from experience it's hard to just get going when you're depressed and feel like crap, but you just can't give up now.

Shannon, how frustrating. Kids and their pickiness--mine could really get to me when they rejected my hard work. Marie's got some great insight, though. He really won't starve, and if he's tired, well, he can curl up in a corner and take a nap.

Pat, so where are you and your quilting group going to go? You'll be footloose and irresponsible by then! I tried to take a beginning quilting class, but it was cancelled. Not enough people want to learn to quilt on Friday mornings. Learning to quilt is one of my goals for this year.

Megan, congrats on the pants! :carrot:

Today I had my DEXA scan (bone density). After taking Fosamax for 3 or 4 years my bones are . . ta da! Worse than ever. :( Now I have osteoporosis in four of my vertabrae, not just one, and I've lost another .5 inches in height. Every time I lose height, my the BMI calculator says I'm overweight, and I hate being in the overweight category. I'm at a loss as to what to do about my bones so I'm going to schedule an appointment with a wholistic MD--we'll see if eastern medicine can help because western sure hasn't. Plus I've got an endoscopy scheduled for next week because the Fosamax may have caused some erosions.

I'll take a little cheese with my whine--it's full of calcium.

Have a good Friday everyone!

Thanks for the thoughts, gals. TOday's time off is doing wonders, though when I dropped off food for tomorrow's retirement party, my deputy director told me HR wanted to talk to her again.... And yesterday I got a post office notice that I had a certified letter - gave me qualms all night, but it turned out only to be the state returning my birth certificate, etc that I had to file with my retirement applicaiton. WHew.

Sheila- that's rotten about the osteoporosis. Here I've heard that overweight people had stronger bones from carrying so much around. My DH has been on several fairly stong drugs for the osteo caused by his cancer, but finished about 2 years ago when they determined that they had recalified well. Nothing they can do about the multiple compression fractures though - so he's about 6" shorter than when I married him (shorter than me now). I hope you can find something to help you. ANd ick on the endoscopy!! :)

My squashing took all of 10 minutes this morning - including undressing and dressing again! And they nicely had deoderant in the dressing room. :)

Now I'm trying to get some stuff done at home , but at least I'm not at work!

Sheila~my Mom had been on osteoporosis meds for some time and a couple of years ago was hospitalized for a broken leg. During that time she started having a very difficult time swallowing. She said it happened from time to time before the hospitalization but was getting worse. She felt like everything she ate got stuck in her throat and no amount of drinking would help. She went in for an upper GI and OMG I have never seen such horrible lesions! The meds totally messed up her esophagus so she had to take one of those purple pills (Pepcid?) in order to be able to heal that and be able to eat normally. She took it while in the hospital but since being home decided it was too expensive so she quit. I would imagine it would have been quite painful, but she said it just interfered with her swallowing--even small bites. I sure hope you aren't experiencing that! In any case, any erosion can be healed. I guess when the osteo meds say you have to sit up for 30-60 minutes after taking it--they really mean it!

I hope the holistic doctor can help you out.

And sorry for the shrinkage! My Mom was 5'9" and now at age 86 I think she's about 5'5".

Mudpie 01-29-2010 05:48 AM

Pat I don't know why but the idea of having to apply to retire strikes me as quite funny . I guess it's to receive pensions etc.?

Thanks for all the suggestions for getting me out of my slump.

I think part of the problem is that I get too much exercise - I'm walking the dogs from about 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and I do yoga and weights every alternate day - and maybe too much daylight (I'm outside all day).

I'm so tired after all that that I can barely keep my eyes open in front of the TV and that's when I start to eat to try to stay awake. If I go to bed at 8 (when my body wants to in winter) DH is totally mad at me and I also wake up around 2 a.m., ready to go!

I can't really reduce the number of dog walks right now because of economic reasons (DH is studying and only works 2 days per week). So I'm stuck. For now.

This cycle usually happens to me in winter but not so dramatically. I guess being well over 50 and having my body deteriorating (did I mention they're all BIG dogs) doesn't help. I'm really noticing the fatigue this year.

Maybe I'll just hide until winter is over and start again in spring. I still have two pairs of pants that fit :p.

