Superbowl was a complete nonissue for me, hate football and televised sports in general. I did have a great night on Saturday. I went to a fancy spa and had a massage (where you start with a steam, then a foot bath/massage, then a 1 hour massage). Such a nice treat - heavenly. Then I met a friend at a nearby restaurant. I ate 2 pieces of bread out of the bread basket, 1 glass of red wine, some kind of cod with cashews, baby bokchoy. Then we split a heavenly chocolate molten lava cake dessert with coffee/cream. I was barely hungry at all yesterday, heh.

So, I had all my "super bowl" cheating the night before! Back on track today, though.

My dad will be in town this week and I'm sure we'll do something nice for dinner.

Oh, Lily, I just went back a thread and read about your sister (guess I missed a page this weekend). I'm so sorry for her and hope she recovers fully from surgery! Is it her dominant hand? I hope not.

You had also asked about wedding ring resizing. I had mine resized before our wedding as it's a family heirloom. If I'd only known then that I'd actually finally be able to lose weight and keep it off I'd have waited for the resizing. According to the jeweler my ring is too thin to resize more than once so now we have to decide what to do because I'd have to wear it on my thumb to not have it fly off. You've reached your goal and maintained for so long now that I'd think you could definitely go for the resize. My advice: make sure you go to a reputable jeweler and take photos before you go so you know you get your actual diamond back. I took mine to a "mall" jeweler and he wasn't careful at all. He actually cracked one of the small retangular diamonds on my wedding band in two so had to replace that. He did such a bad job with the soldering around the replacement that the new rectangular diamond eventually fell out. Of course I can't prove it's his fault so now I have to replace the diamond and try to figure out the resize issue. Blah!

Superbowl was a non-issue here, too. We watched it on and off, but no extra food. I was even down a meal and ended up having a bowl of turkey soup at 9 pm cause by then I was too hungry to go to sleep.

CinnamonGirl- Can you have the ring re-shaked? I've had my original wedding band resized a few times, and the last time I was told it was worn too thin. They ended up putting on a whole new shank (the part that goes around the back of your finger, and leaving the front completely intact. The jeweler put a thicker shank on it than the ring originally had so I'm sure it will outlast me.

Lily- Any word on your sister?
I don't follow the food pyramid at all- I eat like Meg. We have different goals.

I think I said this in another thread - I am very critical of the food pyramid after reading Marion Nestle's excellent Food Politics. The book describes how lobbyists and the food industry shape the pyramid, in THEIR best interest, not yours.

Beth, it was her dominant hand that was crushed.

I do plan to go ahead and have my ring re-sized. My FIL that passed away last Christmas was a jeweler for many years. His son now has the jewelry store and I'll take it to him. I trust him .

Mel, my niece called about 1PM to let me know she made it through surgery OK and is in recovery room now. . I hope and pray she'll regain full use of this hand. I worry about her all the time and wish she'd get a less dangerous job.

Glory, thanks for the link and the advice on the food pyramid.

Lily, glad to hear your sister made it through surgery ok. I really hope she can regain the use of her hand fully. They can do some amazing things with reconstructive surgeries these days.

I'm not married yet, so no wedding rings, but I did have my engagement ring resized when I hit my goal weight. It was spinning around my finger and had to hold it on with the two fingers next to it! I got engaged when I was about 10lbs over my goal weight and even just 10lbs made a big difference in my finger width. Nowadays it still fits pretty well, but in the winter my fingers shrink compared to summer so it is a teeny bit loose at the moment.

Today at work I managed to resist the marshmallow fudge brownies, the homemade "Hostess" cupcakes, sweets a coworker brought back from India, AND the superbowl celebratory free pizza lunch. Phew! Now I can eat the yogurt I brought with me, finish up what I'm working on, and then hit the gym.

Glory~I agree with the fact that the food lobbyists dictate how the food pyramid is built. It is those with the big bucks that tell us how we should eat--not the right people to tell us to be healthy. I don't think I knew this last year when I started this lifestyle change--but I do now! At that time, all I knew was the pyramid and I thought it was the best choice. Now that I am more informed, I feel better. Although it is sad to see that there are a lot of people who think there is nothing better than the pyramid.

Lily~glad your sister's surgery went well. I had to go back and look at last week's post to see what was going on. That had to have been scary.

About rings~I guess because I didn't have a huge amount to lose, my rings don't need to be resized. But I may do one ring anyway. DH bought it for me for our 10th anniversary when we were in the Virgin Islands. Like paperclippy said, fingers kind of shrink in the cold, but they also swell in the heat! We found the ring and I knew I wanted it the same size as my wedding ring, but I couldn't get my wedding ring off for measurement. So they used a sizing ring and sized the new ring....the ring fit great when we picked it up that afternoon, but the next morning, it was too loose and it's been too loose for 8 years now!!!

The food pyramid is such a strange thing. I'm guessing 95% of the people in this country don't even think about it ever. Where do Cheetos fit after all? Does the ketchup on the Big Mac count as a vegetable?? And if you care enough about to actually think about it, you've probably got enough info already to make an informed opinion.

