What does lemon water do for you?

I've heard some people talking about making sure to have some lemon water..what is it supposed to do for you specifically or is just a preference? Just wondering, thanks!

Apparently it's supposed to be a diuretic or laxative (not much of one though...)

Back in the late 1970's, I was going to Diet Center (anyone remember them...? You were required to weigh in 6 days a week except on Sundays when they were closed... gimme a break I was only 15 at the time...). Anyway, one of the things I remember was that instead of breakfast we were supposed to have a cup of hot water with the juice of 1/2 lemon added (along with a potassium supplement, which was sold by the Diet Center, of course!).

Right now I think it's being peddled as part of the current "detox your way to weight loss" fad that seems to be making a comeback - if there's one thing I've learned about diet fads, it's that after awhile, like a bad penny, they seem to return on the scene. At this point, I'm waiting for the Beverly Hills Diet to make a big comeback and anticipating the questions that are sure to pop up about Papaya Day.

Diuretic

I don't know what LA Weight loss claims, but lemon juice water acts as a mild diuretic.

I am not sure if it helps with weight loss or not but it does make water taste better.

I have been told it was a mild dieuretic too. I was told that when I was pregnant and retaining fluid.

According to The 29 Healthiest Foods on the Planet, lemons and limes have "Limonene, furocoumarins and vitamin C, all of which help prevent cancer. A wedge has 2 calories, 0 fat and 0 fiber. Buy a few of each and squeeze over salads, fish, beans and vegetables for fat free flavor."

I'm not sure how much lemon you have to eat to get the benefits of all that stuff, though.

I think it's recommended in LAWL as a mild diuretic. Lemon in hot tea is about the only way I can take lemon --

My COD told me that the hot lemon water would help with my stomach digesting the protiens. I have a hard time with protiens just sitting like a lump in my tummy and hurting.

When I went to LA this afternoon, I asked about the hot lemon water. You just sqeeze some in the hot water and they say it works like a natural diuretic. I haven't tried it yet but I'm gonna.

Thanks.

deetsmom 10-19-2005 06:09 PM

But isnt water a natural dieuretic...I drink at a MINIMUM, 8 16oz poland spring bottles each day..youd think that'd do it, LOL!!!

Beanie,
Try the flax oil capsules - 2 per day - I don't want to say that they act like a laxative because they're not...they keep you "regular" which will help eliminate your tummy aches.
