Exercise in a pool?

I thought I'd ask if anyone here exercises in a pool. Such as water aerobics, laps, etc. I am going to start a class soon. ( I keep saying that - I guess I should set a date for "soon" lol) AND...worst of all that means I have to wear a bathing suit in a public place! :o I don't even have one right now.
It actually has been recommended to me by my doctor for health/mobility reasons.
The question I have is - having done "water exercise" did any of you notice a difference in your weight loss? My sister-in-law was going faithfully for a couple of months, and didn't notice a difference. (mind you she doesn't have alot to lose)

Funny...in re-reading my post I think more than looking for people who have lost (cuz I KNOW I have to go..) I think I'm looking for a little push to make myself go. I'm so NOT looking forward to it. I sound like a little kid who needs to take their medicene and just wont...lol

Anyone???:?:

Makena - If you want to try it, go for it! It's a great non-stress way to exercise. Even if you don't see the pounds melt away, you will be more fit and healthy. And if it's something you enjoy, you will look forward to it!

I have used water for excercise. I did not notice a change in weight, but I did notice a change in muscle tone and abdominal strength. I think the pool is great. I would get out of the pool feeling great!

Right now I have very little time so I just do the recumbant bike while I study, it does not do much for the abs, but it burns the calories.

As far as the swimsuit goes, I was recently on a cruise and almost left my suit at home because there was no way I would wear it in public.... much to my surprise, there are all sahpes and sizes that are in swimwear, and no one noticed me (Maybe next time when I look great I will turn heads). I am soooo glad I brought it along. (I was at my top weight of 211 at that time). You can do it!!!

Enjoy your aqua classes.

I have not personally worked out in a pool, but the daughter of a friend does it. She says it's the best exercise she's ever done.

On the bathingsuit thing - if you're really shy of the idea just go to the pool for an hour or two & watch the people. You will see all types - believe me I have seen some strange suits & every body type going. But almost everyone is self-conscious - even the staff!

On the workouts - an aquafitness class is a good way to go as it is guided. But the big trick to getting something out of it is your have to put something into it! I don't know how many times I had ladies in my class just bobbing along chatting & thinking they were getting a workout. Take the instructions to heart. If the instructor says focus on your abs - then do so. And remember the more resistance ups the workout - so an open hand is better then slicing your hand through the water. A deep class is more of a core workout than shallow.

Ummm - anything else I can add?... Have fun with it!!! The water really is great to make you feel weightless, relieve stress on joints, lower blood pressure (while in the water) & provide great core workouts.

Water Work outs are great fun. I go twice a week. The people are so great. And all shapes and sizes. I was a bit shy at first. But got over it.(I think) Even lost some of those granny flaps uder the arms LOL.Have not lost that much in weight, but have gone down in inches. And in saying that, I have only been back on programme about 4 weeks. Give it a go you will have fun and meet lots of people, remember they are also there for their health, and to help you.