Megan1982 01-29-2010 09:29 AM

Morning all,

TGIF! :coffee: Dress rehearsal went really well last night, and tonight is opening night. I'll be busy this weekend. Three performances, weight training and gyming it Sat AM, laundry and packing b/c immediately after the final matinee Sun I've got to hop in the car and drive 4 hours for a meeting for work that starts Mon. AM (actually I'm missing a few meetings on Sun. as well). Plus I'm supposed to get some compost for the garden Sat PM, but BF's truck is having trouble so I'm not sure I'll be able to use it to pickup the compost. I'll get home late Wednesday, but I'm bringing my (new!) laptop so hopefully will be able to check in here!

Dagmar, can you just go to sleep when you get tired in the evenings?

Sheila, sorry to hear about your bones becoming worse. I hope the wholistic MD is able to give you some useful information.

Marie, I hope you're able to convey your wishes to your clinic. Overcoming that language barrier is very important!

Thanks for the book title rabbit!

Pat, I'm sorry this personnel issue is causing you so much stress. Your quilting group sounds similar to my book club. Sure we talk about the books, but we have a blast hanging out too.

What's everyone else got planned for the weekend?

Shannon in ATL 01-29-2010 10:54 AM

Good morning! Good food day yesterday and got in 6.62 miles at the park. DH ended up working until almost midnight, so I was able to get the run in, get to the grocery store and get home without feeling guilty for not being home. Of course, then I felt guilty for enjoying the time running around. :dizzy:

Rabbit - yes, thanks for the book title, going to look it up.

Marie -I like the idea of not engaging in combat over food with him. I know he feels some loss of control going from house to house so much, so I'm sure it is all about having control of something. I know he won't starve, but I still worry...

Sheila - my grandmother had Gillian-Barre when she was in her mid-30s and had consistent bone loss the rest of her loss, even with meds. She used to fuss about the osteo medicine, too. It is worth looking into holistic medicine - I've seen it do great things for people.

Pat - HR investigations are never quick, are they.

Dagmar - with all that you do during the day it is no wonder that you are worn out in the evenings. Funny to imagine too much exercise and sunshine. :)

Megan - glad your rehearsals went well, hope opening night is smooth, too!

I have no huge plans for the weekend - DSS all weekend, we will probably go visit granny if she is feeling up to it. Planning to get a run in on Saturday afternoon or Sunday depending on the visit.

Good weekend everyone!

Sheila - we'll go down to the Kenai Peninsula, which is several hours south of Anchorage (which is an hour south of here). There are a couple of cute little towns there, and we'll stay in Homer (where TOm BOdett lived, and is called the end of the road as it's on the ocean) and from there take 2 day trips across the bay to tiny little places - Halibut Cove and Seldovia - then retrace our steps ending with a shopping day in Anchorage. :) You should pursue the quilting - it's a favorite pass time of mine, and I expect to do more of it when I'm retired. :)

Yes Shannon, HR investigations are the worst. And now I have an employee making allegations against another employee in the investigation - completely outside of what the grievance covered. It's soooo bad, I just can't believe it, and the charges by the 2nd employee were also unfounded. Why can't people behave like grown-ups?? At this point I'd retire next week if I didn't care so much what happens to the library and the staff..... As it is I'm glad the weekend is here.

I'm helping the pastor of our church interview an applicant for church admin asst. tomorrow morning. Her resume is excellent, and she's married to one of our members who left the church several years ago when he was involved in a divorce. He's since remarried this woman and come back to the church. However, the woman is Brazilian and we're unsure about her English. She was doing the kind of work we want (though in the private sector) and seems very bright. So that will be interesting.

After that my weekend is pretty open. I'll get to the gym at least once, and sigh, I still have laundry, etc. to do at home. :)

Meg 01-30-2010 05:03 AM

Sheila, it's so frustrating to do everything "right" and still have an issue.:hug: Personally, I'd ignore the revised BMI charts because your loss in height hasn't changed anything inside of you. It's just a little more ... compact. It's funny, when I had my knees replaced, I was hoping to end up taller so -- you guessed it! -- I could weigh more. And not have to hem all my pants. Didn't work.

Marie, forgive me but I've lost track. What's the date of your surgery? I'm so excited for you!! :carrot:

Pat, sorry for all the stress.

Happy weekend! It's still bitter cold here but at least we're not getting the snow that the south is. I was really hoping to sleep in this morning but it didn't work out that way. Blah.

