Turkey Bratwurst?

Is this acceptable as protein?? I had that for dinner last night and they were verrrrry good! Can I eat this on this plan? Gold....:?:

Probably as an infrequent food... I have the chicken, spinach, and cheese sausage at barbeques, but only about 1 time a month...

I have them occassionally as well, but I wouldn't have this more than twice a month. I brought some with me to a Cub Scout Campout and had that instead of a hot dog or a regular braut.

We've done the same thing.. They are awesome, but need to be an infrequent treat..

Most of them are still pretty high in fat, so you have to be really careful not to overindulge simply because they are made of turkey..

Better yet, make your own! Here's a recipe I use for making Italian style patties, but if you have an extruder (don't we all?) you can make links as well...

1 Pound lean (as close to fat free as possible) ground turkey
• 2 tsp Garlic powder
• 1-1/2 tsp Sugar (or 3/4 tsp of Splenda/sugar blend)
• 1 tsp Dried oregano
• 1-1/2 tsp Fennel seed, crushed
• 1/2 tsp Pepper
• 1 tsp Salt (Morton's Lite or NoSalt alternative) - If you use NoSalt, use a little less than a tsp, as it has a VERY strong flavor!

How to make Italian Turkey Sausage:
• Take a bowl and combine the turkey, garlic powder, fennel seed, sugar, salt, oregano and pepper, mix well.
• Cover and place it into the refrigerator for about 8 hours or overnight.
• Shape them into eight patties.
• Cook in a nonstick skillet coated with nonstick cooking spray for 3 minutes on each side or till a meat thermometer reads 165 degrees F.
• Or crumble the turkey into a nonstick skillet coated with nonstick cooking spray and cook for about 4 minutes, till the meat is no longer pink, keep stirring. - Mix these with some scrambled eggs!!!

Remember the leaner the meat you use, the faster it will cook, so use a med high setting to prevent overdoing teh surface of the patties.

Hey, Dan, my DH has all the sausage making tools one can have..........I thought all men had um?

Naw.. That's just one thing I hadn't gotten around to yet.. Thought about getting one of those Ronco sausage makers, but we don't eat sausage enough to justify it.. Maybe for Christmas!

Hi Dan

I just made your recipe and it is delicious, thank you.

Glad to hear it.. I just made up a bunch for our Camping trip.. I may have gone a little lite on the spices accidently, so we'll see how they go this time around..
