How many pounds make a difference?

  • When you began losing weight, how many pounds did you lose before you noticed a difference? I know the bigger we are, the more pounds it takes. But, I'm just curious when you could tell you were losing weight.
  • I usually see it in my face and I can tell by the way my clothes fit when I am losing. I usually drop a size after losing about 15 pounds. Just for what it is worth , I have lost 40 pounds and not one person has noticed, or if they have they have not mentioned it. The only one who has commented was my internist and that was because she was reading my chart. There are many reasons why people may not say anything so don't let it throw you if no one notices.
  • Dee, I am a big girl, and at a total of 30lbs altogether lost this year, people are just now noticing. I went down a size around 20 lbs lost. Also I sometimes wore baggier clothes which makes it hard to see a difference. The only way I can tell a difference other than my clothes fitting better is to look at pictures from last year and I can really see a huge difference in my face.
  • Dee, I felt a difference after about 7 pounds. Other people (besides my mom and husband) noticed at closer to 30 pounds. I think when you buy new clothes, it is when other people who see you regularly notice. It is funny once you get to the point where people notice, the next few pounds they notice a LOT. Not sure why that is. Perhaps because the last few pounds came off so slow that I shrank a lot but did not lose a lot at that point in time. I do think people notice your shrinking and don't know that the scale says, and sometimes the scale is moving but you are not shrinking as much and other times you are shrinking like crazy and the scale hardly budges. At first I think the scale moved a lot but I didn't shrink so much. So anyway, keep track of your measurements too, as at times that will be super motivating.
  • I started noticing after about 10 pounds my clothes were looser. People have been noticing alot lately. I lost 22 pounds up to now and I am down 2 sizes in my shirts and pants.
  • Mine was almost like what Barb said - 10 pounds for me to start noticing, and others at 30 pounds, then even more so now at 48-50 pounds. I think that's when I finally decided to start wearing a size smaller, then another size smaller... LOL Thank goodness for all those pants I kept for years and years in my closet!
  • yep, I agree........right around 20-30 pounds if you have 70 to lose. It can be discouraging.........but stay strong, you are about 1/4 of the way to noticable already.

Also......we have had discussions about this before on this forum, and sometimes people notice, but are unsure of how to address it. Many people are afraid that commenting might be insulting. So, I am going to suggest to you to take a photo of yourself right this minute......and then take one each month.....and post it here for us......cuz we are NOT shy, and we will tell you what we see
    XOXO
  • All together I'm 3 sizes down, and only lost 12 pounds. I know I'm no where near typical.

The only thing that makes me notice that I even lost anything was the fact that my size 14s got replaced with size 8s. When I need a reminder, I put on the pants I wore for my first weigh-in, that's when I really notice the difference. When I see how much extra fabric there is, that cements the difference in size.
  • I think it depends on the person. I have lost 24lbs and I still wear the same size. They do fit looser but same size. My husband noticed after the first few lbs. I still don't notice any difference.
  • I've lost 43 and people at work are just now starting to notice. I haven't bought any new clothes yet because I was wearing tight stretchy clothes when I started and now I'm just wearing LOOSE stretchy clothes. I have been able to wear a few things lately that aren't stretchy, but are the same size. I still have so much to lose that I haven't really made a dent yet, but I know I'll get there!
  • Let's see...I'm at 59 lbs. so far and I haven't noticed too much physically. I have noticed that my face looks thinner and my clothes look like tents. But when I have on clothes that actually fit, I don't feel any thinner. And it's funny. "They" say you go down a size about every 10-15 lbs. I've lost 60 basically and have gone down 2 pant sizes and 1 shirt size. I think that's part of the reason that I'm not as excited as my COD seems to be about my loss. If I've lost 60 lbs., why haven't I gone down more sizes? Oh well. I'll get there when I get there.

I do understand, I am down 26lbs and wear the same size. They are loser but that is about it. I can now pull the pants down without unbuttoning them. lol Found out yesterday my BMI went down from 40.1 on 5/9/07 to 35.1 on 10/9/07 oh well maybe the next 5 I will notice.
  • For obvious reasons, I'm not a big mirror fan, so for me to notice I've lost weight is just catching my reflection one day and having a "Whoa!" moment. I only notice the definition in my legs first, then how my clothes feel. I think that's around 15 pounds lost. Some people notice at that point, but most notice around 25 or 30.

That is exactly how I am too, down about 22-23 pounds but have gone from a size 15/16 to 7/8.