I've been on a new recipe kick to get out of my stale rut, so put together a healthy meatloaf yesterday that turned out really well. I used 95% lean ground beef, Fage 0% yogurt, oatmeal and a lot of spices and herbs (and a couple of eggs). It's 195 calories for a big serving and is great winter comfort food. :T

Today I'm going Asian with marinated grilled salmon, a cold soba noodle salad with radishes, and a spinach salad with toasted sesame seeds. Not really comfort food but just something different. Much as I love my oatmeal, sometimes we have to try other foods!

The gym opens at 8 am and I'm meeting a friend there. Weekends are insanely crowded with the resolutioners but if we stay in the weight room and away from machines we'll be OK.

My weekend project is to tackle the basement. Everything ends up in the basement and now it's time to figure out what to do with it. :dizzy:

What's everyone doing this weekend? Is anyone getting the big snow?

Mudpie 01-30-2010 06:26 AM

I'm sad

Another one of "my" dogs was put to sleep yesterday. Too many things wrong to fix, although he was only 10. His owner told me by email, which seems kind of weird but in a way is kinder. Now I have to get through Saturday errands while crying, instead of crying all day at work.

I was supposed to go to a party tonite involving lots of high calorie food, booze, etc. It's kind of a relief to have a really valid excuse to not attend- they are all "dog" people and will sympathize.

Strangely I don't feel like eating. I was going to go see "Up in the Air". Has anyone seen it and is it in any way sad? I don't want to lose it at the movie if I go.

Dagmar

sznn 01-30-2010 11:04 AM

Dagmar - sorry to hear about your dog friend  that's always tough.

I have been AWOL lately - just reading posts on a regular basis.
I joined WW last week - my SIL had success with going to meetings lately, so I decided what the heck.
Today is my first weigh-in and i am hoping for a loss (fingers crossed).
I think it will help to be accountable to someone (even a stranger) on a weekly basis. Keeps me on track.

We are bracing ourselves for the Olympics to start (less than 2 weeks away)
Should prove interesting traffic wise - could be a real gong show.
Tons of parking | stopping restrictions + road closures. Sure glad i don't work in the downtown core anymore.

traveling michele 01-30-2010 12:42 PM

Meg-- those recipes sound delicious! They would certainly get me out of a rut! Yum!

Dagmar-- so sorry to hear you lost another of your doggies. I would guess the owner is having trouble dealing with it him/herself and thought it would be easier to tell you by email. I haven't seen that movie but I want to so I don't know about the sadness or lack thereof.

Sznn-- good luck with WW. I love WW! I lost my weight with them and now work as a receptionist. It is a great program. Let me know if you have any questions I can answer. I just got back from my meeting/ weigh in. I lost 1.6 since I last weighed (2 weeks). I was pleased because I had been up a bit and now I'm back where I like to be.

I will be going to Disney next weekend so I'm hoping to have a pound or two to spare just in case but I know I'll be super busy there. I'll be chaperoning high school choir members and we are leaving the school at 4:30 am Friday morning (UGH!). We'll be in the parks until late Friday and then all day Saturday and then we leave again Sunday morning at 4:30. Doesn't sound like any time for sleep!

My dh has been in Belgium for a week and comes back tonight in time for a Miss America party at our house! My dd is having friends over to watch so I've told her she needs to clean the house. I'm hoping she is motivated to help because I don't have time! I've got to work on the class I'm taking, go to the gym, go shopping, post office, etc., work tomorrow.....

My older dd's mac crashed yesterday. We are new to macs and for some reason we thought they wouldn't crash?? Anyway, she had to completely reboot the computer and lost everything in the process. She is most upset about losing all of her itunes music. We need to check into a backup system for her (and me as well!). She also lost all of her photos (though many are on facebook).

My dh's birthday is this week so we got him a new ipod which dd has loaded with music, and a digital photo frame that I will load with pics today. I think he'll love both gifts!

Happy weekend everyone!

sznn 01-30-2010 03:51 PM

Michelle - thanks, i may have some questions down the road
Just returned from my 1st WI - down 2.7lbs :carrot:
I am happy with that - I was getting a bit discouraged because my home scale doesn't show the same loss ( and it's a WW brand?)
Feeling motivated for week 2!

Woohoo!! That is a fantastic loss!! :carrot::carrot:The WW scales (at the centers) are calibrated (and inspected) so they are very accurate. The one you have at home may not be as accurate. They (WW) recommends not weighing between meetings as you can drive yourself crazy with fluctuations but I know that can be hard to do.
