I was reading a recipe for apple crisp and it calls for Matzo...this is something I have never heard of. Could someone please tell me what it is?
Thanks a bunch!

It's like a large cracker. It's unleavened bread that people of the Jewish religion eat during Passover. (and throughout the year just because it's good). Look in the ethnic section where you would find Kosher food in your store.

But honestly - I would use a graham cracker!

isn't it also like grain you can buy-like polenta or something. Because don't you cook it up to make matzoh balls?

I'm just speculating-I've never had it.

That's matzo meal. Very bland, but at Passover you can use it in place of flour. Also for making yummy matzo balls for matzo ball soup!

JM - Since DH is Jewish and I'm Catholic, I've "remade" a lot of classic jewish recipes. He thinks I should have my own cooking show called "New Jewish Cooking with Cassi the Catholic" (LOL).

I told him I would start the show with, "You didn't grow up with spices... it's not your fault. I will show you how to make your classic recipe even better!"

Cassi-

You should pitch that show to the food network!

So-how do holidays work with your family? I find that really interesting. I'm Catholic also and I think the Jewish traditions are really beautiful. It's funny how some people think that the faiths are really different-when the origins are the same? You know what i mean?

We celebrate it all. Easter, Passover, Christmas, Hanukkah, Rosh Hashana (starts tomorrow at sundown), Yom Kippur.

DD (14 - from first marriage) made her communion so she is Catholic. DS (2) will be raised Jewish. I look at it as extra study of the old testament (lol).

Another reason - and I don't want to offend anyone or start anything - was that I had a problem bringing my little blond boy into the catholic church with all the priest issues right now. I felt like I would be offering him on a silver platter. (My church had the bishop removed and sent to Ireland in 2002 right after we got married due to abuse he had done in the 70's, which he admitted to).

I will teach him about my faith at home, but his background will be Jewish. If that whole thing hadn't happened, I'm not sure he would be raised that way, but that was the deciding factor for me.

Anyway - I didn't know you were moving forward with the adoption thing. I think that is SO COOL! I'm really excited for you!

You know-I can understand you being protective of your son-but a few bad apples have spoiled it for all the wonderful priests out there.

The reality is that sexual predators are in every profession-where they can hold some authority over children-priests, pastors, rabbis, teachers, coaches, childcare providers, etc. The priests get so much attention because well, quite frankly, besides that fact that they are supposed to be good moral examples-people love to bash the Catholic church.

It's sad really-that these monsters seek out professions where they have easy access and ruin the reputation of every other wonderful professional in the field.

The way the church handled the situations is a whole other story I won't get into . . . .

I know... it's sad and being Catholic all my life, I am feeling a sense of loss. But DS will know the best of both worlds!

Well-it does sound like you've got it covered.

My plan of action (if you can call it that) is to be a part of the next generation of Catholics who read the bible, read other things besides the bible, pray, live the best way I know how and hopefully lead by example. I love the sacredness of the Mass-my week isn't complete without it.

Okay chickies-sorry to hijack the thread with religion talk. I'm all done now

I love the mass thing too. I like that no matter where you go in the world that day, every mass has the same content and readings. I do miss that...

OK... I'm done too!