My opinion (not worth much): I think it doesn't emphasize whole grains or legumes enough, overemphasizes meat and dairy (to the joy of those industries), and really bites it by throwing all fats into one lump when trans fats are basically poison and omega 3s and monounsaturated fats are really good for you (if also highly caloric). Note that the grain serving sizes are pretty small--one sandwich gets you 2 grains out of your 6, which is what they recommend for most women, unless you have the giant bread slices which probably gets you more like 3-4. Actually all the serving sizes are pretty small, meat, veggie and grain, although that is probably typical American portion distortion talking.

I haven't spent enough time with the new pyramids (everybody gets their own now) to have more than a passing acquaintance with it. I was pregnant the first time around when they came out and they weren't doing pregnant women. Then life intervened before I got back there and now, well, pregnant!

CinnamonGirl-Another option (what I did after losing weight, losing my engagement ring in the freezer, and finding it again!) was to buy a very thin plain gold band (my engagement and wedding rings are gold) in a smaller ring size and put it on after the other rings. It creates a 'stacked' look with my three rings and holds the larger ones in place. My engagement and wedding rings are very simple, so it works.

Also, it must have been the weekend for heinous hand injuries. I read Lily's post about her sister's hand Sunday morning. Sunday afternoon and evening we spent with my 7-year-old daughter and a plastic surgeon specializing in hands in the emergency room after she dropped a wagon with another child in it on her fingers and cracked the bones and pulled the nails out (beds and all). Sorry to be gory. I blacked out on the way to the hospital, thank God my DH was home to drive! I'm NOT a faint at the sight of blood kind of gal, but I guess when it's your own child...

Anyway, best emergency room treatment we've EVER had. We were sent to the 'front of the line', the specialist was paged in, and they went to work. They were able to graft some tissue back on at the time, more will be repaired in future visits. I think for now the focus is controlling the risk of infection to the broken (and not-covered-with-skin-or-nail) bones. She is bandaged up and home again. Kids are unbelievably resilient though. I NEVER should have given her the bell to ring when she needs me... I've been running all day!

Lily, your sister's hand was far, far worse, so I know I have a LOT to be grateful for. It is amazing what modern medicine can do, though. The surgeon assured me that they will be able to graft toenail cells into the beds to grow new fingernails for DD.

Oops, the bell is ringing...

Lily-I'll say some prayers for your sister.

Slimlindy-Oh my gosh, that poor baby. I'm glad you were able to get such good care but ouchy, ouch. I tore one nail off once and it hurt soooo bad. I can't imagine a child going through that. They are resilient though. Good thing I guess considering childhood.

Good morning all,

Another dark and cold morning, and the weatherman says snow is on the way. I hope I can get into the office, do what needs doing, and send everyone home before the roads turn nasty. Forecast says 3 to 6 inches; 3 inches isn't bad; 6 could be a trial.

I'm still wheezing and coughing, so no gym for me. I just hate it when I feel like this ... no energy.

Lily and SlimLady, so sorry to hear about the injuries. Isn't it remarkable what can be done today? There was a time when the outcomes would have been so much worse. I wish both patients a full recovery.

Anne, good to see you posting. I hope this means that all that ginger is working

I don't think I've paid any attention to the SuperBowl for years. It's just not part of my consciousness, even this year when one team might be considered "mine" and the quarterback on the other team is a hometown boy. That a football game has become one of the most signficant common denominators of American culture never ceases to befuddle me, but I'm not your average bear and my opinions don't really count.

Oprah's O magazine has a piece on dieting and weight-loss blogs, which opens with a vignette about 3FC and Suzanne and Jennifer. Our own Meg is quoted. I hadn't realized there are so many of us chickies. Made me feel very cool indeed.

And with that, I'm off to face the day. Bundle up everyone!

Good morning ladies,

My BIL called last night to let us know my sister is doing OK. She has been in a lot of pain and having an upset stomach but other than that OK. They had to get pretty agressive with blood pressure med's because she had very high blood pressure in recovery room. Thanks everyone for the support through this difficult time.

SlimLindy, Oh, that sounds so horrible what your little girl had to go through. I hope and pray she has a full recovery. It truly is amazing how resilient kids are when it comes to injuries/illness. The fingernails part sounds so painful. I do remember having nails torn off before and I can still remember how painful it is. I'm glad she is doing OK right now. I know that must have been very traumatic for you as a parent too.

I just realized that yesterday was my 7 months of maintenance mark. Yippee. I walked 2.5 miles last night even though I didn't really want to. But, once I got going, I was fine. Had my music blaring and was swinging my arms and hips. LOL, I'm glad that I can shut my door and keep others from seeing how silly I look when I work out. I can really get my groove going with that music. LOL. I am learning that watching what I eat and exercising is a very SMALL price to pay for being able to keep off over 90 lbs.

Our temps here are supposed to be 60 degrees today. OMG, then we're forecasted another ice storm for this weekend. This has really been a strange winter.

SlimLindy~what a horrible story. I hope your daughter pulls through without any lasting effects. I can only imagine what you must have gone through (and her, too!).

Lily~congrats on your 7 month anniversary! Go out and enjoy the heat while you can! Our town had the highest temp in the country yesterday (85) but it's supposed to cool off again.

I feel quite proud for staying on track yesterday. I came in at 1405 calories! Today I am on track for that or perhaps less.
