  • I love fruit smoothies, and lately have them once a day in lieu of breakfast or lunch. I add flax seed so there's some extra fiber in them.
Instead of coffee in the morning I make a low cal mocha frappe. After dinner I blend up skim milk + sf cocoa + ice.

My weight loss has picked up a little in the last few weeks... could all the blender drinks explain that? I'm just curious if anyone drinks a lot of smoothies too, and if so do you have positive results??
  • I drink a smoothie every day for breakfast, sometimes as a snack in the evening.

When I first read your post I thought you said you were gaining from the smoothies and was going to say that I have to carefully count the calories in mine to make sure I don't go overboard, but you said you were losing faster.

If you are drinking a smothie that is lower cal and better for you than what you would have been eating or snacking on it could absolutely explain the loss. Plus, fiber makes you feel more full.
  • I rarely make them at home because my blender sucks. But Freshens has some rockin' smoothies, even some reduced calorie ones!
  • i love my morning smoothie and get sad when I run out of fruit and money
  • kellygram,
I always wanted to try them..do you have any recipes you can share? They sound perfect for breakfast, I just can't eat that early.
  • Smoothies are my FAVORITE.

I used tomake green smoothies with lots of spinach, frozen fruit, seltzer, OJ and psyllium (or flax).

These days my favorite is vanilla soymilk, small banana, a few frozen strawberries, psyllium husks, and chocolate protein powder. I don't like heavy breakfasts and this gives me a ton of energy and keeps me full (and is YUMMY).
  • I have a smoothie everyday for brealkfast.I use Almond Milk (40 calories).Banana or other fruit as my base.

    Hi Morrobay,

Frozen fruit is awesome for thickening up your smoothies... I find bananas etc on sale then slice up, freeze on cookie sheet then in zip-locs.

  • Morrobay:

Here is one I absolutely love:

    6 oz unsweetened pineapple
    3 tsp. of wheatgerm
1/2 cup of frozen blueberries or raspberries (or a mixture of both)
1 small banana (or 1/2 a large banana)
2 tbsp. of unsweetend, non-fat yogurt (I use Fage Greek yougurt)
1 tsp. of honey or blue agave nectar
    Ice

Blend all the ingredients together until smooth. Each serving has about 250 calories.

    Cheers,

    J
  • I make a smoothie every morning, hadn't thought of adding yogurt but will try it.
  • Mememe!

I used to drink a post-workout protein shake that was just designer whey in a shaker with water and ice and that has gradually evolved to a protein/fiber shake and then into green smoothies that have about 800-900 calories and take me from breakfast through lunch. That may seem weird to some people but it really works for me (and I like to eat the bulk of my calories pre-dinner). The initial investment is high but I buy bulk and each addition came slowly rather than thinking, one morning, "I will go to the health food store and buy 200 dollars of smoothie ingredients."

    Basic recipe:
    1/2 cup unflavored hemp milk
    1 cup water (or more)
    50-100g kale
    50ish-90ishg baby spinach
various fresh fruits when things are in season and cheap and delicious
    (blend)
1 serving designer whey chocolate powder (looking to move to something sans sucralose..)
1 serving designer whey chocolate weight control powder (I feel like a moron buying it but I like the taste better than the standard formula (stevia sweetened)
1/2 serving unflavored vega powder (by sequel naturals)
1 serving manitoba harvest hemp powder (unflavored)
1 serving nature's answer chia seeds
    1 serving ground flaxseeds
serving of frozen fruit (nothing with a syrup or any sweeteners, or anything that is not fruit)
tablespoon or two of raw cacoa powder
    cinnamon
    ginger
    allspice
(blend, add ice or liquid as needed)

I had to add the ginger and allspice when I got the vega because the unflavored one tastes like paper mache paste I'd rather add 10 calories of delicious spices than 20 calories of sugar or "natural flavors". The vega is a really great product though and I love the added goodies. Only place I've ever seen it in stores is Whole Foods.

I have been known to add plain greek yogurt or 1/2c V8 Splash to the blender. And every once in a blue moon things aren't tasting edible and a dash of stevia is called into play.

And added disclaimer that this concoction has about 40g of fiber and you need to work up to that level without digestive upset.
  • green smoothie, yummy?

I have heard of green smoothies but it always sounded gross to me. Now that I'm a smoothie addict I want to give them a try! Love the concept of drinking your veggies. Thanks for the recipe!

Question: Do you use fresh kale & spinach, or frozen?

I LOVE V8 SPLASH... just discovered it and throw it in my morning smoothie.

I use fresh (and organic spinach - kale usually only comes organic in health food stores for a premium) and weigh them on my little digital kitchen food scale (as well as weigh the powders and such, after I figured out that some scoops/serving sizes aren't accurate). However, I don't really see why you couldn't use frozen spinach (never seen frozen kale), which I'm assuming is cheaper. I just never thought about it!

I usually don't drink juice because the calories are mainly from sugar (and no fiber means it will slam into my blood stream) but when I was first experimenting with the vega I NEEDED that sugar like whoa. rofl.

I love pulling out my potions and concocting green smoothies, so much fun and so full of good stuff. Didn't even have to buy a vitamix or blendtec! (But someday...)
  • I love all your reciepes, I love smoothies but I just love also a glass of ice tea or another drink in the blender with ice and crush the ice just seems to cool me off in this Texas steaming hot weather. Have ya ever tried that?
